    Tub setup questions...
Ok, So the female snake I am rescuing I cant keep her at my boyfriends with the other snake we have. I am not allowed to have a snake at my current residence (I live with my dad... it sucks, his girlfriend wont even let me have my salamanders in the house.)

So if I put the snake in a tub could I keep it under my bed or in my closet?

What about the UTH, it would be on the carpet. Do I have to put it on something else? Should I cover it with the foil?

I want to have the right set up with being able to hide it well from my dad's girlfriend. My boyfriend and I have been looking at houses so this will only be a temporary thing.

I have everything else but the tub... bedding, hides, water dish, UTH, dimmers, ordered a Ranco thermostat, acurite thermometer/hydgrometer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am the queen of hiding snakes as you are "not supposed to have animals in the dorms". Just so no one jumps on me for this, I can guarantee no one cares. The people come in for inspections and before they look around they ask us to make sure we have hidden everything we need to. It is just school protocol so no one has any crazy allergic reactions to animals. Who is allergic to snakes anyway? lol

If I put a tub on carpet, I always put a peice of foam board down underneath it. It just makes it easier to move around and keeps it from radiating all of the heat into the ground. Right now I am keeping them in an armoir because it was getting too cold under the bed (by the window). They are fine in there. :3

She will be fine as long as it is a temporary thing. If she is under your bed, I assume some light will filter in so it won't be 100% blackness all the time.

    Good luck!

What kind of foam board would be good? And where would be a good place to get it? I personally have never heard of it.

My dad's girlfriend doesnt go in my room very often but if she does happen to go in there I just want to make sure it looks like another bin under my bed. Yes I can put it near the window side, thats where the outlet is anyways.

What size tub for a snake that is about a foot and a half and weighs 118 grams? She is skinny so i expect her to gain some weight with me as well!

Foil on the bottom of the tub or no? Not sure how different setting up a tub is from a glass tank.

You are always so quick to give out advice and this time it's bad advice. Not about the tub, but about being a sneak and a cheat. How can you guarantee no one cares? You can only assume. Same for allergies. Other people have a right to know whether you think so or not.

Hope your school doesn't spray for bugs while you're in class.

i had that problem in my apartment but it is rare that my land lord comes in so i moved my snake to a tub near boxes of stuff so it blends in out in the open. i risk a $250 dollar fine but i don't think your dad will do that. you need to weigh the the benefit/consequences.

There wont be any consequences at all. I mean they know how I am, always bringing home stray dogs and such. If I can keep the snake from them thats what I would rather do. If they find it, no big deal. I mean the worse thing they can do is have me put it in the garage... and thats heated so no big deal there. I wont get kicked out or anything like that. I just need to find out how to set it up.

Thats really nice of you :/
The Residence advisor who lives across the hall from me has a cat. I think no one cares. If I get in trouble for it, that is my responsibility to deal with, not yours.
My school doesn't "spray for bugs". They don't enter the rooms except for inspection, which is once a year, and I am present for this inspection.

    Please take your concern elsewhere.

You can buy foam board at most drug stores. It is like two poster boards slapped onto a piece of foam. As for tubs, I use 16qt iris tubs for now. She should be fine in that temporarily.

The main issue with putting a tub under your bed, is the ground is normally much colder than the ambient temperature in the room, because heat rises.

    BP?

I'm not going to give you my opinion on weather is right or wrong for someone to hide a pet from a parent...believe me, I've tried...pet rats..kittens..garter snakes...but they don't stay hidden for long. At most they stayed hidden for a few weeks... live and learn i guess : )

Anyway...I what I'm getting at is the most important thing is that the snake gets proper care. I would make sure the enclosure keeps the proper temps. and humidity as well as provides enough circulation before you bring her home. Lighting is not usually an issue with BPs. Also, be careful to check for drafts on the floor or near a window. Respiratory infections can set in quickly when their environment isn't to par not to mention the stress from moving.

Is there a better option for the snake?

this is indeed an interesting topic and I have tried every stunt but what worked the best is hiding them in plain sight

hiding from parents is probally not the best thing, to personally insult another member is surely in the tos somewhere! you have no rights! once everyone figures that out then we can get on with regular order of business.

my wife thought the same thing when she was at school then one day while she was at her moms for the weekend there was some water leak and they had to come in for a emergency repair and saw her hamster. it was not allowed so they went ahead and placed rat poison in its cage. she didnt like what they did but she was breaking the rules so what could she say no pets means no pets

I have the tub set up in my room now. I am measuring the temps and everything to make sure they are stable enough before she comes home. The room stays pretty warm and the door is always closed. The room is carpeted (I hope thats how you spell it). The room isnt drafty and the window has blinds and then fancy decorated curtains on it (thanks to my dad's girlfriend). I dont have to keep her under the bed really, just on the far side of my bed so she can not be seen from the door way. I dont think it is a big issue anyways since they never go in my room anyways.

One of my buddies goes to closing on his house this weekend. So I am gonna see once he settles in if I can keep the girl at his house til we buy our house and get moved in. The snake can NOT stay where she is at. I have to get her away from them before she ends up dead. I am also not a young teenager at all. I just ran into some money issues and ended back up with my dad. Things are on the rise, I am buying a house and moving back out.

I appreciate the concern and help from everyone. Thanks!

The rule here is, if they catch you with an animal, they confiscate it. They don't kill it. I don't leave my snakes alone, if I am gone for a few days, they either come with me or stay with a friend.
I am aware of the risk I am taking. It is my responsibility if the school takes action. I am not staying in the dorms permanently, I am moving in less than 2 months to my own apartment. I love my snakes, and if they were in any danger, I would have them stay with a friend of campus, but as of now, there is no danger. My dorm is not your typical dorm.
