vomiting and listless bp
Hi all,
I am writing this about a friend's bp, so I may not have all the necessary info. He is at work and asked if there was anything I could do. If you can provide any help, it would be much appreciated.
Sally is nearly full grown, hasn't eaten since the fall and has started vomiting green bile looking material and is not moving around. I am going to pick her up in a couple hours if I can get her into the reptile vet here in town. I am waiting on them to call me back. I can check her humidity and temp when I get over there. Her home is a split vivarium/terrarium and is probably too large for her. I'm concerned that she may have contracted an infection from the "wet side". I know that isn't much to go on, but if you know anything that may be helpful please share!
I keep a bp of my own, so I am fairly knowledgeable....but not when it comes to illness. Thanks!

Re: vomiting and listless bp
I dont know what the wet side is but it doesnt sound good. there is no need for a wet side.
A vet trip is the best advice at this point. good luck.

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Quarantine the animal if there are other snakes. Also make sure after you have handled his snake to wash all your clothes. shower and put new ones on to make sure whatever it is you snake doesn't get infected with it.
Aside that hope for the best and its good that your taking her to the vet
Good luck :)

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Ask what they clean with, sounds like she could be poisoned?

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Thanks. I will be sure that nothing comes in contact with my snake!
He has her in a huge glass tank and there is a 6" high wall splitting the tank in half. So one side is normal and the other side has water with a running filter. Similar to a turtle setup I guess.
His maid service was at his house on saturday and there is no telling what they use. That is certainly a good point though. To my knowledge she had been healthy up until yesterday. Honestly, I haven't seen her in a few months though.
The vet's machine says they are in training for another hour still, I'm hoping they can see her right away after that.

Re: vomiting and listless bp
also...do you have a suggestion on what I could transport her in?

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Transport in a cardboard box with a heat pack. Cover heat pack with lots of newspaper so she cant burn herself.
That would be my idea

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Put her in a cheap pillow case and make a tight not, rubberband around the knot just to make sure she cant get out.
Then, put her into a plastic tub or box, and keep her warm. Not too warm though, high 70's to 80's if possible. Warm up your car first if you live in cold weather.
Any refrigerated poop, feeding info, set up info would help the vet. I'd rather your "friend" go with you, because they will be able to answer the vet's questions since you seem to know nothing other than the snake is very sick.
I also hope you are expecting your friend to pay for this.

Re: vomiting and listless bp
i dont know about anyone else but that set-up sounds a little ridiculous from what i have read about it . . . if you have a BP and know how to properly care for it (temps, humidity, tank size, feeding) maybe you should go over it with ur friend and get that snake into a proper set-up/enclosure when he gets back from the vet . . . you said you know about BP's but not about illness so sit ur friend down and go over everything you know with him to avoid this in the future :) , isn't that what friends are for?

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Thanks. He is an anesthesiologist, so taking the day or even a couple hours off really isn't an option. He will gladly pay for it, I am just helping him out. I know what her habitat consists of, her feeding schedule, her symptoms and approx age are, so hopefully that will give the vet enough info. There is no poop but I am going to try and take some of the vomit if I can. They can't get her in for a couple more hours, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes indeed it is! Some people don't respond to that well and my friend is one of them. Her habitat is pretty crazy, but his intentions are good. I think if Sally makes it through this she may be coming to live here anyway and I can set her up properly. He asked me to take her a few months ago and I declined, but it may be for the best after all.

Re: vomiting and listless bp
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by taking your friends snake to the vet. You should really go over husbandry with your friend. Here is a link to the care sheet on BPnet http://ball-pythons.net/modules/Sect...warticle&id=59 You should print it off for your friend. I hope every thing turns out ok for the snake keep us updated.

Re: vomiting and listless bp
If the snake is vomiting and listless, I'd be getting it to the vet asap, not waiting a few hours. Not sure what kind of vet it is, but any animal that is vomiting and listless, usually is told to come in right away.
Sounds like you care enough about the snake, I'd be taking control over it. If your friend can't give it what it needs, make him understand that it's the best option.
Good luck and keep us posted ;)

Re: vomiting and listless bp
Thanks everyone. I went to pick her up for the appt. and she was already dead. I pick my friends 10 yr old daughter up from school everyday and she will devastated.
I called the vet first thing this am, was told they were in training till 11:30...then called at 11:30 and was told that they were booked but would try to work me in at 1:30...I really don't think she gave a darn. They are the only herp vet in the area, so my options were limited. All of the other vets referred me to the same place...
Anyway, thanks again.:(
