    Eastern Hognose Pictures
This little guy is always so fiesty :) His color is starting to darken, so I anticipate him turning jet black by adulthood. We will see though. Fun little snake.

Have you been breeding these? Think I seen a thread about you hatching some awhile back, but I could be mistaken. I'd be interested in buying some pinkie eating hatchlings if you are, though.

I have plans to breed these once I get a decent group together; however, I am not breeding any now.

Finding some pinkie eating hatchlings is going to be fun for you. I tried for some time with no luck so opted to buy some wild caught adults to try my luck. I got a nice group of eggs from one of the females and failed miserably at getting the babies started eating pinkies. This one hognose is all I have left of the group. I think I have a method to get things done now, so I will probably make another go at it this year....unless I can find some CBB easterns that are already eating pinkies :)

I had wondered how that went. Last post I saw you had been keeping a group of toads to feed them. At least I thought it was you. The black female you got was gorgeous. Can't wait to see how this project shapes up in the future. :gj:

Have you tried asking A.C.? I'm pretty sure he hatches some every year and starts them on pinkies. I'm more into Westerns, so I never bothered contacting him. If any popped up locally, though, I'd be all over them.

i'm not saying this to be critical, i'm genuinly curious...
has it been proven that eastern and southerns can eat mice without it being detrimental to their health? i've read a couple articles, albeit older articles now, that have mentioned that there have been deaths documented with eastern and southern hogs eating rodents rather than anurans.

I could be wrong, but I think the problem with easterns turned out to be more to do with the hair on the rodents.

see i've read theories on everything from alkalinity to fur to lipid contents. it all makes sense, i just never talked to anyone that's actually gotten there's to EAT rodents.

From my reading, I take that the problem is associated with the nutritional content of rodents when compared to toads. Rodents are fatty and harder to digest. So like anything, it is very easy for overly eager keepers to 'overfeed' their easterns. If you keep hair out of the mix and do not attempt to 'fast grow' the snake...there should be no problem. These snakes are not to be treated like cornsnakes where you can feed the hell out of them without really any worry.....people forget that :)

Mine eats fuzzy mice without any issues....yet.
