Help!!!! Questions on breeding
I am getting ready to start breeding ball pythons and i have some questions
1.what rack system and incubators should i use? could i build my own for cheaper?
2. i want to start off with lesser platinums. Where could i buy an adult Lesser Platinum male and for how much?
3. where could i buy some normal adult females and for how much?
This is something i have been contemplating on doing for a long time now i got my first ball and fell in love. i would really appreciate any help i can get

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
Also are there any morphs you suggest working with?

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
:welcome: My suggestion is successfully owning/raising for at least a year or so before attempting breeding. And seeing as you don't even own any, what experience do you have with snakes? Please read thru the husbandry forums, you will find tons of answers, to questions you didn't think to ask :)

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
1.) keep a BP or 3 for a year or two.
2.) Read every day on this site during this time.
3.) save up lots of money
4.) loose hope of making any money as a result of breeding.
5.) start thinking about breeding.
follow in this order!

cant say i disagree with you but the op never said that he hasnt done all 5 of those. unless im missing something, but from what ive seen we have no way to know how long he has kept bps, what he has thought about, or how he knows about them.

1. AP racks, RBI, Vision, all these are good, inexpensive (compared to others). You will need a CB70 sized rack for breeding. I would not try to build my own until you are more familiar with their needs. You can build your own bator, fridge, cooler, check the DIY on this site.
2. RDR, 8ball, NERD, all these guys have nice lessers. I got a hatchling from 8ball. Babies are running 6-700. Adults would be out of sight.
3. I would suggest staying away from pet stores. Buy from breeders, reptile shows are a good place to get adult females. Probally looking 2-250 each.
4. Everyone else is right, don't just jump into this thing. I bought my first bp in 05 and this is my first year breeding. I have spent over $25,000 so far and haven't produced a snake yet!!!

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
I just recently started to gather snakes for breeding projects also. I am a few grand in the hole and dont see a way out! But they are awesome to own and do not for a second regret the money I have invested in them.

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
I also have invested over $20,000.00 and only started in Sept. 08. I now have 72 balls, so I would say I have a addiction to balls. I am happy with most of my purchases but I did have some sick ones come in. You have to watch what you get online.

Re: Help!!!! Questions on breeding
I got my first ball on feb 6 09 and I have already put over $2,000 into my hobby. And I dont regret spending one penny of t. I just recently started gathering bp's for breeding. But they are all under 9 months old. That way I can raise them until they are ready to breed and meanwhile learn everything I can. And I would suggest getting 1.1 normal and start off with them. You dont want to mess up with expensive morph's. You'll be unbelievable bummed if you lose a clutch do to poor research and knowledge on the subject.

Hello there. You have one ball python correct?
Is it a male or female? Has it ever gone of feed? How did you find out the sex? Where did you purchase it? What are you keeping him in?
It takes 4-5 months of research and reading to know how to just take care of multiple ball pythons on a daily basis and work around issues like illness, feeding issues, and stress problems.
It can take 1-3 years of research to even slightly learn enough about breeding to plunge in and try it. You also can not do it for the money, as you will probably not make any profit off of breeding these animals unless you get into the thousands and have a full time breeding facility.
You will have a lot of trouble finding large adult females, and they could be very expensive. Do not buy Gravid wild caught females, they are often very pest infested and it's just not a good idea. A good idea would be to wait for the 09 hatchlings to show up (there will be a lot!) and purchase the morphs at their less expensive base price and raise them up for 2 years. Then breeding will be a wonderful thought.
I've been keeping snakes 5 years, and balls for a little over a year. I am HARDLY even close to being ready to breed ball pythons. I can't even breed corn snakes.
Good luck.
Also, if you buy any new animals, you should have a 6 month quarantine or so to make sure they don't have any bad diseases or parasites. They should be in a separate room from your collection and not come into contact at all.
Vet visits would not be a bad idea either.
