Do you smoke?
I just read a post about someone trying to quit smoking and I had been thinking about how many people smoke nowadays as compared to earlier generations. It seems that smoking is on the decline, but I could be jaded by living in California with so many anti-smoking laws. Both of my parents smoked for years and fortunately non of their kids picked up the habit. (I did smoke a cigarette (or puffed a cigarette) once when I was around 8 and asked my mother if I could smoke. Probably the best lesson she could have ever done for me :P)
BTW, to keep this thread from being locked, I am only referring to tobacco cigarettes.

Re: Do you smoke?
Unfortunately yes i do. About a pack a day. :(

Re: Do you smoke?
I smoked for nine years, and quit on the first try close to two years ago. I do not like to be around it now, but I do not get upset if someone smokes around me.

Re: Do you smoke?
I wish I could have answered this one "no" but unfortunately I smoke - much less than I used to but it's an old and hard habit to break. I'm old enough that I was a teen when the Malboro Man was still cool and all the gorgeous Hollywood stars smoked publically. In my home growing up, one parent smoked and out of the 5 kids they raised all of us started smoking young and all of us still smoke to this day. :(
My husband doesn't smoke and wishes I didn't. Of our 4 kids only the 21 year old smokes (or admits to doing so). So far I haven't seen signs of it with my 17 and 15 year olds and I hope they break the cycle. I've tried so hard as a parent to give them the message that this is an addiction that they just don't want to have to deal with. I won't allow them to touch my cigarettes (none of that "go get mom her smokes" stuff in my house). I honestly tell them this is an addiction and I didn't know better the first time I tried a puff. They are so much better informed as kids than I was back then.
I always feel bad that my addicition may someday take me away from them before my time. Perhaps one day that feeling will be stronger than this awful addiction.

Re: Do you smoke?
I smoked for 30 years. I recently had my 7th year anniversary for quitting. I really don't like people to smoke around me that much, but I tolerate it well enough that I don't say anything. Having smoked for so long I know what it's like to be dumped on by some militant anti-smoker and I really don't want to do that to others.
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I've grown up around smokers. My mom smokes. My dad, stepfather, and my mom's current boyfriend all smoke. My brother smokes on occasion. My 14 year old sister told me she smokes when she can bum a cigarette off her friends, and my husband's friends smoke. (my husband has tried a clove cig, and hookah but does not smoke anything. He has tried those only once and told me he would not smoke hookah unless I was ok with it). Oh and a ton of my friends smoke.
I feel like I'm the only person that doesn't smoke around here. I hate the smell of smoke (I like the smell of cloves though but would prefer not being around cigarettes period), and I think the habit is disgusting. I don't mind if other people smoke as long as they are doing it away from me and they don't offer me one. I have made it a rule in my house that there will be no smoking and my husband respects that.
I actually have dreams about trying a cigarette and I wake up not being able to breathe. So yeah, that is my take on cigarettes. Oh and the smell of a cigar will make me want to puke.

Re: Do you smoke?
I smoke cigars but its usually only when we go out drinking. I guess vices just go together.
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I'm old enough to remember how bad public smoking used to be, especially in airplanes, restaurants and movie theaters.
I know public smoking laws are a lot better now so it doesn't really bother me too much if people smoke in open areas if I'm able to get away, but I think I'm a lot less tolerant than I used to be. As a kid I remember having to put up with my parents smoking on long car trips in rainy weather and I couldn't do much but sit there in a smoke filled tin can. :(
Smoking has been coming up a lot lately with my kids for some reason. We've been watching a lot of older movies like the Alien series and older James Bond movies. It seemed like everyone used to smoke back then...
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I smoke as well. I'm not allowed, I mean I don't smoke in the house or in the cars. I try to keep that stench far away from the kids. I was just recently attacked by my crumb snatchers to quit. I'm doing it. This weekend... LOL:)

Re: Do you smoke?
I do not smoke! Both of my parents smoke and I did for a few years. But I have not touch a cancer stick in many years. I even liked a little pinched between my lip and gum. Then to find out after years of my parents smoking and then a few years of my own I am allergic to tobacco. I also have asthma. So my sensitivity level is very high I cant stand the smell of it. Now that people can not smoke inside anymore, you have to walk past all them smoking right outside the door to the place.
The health risks alone should make people want to quit or not start in the first place. Smoking leads to so many problems. It should be illegal but the government makes so much money from it...
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I don't smoke, and don't really have an issue with people smoking around me as long as there is good ventilation. I am VERY allergic to the smoke and will wheeze for days afterward.
I had to clarify this because I said it really bothered me, but honestly I was thinking of a more physical reaction than emotional one.

