    Male vs Female?
    Hey everyone!
I'm just wondering if there is a big difference between male and female BP's? I've saw somewhere that females usually get bigger than males, is that true? Also, how about temperament? It seems like with other animals females are usually more calm. I was also wondering why females usually cost more than males as well.

    Thanks!

A big difference between the two (expecially with morphs) is price. You are generally going to pay more for a female than a male.
As far as tempermant, there isn't much of a difference, just depends on the snake.
Females do get larger than males.

females are usualy more nippy in most animals. In BP's i dont think one is more agressive over another. Females do get larger and yes there is a big difference between males and females. one has a hemipenes (male) and thefemale has a cloaca. these are the sexual organs.

females tend to get bigger most times. ive been bit by just as many females as males. temperament just depends on the snake. females tend to cost more due to more demand for females as a breeders standpoint. most breeders would rather keep a female than a male for future breeding purposes. also females go up in price the bigger they get especially morph females

Thanks for all the reply's everyone!

I'm still not sure if i want a male or female, but now that i know there really isn't a big difference im leaning more towards male, just for price reasons.:P

    Thanks again,

Mike if you are looking for a straight up pet snake you really can't go far wrong with a nice male normal (non-morph) ball python. A lot of very reputable breeders have those normal males going for very reasonable prices since they aren't really needed in that breeder's plans. To get a snake from good breeder like that will help ensure you have a better first snake experience than anything a pet store could offer you but it won't break your budget.

definably would take this path. pet store snakes seem to always he unhealthy and irritable. of course i would be to in that little cage with everybody walking by.

More often than not its old pricing. It could be over inflated pricing. However, size will be a factor when you're looking at morphs. Also, a particularly nice specimen of a morph will command a higher price. If you contact a breeder about a snake you like, inquire about pricing.

I have seen male pastels go for as low as $75. Try to find a reptile show around you to find a good deal :D

My personal experience is that it will always depend on the snake. I have a 2000g normal female who is as close to affectionate as snakes get. I also have a 1800+g het. albino male who's as finicky as all get out and used to strike at me every time I walked by. I personally prefer females over males, but they're both amazing. I'd check with the breeders. Maybe they can get you a great snake.

I prefer males because the housing is easier in the long run. Most males won't outgrow a 32qt tub in their lifetimes. A big female would need more room.

A reptile show is a great way to purchase a Pastel because you can hold it and see the colors in person, but if you don't have a local show, buying online from a reputable breeder can be a great experience. If you need the name of a great breeder, drop me a PM.

I'm leaning more towards a female now because they get bigger, i wouldn't mind having a little bigger snake. :D

If it were me I would go with a male if you are not planning on breeding. If you are planning on breeding then you should go with a female.

I would contact Adam Wysocki 8ballpythons.com

You can't go wrong with with and 8ball snake. 4 of my 5 are from Adam. He is a great guy, just shoot him an e-mail he will get back with you....

Why would you go with a male over female? Just the price difference?

Sent over an e-mail to em a little earlier, cant wait to hear back from them!

    Thanks,

Once you get one, you will probably get another, and another, and another....

You might want to breed in the future, so getting a female might not be a bad idea :D Keep in mind you won't be able to breed her for at least 2 winters. ;)

Price difference is it. I payed $150 for my pastel boy and $600 for my Pastel Female.

If you aint breeding you don't need to waste your money.

Since buying morph is so hard in my country (I have not seen any for sale so far) I will talk only about normal BP's.

    I was told:
    - females are bigger than males
    - females are more calm than males
    - price of males and females is the same

    so... That's why I have female :).

Mike, some morphs are priced differently due to their look. Pastels can go from an eye popping, gorgeous snake all the way down to something that isn't as nice looking as half of the normals out there. While in theory an ugly Pastel can throw you some pretty babies, your chances of getting nice hatchlings is always upped by breeding top examples of that morph. Even for a pet Pastel you may as well have a very nice looking one. Nice looking ones tend to cost you more than barely-able-to-tell-it's-a-pastel Pastel.

When you are purchasing a snake it's sort of a mix of finding a great breeder who will be there long after you buy his/her snake if you have any problems or questions, as well as them offering very nice looking, healthy snakes at a cost that fits your budget.
