I built a little box made of leftover melamine and plywood (top). Has worked great so far. Doesn't smell, they haven't been able to chew out of it, and provides a lot of security for them.

i here ya i have my plans drawn up for a rat shed and to fill it with racks just need the GREEN$$$$$$$ LoL
hopefully this summer i will get it done don't like the rats in my house

I'm just going to buy one of the cheaper ones at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards or whatever. Looking for something like an 8' x 14' (so it can fit other stuff we have as well). Then I get to insulate it, yay. Should be a fun project.

closest lowes, or home depot or any of them to me is a 4 hour drive in either direction LoL so im stuck with building one

Question about a shed... If you live in a place that gets hot as heck in the summer I'm assuming you just run power out to it, insulate it and put a wall AC unit in?

An exhaust fan would help a lot. I can't really imagine someone using an AC, but I'm sure someone has before.
