    How do you feed?
Just curious as to how the majority of BP owners feed their snakes. Neither rat nor mouse matters, just the way you serve it.

Live, I grow my own so it is just easiest that way.

Gonna start a colony in the very near future (as in probably start trying to make babies tomorrow). Just fed Oakley and Hissy about 20 minutes ago actually.

Used to feed F/T until I reach 10 snakes than I started feeding live.

Good luck. I have ASF's. In January I had about 30 now I have over 100.

I find it very rewarding to do my own feeders.

I see no reason to not feed live if possible, there is nothing wrong with f/t or p/k I just prefer live.

    Re: How do you feed?
Mine have no feeding response to f/t and Oakley turns ferocious when I throw a mouse in with him. The thing is gone within a few seconds to a few minutes. I have dropped it in, turned around, and when I turned back around it was gone. We have only fed live 4 times because we couldn't have a colony but it will hopefully be a bit cheaper and we can make a little money off them.

For a few snakes it was convenient and cost effective, but with a growing collection it started to be a hassle plus I also started to breed my own feeder too which explain the transition (which not only is cost effective but also allow me to provide high quality food)

I just could not see myself feeding F/T to 40+ snakes.

    All of the above...

I feed mice, rats, ASFS... (variations of FT and live) and FT chicks.

All my hatchlings and juvies except 2 are on FT, and around 8 of my adults, the rest are mostly live feeders. 45 snakes in total and 3 species.

    Re: How do you feed?
I feed live, mostly because it is more convenient for me to breed my own, rather than drive the 50 miles to the only shop that sells frozen. Also my first BP took frozen for about 3 weeks then she decided she only wanted live. And now my collection is growing, from 1 to 7. :D
Also making the 50 mi trip in winter is near impossible with the only car I have being a front wheel drive, and the plows don't run on the road I live on. When it snows I'm stuck in town, and sometimes stuck at home.

So its all live for me.
mice and rats for now, maby later on down the road I may get into ASFs

i use to do live but i raise mine at a friends house and it got to be to hard to get over there to get rats and if some did not eat that week i would have to drive all the way back over there so no i raise them to about 40-45 days and then put them to sleep and freeze them

    Re: How do you feed?
should add both to poll. I feed F/T to all that will. Only one gets live, and only after going off F/T for a long time w/WEIGHT loss. Have another snake that refuses rats but destroys f/t mice at the tune of 6 or more a week. As a rule for me: allways f/t if possible, and allways the largest food up to 1 1/4 the snakes girth if possible.

    Re: How do you feed?
So far, mine all eat F/T...as hard as they hit them, I'm not sure my boys know they're dead. I'm sure as our collection grows, we'll run into one that will only eat live, and I have no problems with that. I jump that creek when I get there though.

it would be a paint to thaw and unpackage so many F/T if they are a breeder with 40+ snakes. live feeding from there breeding tub is the easiest id presume

Actually, now that I've re-read his post, I realize I screwed up and looked at it too fast. I thought he was saying too many snakes feed on F/T, like there's a ratio we should be keeping track of. Now that I've slown down and read it correctly, I realize he has too many to feed F/T. Sorry for my confusion.

    Re: How do you feed?
I feed f/t, cheaper and easier and my girl has the feeding response of a rtb, never had any issues with feeding so far(knock on wood).

I fed live once, because that was what she was on before I got her. The one time my feeder supplier was out of stock of the size of frozen feeder I was looking for, I bought live and fed p/k.

I just always worry about them getting bit by live. I know it happens in the wild and usually it's fine, but I don't want my snakes getting torn up by a big rat.

Thats why if I do I always watch. There has been one time I was afraid the mouse was trying to bite the snake on the head so I reached in and held it's head back.

If it looks like your snake is about to get bitten then just put the back end of an ink pen in their mouth. This technique always helps me to avoid prey bites.

I usually just smack them against a wall to break their necks lol. All of my breeder animals only get F/T.

I feed the babys live. But once the prey item gets larger and poses a bigger threat to the ball, i try my best to switch to f/t.
