Keeping different breeds in the same enclosure

Okay, here's taboo for ya. I'm getting a BCI and I need a place to put him. In his own tank is my choice but I'm getting the snake three days before I get the cage. I'm getting a 55 gallon for $30 but I have to wait. If I seperate my ball and BCI with a divider can I put them in the same enclosure? They are both about the same size. (About a year old) I hate to do it, but necessity dictates....well, ya know. My concern is health issues, not whether they'll get along.:colbert:

No two snakes should ever be in the same enclosure unless for breeding in my book.

You should also follow a separate room quarantine for 3-6 months to avoid diseases traveling to your other snake.

If your not ready for the animal, you should wait for the animal.

A year old BCI is not the same size as a year old ball python..

Not to mention boas can carry IBD which is fatal if contracted by a ball python.

Two words...IBD, and quarantine. Well ok four words. I wouldn't keep a BCI in the same HOUSE as my collection.

Quarentine first.
If you need a seperate enclosure temporaily, get a plastic bin from Walmart, it'll cost you $5. With a little bit of time, you can have it coverted to a temp housing option.
Check the stickys here for how to set up a tub, and follow that. Then you have a enclosure for super cheap, to use until your tank comes.

why not many here do. i have a BCI and a python.


chances of a boa that has been purchased from a good breeder having IBD is less then you getting hit by a bus on your way outside today.

all boas don't have IBD. thats the kind of paranoia thats unfounded. yes there is a possibility that its a carrier but the breeder would see adverse symptoms in at minimum one of there hundreds of snakes im sure.

No offense, but that's as bit harsh to boa keepers. Yes, there is a possibility, but that doesn't mean they have to be shunned. Ball pythons can come in with that disease just as much as a BCI could.

Ball pythons tend to die within a month or so once they've contracted IBD. Boas can carry it, and infect other boas, without symptoms for a long time.
It's a little paranoid to say NO boas in the house at all. But I say the same thing, just because there is the possibility of it. And you don't know that the boa is coming from a large reputable breeder. If not, it could have picked up anything. That's why strict quantine is ALWAYS necasary.

No offense intended to the boa owners out there. I love them. Is that a bus I hear?

If you cannot ensure proper quarantine, then you DO NOT get the animal.

You should have your new enclosure up and running for at least 48 hours before moving an animal into it.

Any new animal should be in a separate room, not just a separate enclosure.

It does not sound like you are ready to be taking on a second animal. You need to provide for them, be prepared, know the risks, and take the correct precautions.

That is part of a being a responsible keeper.
