Future herp
So I want to eventually add an arboreal boa to the Herp Closet and was wondering which ones you suggest. I know they aren't the friendliest so I guess which ones do you prefer that look good. If I get him I want to put him in a nice vivarium so he is more visible.

Re: Future herp
Amazon Tree Boas (Corallus hortulanus) are probably the best beginner arboreal. They are a bit smaller, with much smaller heads. It'll get you used to a possible "temperamental attitude". Seeing as ATBs are generally more aggressive than GTPs and ETBs, it will get you used to dodging. :)
They also have less of a strict care requirement and come in a rainbow of colors and patterns.

Re: Future herp
Emerald Bay has a pair of adorable little brown (not sure of morph/locale) that I wouldn't mind owning. What is a good site to look at morphs/locales?

Re: Future herp
They are probably Garden Phases.
Here are some links I usually post concerning Amazon Tree Boas.
http://www.urbanjungles.com/atbbasics.htm One of the better care sheets and has an awesome color/pattern phase guide.
http://www.boakingdom.com/treeboa.html Nice care sheet, neat example of how ATBs change throughout the aging process.
http://www.corallus.com/ Packed with information of all kinds. From care sheets (neonate and adult), to Natural History, Habitat, etc. Very nice web site for all Corallus species.

Re: Future herp
the corallus.com site doesn't work, but the others did fine. Thanks for the help!
I think I will be going with the Amazon for now. Not sure when I will be getting them or what colr. I love the red ones though. I have decided though to keep it in a sterilite tub while it is small and then move it up to an AP cage. I assume they cannot be kept in the full 2'x2'x2' cages from a juvenile?

Re: Future herp
I want an amazon personally...just throwing that out there.

I guess his site went down, that's a pity.
2'x2'x2' is a little large for a neonate. Most people keep them in a shoe box size (with perches) for the first few months.
For a Juvenile (1 year plus), 2'x2'x2' is acceptable. Just remember, they need room to thermo regulate, and the enclosure also needs to be able to hold humidity very well.

They are a wonderful choice! :D

Re: Future herp
The random comment is my fiancee...lol
I think the one at Emerlad Bay is around 2'-2.5'. I'm not exactly sure and I don't see stretching him out being an option to see. Is that still considered a neonate?

Re: Future herp
I would probably guess it's a yearling at that size. ATB's are cool, just make sure to get CBB (I preach that enough, huh?) Terry Phillips is selling some for 175 on the Morelia Viridis forum. He's a reasonable guy with usually reasonable prices, not selling his stuff, just saying if you find one for 50 or 75 it's probably a WC.

Re: Future herp
Anyone know an online breeder site? I was looking at GHI and am REALLY diggin the Red Hot and Candycane...heck, I like all of his but he doesn't have any available. That is going to be the biggest issue is deciding on a color because i'm bound to find one I like and then end up finding one I like more.

Re: Future herp
They have forums dedicated to EVERYTHING! google Amazon tree boa forum or copy and paste the scientific name in with forum and see what you get.
-
Re: Future herp
You may also try some other big breeders that you don't automatically think would have them (like NERD). You may find that they have animals from GHI. GHI animals are super sweet looking in person, so if I were to get another i'd shoot for one from them.

Re: Future herp
tried the forum thing and didn't come up with anything. The place that had a forum was under construction...
I checked some major breeders sites, BHB, Ralph Davis, 8Ball, NERD, and nothing there either.

Re: Future herp
Actually, I personally am good friends with Mitch(diamondreptiles), he has Green Tree Pythons that have a great temperment. His GTP's have actually one of the best temperments i've seen on the aroboreal species. So if you want to get one, that has better temperment, and will not try to "kill" you if your hand goes in the tank, then talk to Mitch. If you need any information to get in touch with him let me know, or just shoot me a msg.
*EDIT*
The only thing is, it's a python, not a boa. lol

With NERD I would call to see what they have. They have tons of stuff that's not listed on their site.

Re: Future herp
At two and a half feet, it would be considered a juvenile.
Check www.Kingsnake.com (Classifieds) they have quite a few reputable dealers with some nice looking ATBs. I even saw a few Reds. Just remember to check the dealer/breeder/seller on the BOI (Fauna) before finalizing a sale.

Re: Future herp
I don't know your experience with snakes, but ATB's are much more forgiving that a green tree.
Neal, Green trees typically have great dispositions, as do many emeralds.
-
Re: Future herp
http://www.amazontreeboa.org/ Mike Heinrich may have some beautiful captive bred Amazons for sale. Kathy Love who you can get ahold of through this sight may have some as well.
Both of them you would have to email.

Emerald Tree Boas are more forgiving than Green Tree Pythons. :D
I'm still a bit worried about getting a GTP. :P

What is the Fauna thing? I have heard of it but never actually looked at it or seen it.

I'm not sure what i would consider myself as when it comes to experience but I have 2 bps and a RTB. After reading the caresheets it seems relatively straight forward. I am going to go with an ATB though for my arboreal.

I have checked out his site but it doesn't show any available animals, plus it will probably be 3+ months before I get one.
I talked to a guy/girl (not sure, no name at the end of the email) at GHI about their reds, tigers, and candycanes and was quoted at reds starting at $350, Tigers at $1500, and candycanes are not available yet :(. I may go with them depending on the reds that ATB.org has.

Re: Future herp
Need to go threw the "mines prettier than yours" again? ha. :D
Emeralds probably are more forgiving, but ATBs are a lot like carpets to the python family. Hardy, and a lot less involvement. I never try to push someone into getting something they are not willing to commit to and I think a GTP or ETB is something the OP may not be ready for.

The Board of Inquiry; It's where you go to post your experiences with a dealer( positive or negative).
http://faunaclassifieds.com/ Sign up there.
http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/foru...splay.php?f=13 Go there and search for the seller. You can search by name, email, website url or business name.

I didn't think I needed to say it again. It's obviously sunk in on you! :D
Honestly, between me and you..I like them all, equally (ETBs, ATBs, GTPs). Each have different qualities that make them the coolest arboreal to own. I just happened to have seen a deal (from a reputable dealer) on the ETB first.

Well thanks for taking me into consideration. :gj: lol. I have only had bps since November so I don't think I qualify as too experienced. I do spend about half my day on here so I'm not sure how much that accounts for. I wouldn't want to get a snake that is going to be too much so I think the GTPs and ETBs will have to wait a bit.
Also just got a quote on a red from ATB.org and it is about the same as the GHI. Might just wait until Daytona to pick one up since I plan on picking up a few bps while I'm there.
-
Re: Future herp
if you go to daytona, make sure that you buy a CBB one. there will be many people there selling WC.

Who did you talk too? Keep in mind US CB will be a bit more expensive than W/C. At Daytona, as far as amazons go you will see probably 80-90% wild caught over captive bred. So do some research before you go with a sellar:gj: Anyway Amazons are freakin Sweet:banana:

Re: Future herp
I talked to Mike Heinrich. He isn't going to be at Daytona but he is going to be at Tinley Park, since he does live in Chicago anyways.
