Incubator Setup Info
I just dug out my Pillsbury Cooler form Basement. and im gonna clean it up and make a incubator holder out of it the best i can as its only 2'x2'x3'. i have 2 3' wires flexwat 4'' wide.
I was gonna wrap that around the sides and plug into the t-stat set at the 89oF. and then also have the other 3ft piece on the bottom of each tub holding eggs set at 89oF
will having the felxwatt on the sides doo anything since my room temp is already 84. or should i just use it for keeping the eggs directly 89 rather the air.
Heres a picture and dont laugh im gonna try to snake it up. and damn thing still works with the lights and his giggle when you press the stomach.

That is the coolest thing I have ever seen! I would give you a million bucks for it (if I had a million bucks)

Re: Incubator Setup Info
Your probably gonna need more flexwatt than that.
You want the air temp inside the whole incubator 89 degrees. Not just the eggs.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
Just on a side note;
please don't cover up the sides.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
i got the impression from ppl who may mis informed me that the egg temps is the most important, along with the humidity.
how would flexwatt taped to the sided of the cooler keep air temps up inside.
way i was told and shown was to have the tubs set up and the thermostat probe by the eggs in the inside of the tub. so the surface reads 89.
So if i can maintain a 89-91 air temp inside the cooler then heat tape on the tubs the eggs are in is not needed. just hang the probe in the middle of the cooler for even heating.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
The probe on the eggs can cause condensation buildup inside the egg containers. Best from what I've heard is to just let it dangle inside the incubator. Do that, and the eggs will bring themselves up to the same temp. Humidity inside the egg boxes will be fine as long as you have your incubation substrate setup correctly.
I'd use a few feet of 11 inch flexwatt if possible. You could use what you have, just monitor it and see if it's enough. If more is needed, add more. But do it all before you have eggs of course.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
btw that thing is cool as hell id love to find something like that, im stuck with a ugly brown mini fridge

Re: Incubator Setup Info
i figured id lay down Styrofoam on bottom for better insulation then put the egg boxes on the foam. tape the 6ft of flexwatt around the cooler. i shouldn't need bigger flexwatt as my room is heated by a radiator space heater on its own t-stat set on 84. and at 84 it keeps amb room temps around 85-86.
once the flexwatt arrives ill get it taped in and set up to see if i can maintain the temps in the room temp i have.
Well it wont laugh when its incubating as it wont be pluged in or ill have frozen eggs. if it dont hold heat in well then ill set up a igloo cooler with a poly box inside that with the flexwatt.

i didnt find it i bought it at a grocery store a while back since they had too many and were tossing them away. they were used to display the holiday cookieso nly.
the cooler has .5inch of the Styrofoam on the walls and then a plastic or metal lining over that. keeps a steady 32 degrees.
well if this i cant get to work which i want it to then i can sell to the best bidder.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
That thing should be pretty well insulated. If you need, try lining the inside with Reflectix.

where would i find that stuff. i been looking for that tape to tape the heat tape down and i CAN NOT find it anywhere,

Re: Incubator Setup Info
Reflectix is next to the insulation at your local Lowes store. Or you can find it online.
The aluminum tape can be found at Walmart I believe in the hardware section, or you'd have a sure shot getting it at any hardware store.

Re: Incubator Setup Info
alright is that reflectix insulation like tape. cut to size and stick it. and how much is that per roll.
im getting the cooler set up tomorrow best i can till the flexwat arrives from reptilebasics. then ill get some trials ready.
forgot to say ill be using HATCHRITE

Re: Incubator Setup Info
No, Reflectix comes in a big roll and the size I have used was around 30 bucks a roll. Its a foil backed bubble insulation. A small local hardware store sells it off the roll, so you can also buy it in smaller quantities. So checking with smaller stores may be a good idea knowing you won't need much.
But try it without the insulation, you should be fine.
