    Herp Debt
Earlier in the week Lady Ohh came out of the closet regarding herp-envy, which some of us have.

This begs the question...how many of you are in debt over buying herps?

What I mean is, credit cards, etc.

I have to admit, I carry a bit of that debt related to herps myself.

I only use the extra money I have to buy my snakes. That's why I only bought one snake since I was laid off, and that was with a little of the money I got from selling my BEL paradox. I try to never use a credit card for anything that isn't an emergency. I wish I could teach my girlfriend to do the same. She doesn't believe me when I tell her that buying something with a credit card is not the same as getting it for free, but she gets shocked and angry every time she adds up her debt.

I am contemplating putting a sulfur on a payment plan or credit card. That's sort of an emergency.

No real dept here to date. Altho My first purchase, encluding enclosure and all other needed items, almost ended up in debt. As I had bills to pay which were late for that month. :colbert:
The real factor in keeping me Herp Debt free is the limited space I have.
Altho if it were to happen, it may be the Geckos that bring it on. Given their somewhat smaller size, I can squeeze them into smaller spaces.

I probably put something for my girl on a credit card at one point but I never carry a balance on it. My rule for things besides a mortgage or a car is that if you don't have the funds to buy something at that moment in your bank account and it isn't an emergency, then don't buy it.

None here. I don't buy it unless I have the money (in cash or bank) for the animal, veterinarian check up, food and full set up.

I'm afraid it's the only thing that has me limited on the number of animals I have. :D

None. The only credit card I have is a business travel card from my company. I buy what I can, when I can. Now if you were to ask what % of my monthly income goes to Ball Pythons and their stuff...that would be a very different strory.

Suffice it to say, I have actually had conversations in my head about how I really need one more RBI rack, and eating 4 for a dollar mac&cheese for two weeks really isn't all that bad.

LOL, I love it The mac&cheese ball python diet. Sounds like a book about how to buy BP morphs and accesories on a budget.:gj:

There should have been a $0 option. I try to pay for them out of pocket, or it would get out of hand. I've learned my lesson about debt in the past (wasn't even snake related) and I'm not doing it again. Now I do sometimes do payment plans, but I've only once received an animal that wasn't paid in full, however it was with a breeder that I had dealt with several times before.

Yep you needed an option for those of us that aren't comfie with carrying "snake debt". I've done payment plans before and I just hope to not do too many of them again. With the economy the way it is, trying to plan ahead for me is just too difficult and I hate leaving a breeder hanging waiting for money. For now it's either cash up front or trade deals (which I love). That's getting a really nice selection of new snakes into the collection and placing some of our hatchlings in collections of good friends. :)

no debt here, at least snake related. I have a mojave on payment plan but he's almost finished being paid off. I second the need to win lotto and have a dedicated herp area dream.. I have that one nearly every night :p its good to dream.

No debt, but they're a substantial ongoing expense in terms of money and time, which as a hobby I don't really expect to recoup. The lack of debt is mainly due to the fact that I have a side business that pays to maintain my herp addiction.

no money = no new animals
you could get carried away with this hobby.
I know of a few folks who go all out - get into trouble with debt and end up selling animals (and their enclosures) off - much cheaper than they purchased them for -

Should have a none option up there. I would never buy animals on credit cards or loans, just not my style if you can't afford it don't buy it it's a rule I like to apply for myself. Not saying anything is wrong charging a Piebald or Bumblebee on a card but I would never do it.

I'm also going to have to say "none" unless you count the fact that I'm in the middle of a payment plan. I don't really consider that debt. More like layaway.

Of course I don't own a credit card. If I did my answer might be different.

Once upon a time there was a guy who went to his banker and took out a second mortgage on his home to buy a $15000 Spider. It went crazy after that every extra dollar went towards new snakes and cages. Then you have to feed all of those snakes! Wow did it get expensive fast.

With prices so low today I think that most ball python morphs are affordable to just about everyone. You just have to find a project that you are in love with and invest in it and work it to the fruition! It will pay off in the end and you will have a lot of fun along the way. The experience is well worth it!

    Just my take on things!

I have had payment plans with a breeder in the past of about $1000- all are paid off now and awaiting warmer weather :)
I will not use credit for buying snakes, as much as I would like to sometimes.

None of my debt is from snakes. I use bonus and Overtime money for snakes. Just spent part of my yearly bonus yesterday as a matter of fact and picked up 2 new balls and 1 borneo. Got three more snakes in my sites for spring purchases and I should have plenty left for when babies start coming, so I can pick up a couple of them as well.

OK, ok I miss read beacause we all know that after 11pm I am slow...lol
I have debt from med bills ect... but not my herps...
Also running a rescue I am not buying, selling or breeding...
I always know if I can financially care for the ones that come into rescue. Or else I have to say no. There is a fine line between rescue and hoarding and you have got to stay above this line as a rescue.
I also always have to have a special savings (god for bid) because sadly some people have no issue (or ethics) with dropping animals on our doorstep:(
I will say what I am able to do is expensive (We work very very hard for this) but also very fulfilling, it helps me to be happy when I wake up..
    Thanks

I do not think anyone would admit that they are in debt because of their hobby. At least not here. It can be detrimental to their rep. Basically, noone in their right mind is going to tell on themselves. It is like asking if you have bad credit. :colbert:

Well, so far, 35.29% have stated that their amount of debt is "to insane to disclose", so I would say that 35.29% says volumes.

I should have been more specific.. Sorry about that.

    Ding Ding DING!!!

No debt means I don't have to stress about selling an animal to pay credit cards bill.

Every snake I own is PAID FOR. I don't even do payment plans.

I have 0 debt. For me anything that is a hobby or for enjoyment I dont put it on credit cards. When I open my business I will have a card to put anything like that on but it will be a business only card.
