substrate

I have heard some opinions about "gravel" being a poor choice for substrate. I have some quarter inch clean polished gravel that holds and regulates the temp of my tank cage nicely with the help of my uth. what is problem with that setup?:snake:

its not a good idea as it can hold heat and cause burns if you have a temperature regulation malfunction. it also will cause gut impact if he/she happens to swallow some and that requires an operation to fix.

i was thinking the same thing jeffj

my tank is pleasing to the eye, i also like the look of shredded cypress mulch. would this be more suitable?

cypress is messy. use aspen, its the best choice. pleasing to the eye some times isnt always the best option.

I like coco husk. Looks good, holds humidity well, and is not an impaction risk like gravel.

i agree with imartelli77 i like coco husk or coconut fiber there same thing just one is cheaper than the other

you can eco earth compressed coconut fiber in bundles or 3 for 10 bucks

imo thats the way to go

I just switched from wood chip or "reptibark" to coco husk and it's great. After a close impaction call I opted to change the substrate and coconut husk was a economical and still pleasing to the eye substitution. I also used to have issues with humidity, always too low, but once I made the switch I have been sitting at 58-60% no problem. I think my ball likes more too.

Reptile Aspen = no impact risk. and is much better at humidity then coconut husk i have found.

Why in the world would you buy "reptile" aspen? They have the same stuff in a HUGE bag in the rodent section for 1/3 of the price..

Cypress, newspaper, newsprint, kraft paper, aspen. It all works.

Find something that is easy for you to keep CLEAN.

reptile is finer mulched and a 30lb bag costs me $8 so why on earth wouldn't i? as other users have stated the Bag label is the same name brand the mulch size differs and i dont shop at the chain stores anyways ;)