That really bothers me. I think it is pretty selfish when people force others to suffer from their bad habit. I wouldn't care if they would just walk 20 feet away from the entrance.

Re: Do you smoke?
i took my one and only puff when i was 25 and it tasted about the way i figured, like a dirty sock. so i never picked up another one.

Re: Do you smoke?

Re: Do you smoke?
I grew up raised my a heavy smoker, I smoked for 16 years and I quit back in 2005  (yes I am that old :O)
People smoking around me do not bother me unless I am eating (I can't stand trying to eat while smelling cigarettes) no longer a problem those days.

I dont think it should be illegal! Doesnt our government have enough control over our lives. They where even considering making the snakes we love illegal. I agree some people show no consideration. But making tobacco illegal is not the answer.
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I grew up with smokers, married a smoker and yes I was a smoker for nearly 15 years. I quit cold turkey 46 days ago and still going strong. I am only 29 and smoked over half of my life :O!
-
Re: Do you smoke?
Well I wish I could say I had quit, but it was so hart to quit when your spouse is still puff puffing away rite there in front of you.
When I was growing up my mother smoked a lot, 1-2 packs a day, all of my aunts smoked, all the men in the family smoked cigars. I started smoking when I was 15, a friend and I had climbed up onto the roof (don't ask why) and when a gust of wind blew by and knocked the ladder down we were stuck. with a few hours of nothing to do she offered me a cig, and I have been smoking ever since.
I quit for both of my pregnancys, and just recently I passed the 2 week mark, then with my hubby smoking, and a lot of bad things are happening rite now, I fell off the wagon.
In a little while I will try and quit again, when my husband starts to see I need his help too.

Re: Do you smoke?
After my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer, I never will.

Re: Do you smoke?

Smoking is a serious health risk. Even to people who have never touched one in their life.
Over 438,000 people (in the US) died from smoking last year. 50,000 from secondhand smoke.

No doubt, but there are many things that are hazardous to people. Should the government outlaw fast food and junk food?
I have no problem with people smoking or doing anything to themselves as long as it doesn't harm the people around them. Why should our government treat everyone like children? However, I'm not at all opposed to regulations as far as where people can smoke. And I also think they should impose more restrictions on advertising.
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I am all for regulations on where it is ok and not ok to smoke.
With Shaun quitting 4 days ago, I have tried very hard to be respectful of him. I don't smoke nearly as much when he is home. Or I am very discreet about it, and I do smoke outside. I don't rub it in that I am still smoking. He needs my support.
I also try very hard to be respectful of others who don't smoke. I don't smoke in front of any entrances, I really don't smoke when I am out at all. I don't see any reason why anyone should have to breathe in the toxins because I smoke.

Medical malpractice kills almost 200,000 people per year in the US. Should we make doctors illegal. I smoke once in awhile in the privacy of my back yard (3.5 acres). The government should never have the right to tell me I can't. There is a time and place. I am all for regulating not banning.
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I do smoke and soon hope not to be... I am very proud of my wife which has quite and doing really well. I hope I am that strong but I know that this will be one of the toughest things I will ever do.

That will not effect the people around us. 3 out of 4 people that die are smokers, and one is not should be enough. Killing people just for walking down the street.
I know a 15 year old kid who can't run 180' (home plate to second base from when we play baseball) because he's having breathing problems because his parents are heavy smokers and light up about a pack a day EACH. I go to his house and I'm in tears because there is so much smoke in the air. Is that fair to him? He could potentially lose his life early because his parents get some sort of pleasure from smoking?
-
Re: Do you smoke?
I smoked a pack a day for 5+ years. Marlboro Lights FTW!
Any who, I quit almost a year ago cold turkey, and never looked back. I don't mind if someone smokes around me now. But I will say that once you've smoked and quit, you realize just how bad you USED to smell. I work with a lot of guys that smoke, (carpenter), and after your done smoking, you REEK!! That may help some people quit I hope, quitting was one of the best things I ever did.

Re: Do you smoke?
My Son tells me that they have been discussing in one of his classes the fact that there is a bill being drafted now to make smoking in your car illegal if there are minor children in there with you. What next? Will they make it illegal to smoke in your own home if there are children present?

