Stupid pet store!!

I Have three snakes now so I figured I'd start a small colony. I went to the pet store to get two large male and female rats. I get home and check and they are both females. How hard is it to sex rats if your a pets store owner?

Keep them any way. If something happens with one female, you always have another.

Thats what I was thinking but i still lack the much needed male.

If they're of breeding size and were in with a male, the deed is most likely already done.

Of course further deed doing would require the acquisition of a breeder male, but as of now, you may well be expecting.

Go get a pet friendly rat as they will let you hold him and check the sex. If I get feeders they won't let me go in the room to look them over. I had a feeder rat and he was a biter so bad I ended up killing him. has sex issues with mice though.

I had a similar thi happen JUST yesterday.
I asked the guy for a male mouse (I have a very picky BP) and he goes, "Uh.. I can get you a mouse, but I can't guarantee it'll be a male." I asked why (I always get male mice on request) and he said because he didn't know the difference... :no:
By the way, these are adult mice...so it REALLY shouldn't be too hard....
Needless to say, I rolled up my sleeves and got my mouse.

Hahaha I think that she knew I wanted to breed them because she asked me why I needed a male and a female. I told her I had picky snakes and she said that she had never heard of that. Then my girlfriend went and told her that the first snake I got from her (rookie mistake) was in fact a male. She asked how we knew and my girlfriend told her that i popped him. Then she started telling me I shouldn't pop adults because of "their muscle structure." I then told her I learned how to do it from pros who pop their adults all the time, and she said that was stupid. I couldn't believe she thought she was the expert her snakes aren't even taken care of right. I was upset.

Ugggg I hate it when people try to push their uneducation opinions on you!!

I know! It makes me crazy.

I know the feeling the local pet store guy in a bind and wants al lthe rats I can get him cause htey place he usely gets them is more less between littlers plfows and fell behind on orders. I laught and told him I was feeding live rodents because they were breeding too fast.

I went to the local pet store here the other day. Asked for 2 females and 1 male. lady looked at me and was like "they're feeders...what you get is what I give you."

...

I got my 1.2 mice.

At least you didnt get 2 males. Now you can do a 1.2 breeding setup.

sexing rats is easy work.

Females spacing from the anus to the urethra is very close together as the males are farther apart to give space for the jingle bells

I agree. I have had no problems sexing my rats once weaned off the moms. As far as the pet store rats, my local Petco only sells females. They said they do not carry males. I found a local breeder and picked up two nice boys who have become my studs so to speak. They have not let me down yet and have produced litters of 8-12 pups with the females I bred them to.

I can sex them as soon as they start getting hair. I don't know how on earth she couldn't tell the difference in adults!!!! One has big nasty "things" dragging behind them and the other doesn't :D

I went to the Pet Store to pic up two large females a little while back. It was the 3rd time I'd been there that month and the same girl gave me the rats each time. I think she knew they were for breeding/feeding. I got to the check out counter and a lady was behind me and asked what I had in the box as she started grabbing it and trying to look. In the past I had an experience at the pet store when my dad was buying rats for feeding and a store worker asked what they were for and he said, "To feed a snake." And they got all pissed. So I learned from that and when she asked I just said they were for my cousin. I don't have a cousin within 500 miles of me. Haha... Pet store Suckers.
