calling all car mechanics

I have a question in regards to a 2003 chevy venture. Where are the oxygen sensors located and how do I replace them? Is there a schematic showing the wiring details for each sensor and if so, where can I find it. thanx.

your best bet is to buy the factory service manual for the vehicle.
the manual will contain all the wiring diagrams as well as detailed instructions on replacing and testing all your sensors.

yeah.. told my father in law that, but he's not going to listen to that easy advice :P, so I figured I better get some knowledge and let my husband fix it for him... before he goes crash or something.

Your O2 Sensor should be located just before the catalytic converter.

Depending on the car, there could be several. Check the exhaust manifold right after the engine, also check right before and right after the cat. Best of luck!

We know there are two sensors.. I know one is after the cat convertor, but the other one was eluding us... thanx for the link too. hopefully we can get it fixed. :D ugh now to get my truck fixed... nothing like losing a tire while driving.. :rolleye2:

Edit, it's H02S1 number 6.

And you shouldn't have to wire anything, you should be able to get a stock O2 sensor and have it plug in where the old one was.

Depending on your skills with a soldering gun buying a OEM replacement might not be worth it. 02 sensors are not a cheap part. If you understand wiring diagrams I'll be more than happy to send you those. If not, mixing the volt wire and the heating element lead would be a big headache. OEM is the easiest and from my small experience with a 3400 a plug and go sensor might be best. This guy looks like a huge pain to get to.

David.. how much does the part run for? the pic you posted hopefully will help. I'll print it and show it to hubby so he can take a look and compare. he also is good with wiring so I'm sure he wont mix things up. I know we can take it to Advanced Auto by us and they will hook it up to the diagnostic machine for free, so that should help us figure out which sensor is the culprit. this week just has not been a good week for cars for us.. ugh!!!

The site I'm using says 125.00 to 162.00 plus tax along with "call for exact pricing". I can send you any info he might need. If you take it to an auto parts store PLEASE write the exact code down and post it. Should start with a "P" then have 4 numbers.


As much as I doubt it, any chance you are still within factory or extended warranty? The dealership would eat the code testing and replacing of the part.

We're talking about OEM from the dealership. Not reworked ones or off brand ones.

The diagram shows the local of it.

Do yourself a favor, do not buy an aftermarket O2 sensor. Spend the extra at the dealership and replace it once.

don't think my father-in-law's car is still under warrenty. something I'd have to ask him. As for buying an aftermarket part.. not sure if thats the route hubby would take either, but its up to my FIL. hopefully I can steer him in the right direction. thanx for all the help and info. any little bit helps. :D

To find the other o2 sensor I need to know weather its a 6 or 4 cylinder. If its a 4 cylinder it is located on the exhaust manifold at the collector, after you find that one go for a drive and get it warm before you put a wrench on it. If its a 6 cylinder you have to follow the y pipe from the two cylinder banks down to the back of the engine compartment you may be able to see this one from the top. If you can't see it from under the hood it should be right where the two pipes come together. After removing the old one you may be able to reuse the sensor buy carefully pouring a small amount of gas on it to burn of excess carbon build up on the old sensor. Usually the sensor before the converter goes bad due to carbon build up. One last question do you know how many miles are on the van.

3.4L v6 is the only motor offered in that car. My guess from the diagram is that it will be in the top of the exhaust manifold and a huge pain in the but to get to.

even on the 3.4 you can get at it from the top on some vehicles thats why they put it there. I had to do a couple of these for friends but all have been in like impalas. I thought that came in a 4 cylinder model. I haven't worked on to many ventures. Not a vehicle we see very often in the d if people have mini vans around here they are typically carivans.