This is not a defense of parents that smoke but I do feel that in your example what is really at issue here is that young man's parents and their decision making as parents about a risk to their child. Whether that risk might be in exposing him to levels of secondhand smoke or any other of the myriad of things that parents must decide everyday they raise their children, I believe this case it is more about poor decision making. Smoking is the vehicle of harm but the greater harm to my mind is in those parents that aren't taking the steps they should to respect their child and protect him.

LOL LOL LOL
YOU sir, are the PERFECT customer.
You're hooked, hook line and sinker.
You do know, don't you, that tobacco is one of if not the most taxed commodity out there, right?
Who sanctions the use of the most addictive drug known to man? Who regulates that sanction? Who allows this regulated and sanctioned drug to be advertised in almost all known media? Who benefits from the growing and selling of raw tobacco, the manufacturing and selling of cigarettes, the taxes paid on the delivery vehicle of the sanctioned and regulated most addictive drug known to man go where and please, tell me again why the government can't TELL you not to smoke?
If you please....

Re: Do you smoke?
Wow...I'm not the only one allergic to the stuff! From the looks I get when I try to let people know, I was starting to feel freakish. :D
Never, ever, ever. I can't even be around others that do because it causes my sinuses and eventually my throat to swell shut. And I live in Colorado - the chimney state.
Neither of my parents smoke either...because their parents (my grandparents) did and they hated it. ALL FOUR of my grandparents died from issues that came from smoking!
I wish some beetle or something would come along and wipe out all the tobacco crops! Then EVERYONE would have to quit cold-turkey. :)

I'd hope people would know better than to smoke around children without a government ban. Too much to hope for, I know.

Re: Do you smoke?
Yes I smoke, and I enjoy it intensely.
Yes I know it will kill me.
Yes I know you don't want to smell it.
Yes I know you don't want to see me do it.
Yes I know I'm setting a bad example for the rest of the human race.
Yes I know you have a burning need to save me from myself.
That's just the way life goes sometimes.
Happiness will be the last drag from the last cig on the last day of my life....which for me, and most of you, will happen sometime on the evening of 21 December 2012 :O :weirdface :D  But, that's a whole different thread.

I wish that I have no need for any wish.

Ahh, but the need to strive for the things we wish for drives the human soul, and fuels the human experiment.
Would you agree that without need, we would never seek to improve our selves?

I would disagree for a small part.
There are some who seek for the sake of seeking not for the need of finding.

It's already illegal in Ohio to smoke in your car if there's a minor child present. It's common sense to me, but I've met a lot of people from Ohio......
Why should your child have to suffer because you want to kill yourself? As far as I'm concerned if you smoke in your car, or in your house when you have minor children you need to reprioritize. Seriously? Not having to go outside to smoke is more important than your child's health?
Those of you that do these things are thinking "This person has never smoked, or doesn't have kids." I've smoked on and off for 11 years. For 7 of those years I've had a child and I have never smoked in my house or my car for this reason. I also quit for the last time in November. It's just not worth it anymore.

On that point, we can agree. But, I still wonder if the wish for discovery makes them seek in the first place?

It may be so for some. Yet for others it may be the seeking itself.
Again it gets back to words which leads to definitions and then you find out things are more alike than disparate until one tiny thing that means much to both sides and yet is not the same to both sides, stands there, innocently existing.
That is yet another facet of what we are bouncing around.

This is an interesting statement.
I'm not singling you out, just using your words to express a sentiment that is often seen when speaking/writing of this subject.
The need of the.... whathaveyou (drug, cigarette, alcohol, etc.) non-user, to appologize to the....whathaveyou(drug, cigarette, alcohol, etc.) user.
Does it make you wonder why you feel this way? You being anyone reading this, not anyone person in particular.

Re: Do you smoke?
I've never smoked anything in my 37 years of wandering this planet. What happens to people in house fires when they breath in smoke? THEY DIE.
Now I don't mind if people smoke around me I just move a little bit farter away. Everyone I know that smokes are very considerate and will ask first or stand somewhere where the smoke wont be bothersome. I grew up in a family where everyone smoked but me. My mom, dad, sister, brother all smoked.
cigarettes, cigars, pips, weed you name it they smoked it. But I stayed away because it thought it was just plane gross.

Re: Do you smoke?
um..people die cuz the human body can not tolerate that thick harrsh smoke..thats like saying eating poison candy will kill you so i wont eat any candy....
