Good deal or rip off?

Hi all I just found a girl who will sell me a 1:3 ASF for $50 she said they are higher price cause they are het albino . I don't know what het albino means so I would appreciate some help here.

Well I don't know what they go for in your area. Around here I usually pay anywhere from $3.00 to $5.00 per rat. They are young but close to breeding age (not recently weaned).

Around here, I get about 40-50 ASF for $50 bucks. Albino ASF's don't taste any different to my snakes as the normal ones do!
But if its either $50 for 4 or get none, I'd get the 1.3...

If you don't like the price, then find another source. If it's just for breeders to breed feeders for your snakes, then you don't care whether they carry albino genes or not.
If no one in that area has ASFs then that might be a great price, if there is a lot of suppliers, then it's high. But I still wouldn't call it a "rip-off". It's her rats, and if she wants to put a $100 price per rat, it's her call.
I'd check around and see if someone else might have live ASF nearby cheaper.

Ahhh, missed this thread...

There are no known albino ASF' strains in the US that I personally know feeder breeders are working with. They likely meant het for PED. (pink eyed dilute) They come out a lovely fawn / yellow color with pink/ruby colored eyes.

To me, I don't see how the hets for anything would cost more, I really doubt she has ANY normals that are not het. It's very hard to keep track of things like that and purposley breed a certain gene out on purpose, especially a recessive one, if you catch my drift. It sounds like a marketing scheme that really doesn't matter. If you can, ask her for just normals. I bet ya you'd get the fawns (PED) and cinnamons anyways.

Depending on where you are, I would see if anyone else around would have a better price. Like Mike Cavanaugh lives down there don't he? Competition in the market is a good thing!!!!!

$50 for 4 ASF's? what part of Florida are you in?! They are worth every penny if that is the only thing around... but there are probably other sources in your area....

I am in between Pensacola and Talahassee.
I had a guy that was about 40 miles from me that I was going to get all my rats from . When I first talked him to ask him what he had and what I could get from him he said no problem just let him know.
But now that I am ready for them he said he could only give me 1 male and 1 female ASF instead of 1:3 or 1:4. And has gone back on the amount of regulars too.
So I started looking else where.
The girl I found with the $50 price in 2 hours away but very do able.
Anyway just wanted to reply back to you.

Supply and demand. But that sounds high since others on forum have ASF's that live near or as close to you. I have a "pet" store near me who re-sales mine for $30.00 as trio's or $12.99 each. I posted some pics of my PED last week, see if that's what you saw.

im picking up a trio about an hour from me next week for 10 bucks... i sure as hell wouldnt pay $50.

I paid 3 bucks a piece for mine. Too bad you dont live close to me i would give you a breeding quad for free. I have 2 groups going and they are awesome breeders.

I couldnt aford that I get all my asf for 2 dollars a piece.

Why dont you just get regular rats or mice?

The ones I got are doing great. I have my first litter. And I didn't listen. I waited and didn't separate them in time, the one male got chewed up. He'llbe okay, but I should have listened.

YEAH I STOPPED BREEDING SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH TO LAST FOR A YEAR NICE BIG ASF'S ABOUT 300 OF THEM ! lol NOT SELLING ANYMORE.

Mine I usually sell for a dollar a piece no matter what is wanted.

I breed them locally and sell them for $1-$1.25 for adults. That includes albinos, Gremlins, Pieds, Normals. They're all the same when it comes to my snakes. $50? That's insane!!!
