Pieds????

Im having trouble deciding wheter or not to go woth a pied to pied breeding or spend a little less and go with a pied to pied breeding??? Pieds are one of my favorites and I have to get one lol

think you might have made a typo there.

but id go with 100 %het to 100% het not perfect odds but youll most likely get one first try

I am currrnetly workngi on het to het but I will go to piedto het at least this way you can sell ( if that your thing) the normals as 100%hetand not have the chance of a normal gonig out .

once I get my pied ( fromt my het ot het ) any other I don't keep wit be sold ( offered out to adoption ) as normals. I know it mayhurt a profit type set up but i figure it may offer any future breeder a nice surprise if they breed a het to it by chance and figurethey take the longest way out lol..

Pied to het is 50% chance per egg.
Het to het is 25% per egg
Pied to pied 100%

Lots of breeders bring up female hets and drop the $ on a pied male.

from a financial perspective, dump the big $ on a pied male and pick up a het female or two. Typical breeding scenario for any animal is to get true quality males and then breed to multiple females for quantity. Multiple females also reduces the chances of having a non-productive season due to bad odds(not hitting the homozygous forms) or having one bad clutch ruin your entire season. You could probably get two het females for the price of one hom. female

From a collectors perspective, why not have TWO visual pieds in the collection, instead of just one?

I agree. Most likely if you buy a pied male, a breeder would give you a deal on some 100% het pied females.

Pied male to alot of het females if you can afford it. All of the babies will be at least 100% hets and you have better odds of getting a clutch in the first place.
Plus if you have some normal breeder females you can start producing hets and making some money back in your first season.

if money was no object buy a lightning pied and start making double hets!

I would buy a het female, and then try to find a stud pied male to breed with. That way you end up with pieds and hets.
Then the first pied you ever own will be the one YOU made!

That is the cheapest fast way to produce pieds and 100% hets. You do lose part of your clutch depending on your agreement with the pied owner, but a breeding loan would be sweet!

Oh so even if you breed a pied to a het pied its not guaranteed youll even get a pied its just a 50/50 shot right?

That's Correct.
50% chance of a pied.
50% chance of het pied.

Good odds, in my opinion.

If I could have afforded it back when I got my pair of hets, I would have gone with pied to het pied instead of het pied to het pied. You'll produce a pied either way eventually, but you also have to think about what you're going to do with the other babies. And 100% het pieds are MUCH easier to find homes for then 66% het pieds.

Yea I know one way or the other I will have at least one pied. Im not really looking to breed a het to het

Personally I bought 4 %50 het pied 08 females, since possible hets are so much cheaper and I figure with 4 there's gotta be atleast one het pied... And I am saving up for a visual pied male born in 09 'cus the price will probably drop and this way they will hopefully age/size out the same year.

I'm scared though that none of my possibles will prove out :O

3 of them are sisters from a clutch of 6 and one person bought the other 3, so if she got ALL the hets and I got all the normals then :mad::mad:

So maybe %100 hets are the way to go.... I'm pretty happy with my decision. Even if they're all normals they still all have crazy awesome patterns. And they'll still produce hets when bred to a visual so I can sell the babies either way... Maybe not sell for much $$ but atleast I probably won't get stuck with alot of mouths to feed.
