What do you use for an all-purpose cleaner for your tanks? I need to clean our 20 gallon for our new baby (it had rats in it) so we can move it over soon.

I use Chlorhexidine solution or listerine. I worked at columbus serum company and was able to get gallons of chlorhexdine for about 5 dollars for a case of gallons. But sadly webster veterinary and patterson dental bought us out and shut us down last month so now I get it from our local feed and seed store

I clean everything (snakes and rodents) with dish soap and hot water first, then 10% bleach solution, then rinse.

I use that for most of my cleaning to but when I really want to zap something good I use "simple green d PRO 3" you can get it at Home Depot and it kills, viruses, bacteria, molds and is great at removing odors. make sure you rinse it real good cause it is strong

White Vinegar. It disinfects just as well as bleach and is nontoxic as well as cheap. Before someone pipes in with some comment about the smell I'll preemptively ask this, do you like the smell of bleach? If your great grand mother didn't use it then it probably isn't safe.

Re: What do you use to clean?
I would argue that bleach is much better at killing microbes than vinegar....My great grandmother died of an infection that could have been prevented with modern disinfectants.

If you're only cleaning, why waste the expensive stuff like chlorhex? Dish soap works great, and soap and water gets rid of 99% of bacteria. If you want to disinfect, follow up with a disinfectant, but be sure to pay attention to contact time. Chlorhex won't do anything for disinfection if you don't let it contact the surface to be disinfected for 10 minutes.

I soap and water the take all up, then rinse it out and use Chlorhexidine...
I also leave the snakes "ornaments/furniture" as it was before so the snake couldn't possibly go into shock from too much cleanliness?

    Anyways, thats what I use.

Chlorhexadine. Vinegar with water also works.
