    rherostat and thermostat
i was thinking of using rheostats for night time heat source so the cage doesn't get to hot but i still get the light for viewing

anyone have any advice on what temp and where i should place the probe at. should i go by ambient temp or direct basking spot

i have my thermostats on order so im waiting of them. and im gonna need some help with were to place them too.

right now i get a ambient temp of almost 90 during the day with a out rages hot spot so im alway turning off the basking light on and off through out the day and if i go anywhere i just turn the lights off so it doesn't get to hot while im gone

    any suggestions

definitely control your hot spot so the snake doesn't get burned!!! Also, ditch the heat lamps. It's obvious that they are too high of a wattage, and BPs are nocturnal anyways so they don't need light. Light at night is especially not good: when is your snake supposed to feel like it's dark and comfortable so it can come out and get a drink, cruise, etc? When my snakes come out during the day (which they do on occasion) the ambient lighting in my room is bright enough for me to observe them.

With your temps so high, what are your humidity levels? Be sure you're not drying your snake out.

Also, I would just go to Home Depot and get a rheo ASAP if you are waiting for thermostats to show up. The rheo will cost you $11 and can reduce the wattage going into your heat source, which will help prevent cooking your poor snake in the mean time. The rheo will come in handy elsewhere around the house eventually, so it's not going to be a waste.

home depot employees never know what they are talking about. Check the LIGHTING section. Why would you check in the garden swctionfor a LIGHT dimmer?

Ok just so we are clear on definitions

rheostat is another word for a potentiometer. Its basically a knob you turn to increase resistance. When you wire it in line with something that requires electricity it reduces the watts used by the device. A light bulb gets dimmer (dimmer switch) and a heater gets...well less hot.

thermostat is a device that regulates temperature.

Big difference but both can be used to keep your snake from getting burned.

Umm a thermostat with night drop features comes to mind unless you are working with a budget. :)

Probe placement takes a few tries until you reach the efficiency level you are looking for. When you find it, use foil tape to secure it. Hope it helps.

    Hi,

Why not use red/ moonlight/ ceramic bulbs and use those 24/7?

You really don't need a night time drop in temps unless you are trying to get them breeding (and possibly not even then ).

Why does it need to be from Amazon? You could go with a cheaper thermostat like a ranco or a johnson controls.

Well, eventually all of your animals will be in the same caging unit right? I would just get one herpstat in that case and just use a dimmer for your quarantined girl.
You could contact the people who are selling the herpstat and ask if there is any other way you could pay.

You don't need the night drop.
You said you were on a tight budget, why don't you go with a less expensive thermostat? Since you are only running 4 cages it should be fine.

    Re: rherostat and thermostat
No, YOU are not listening to the advice that is being given to you! Have you even looked at all the different thermostats offered on the Reptile Basics site? If you are on a budget, you can get several cheaper thermostats and put one on each cage. Or, you can ASK YOUR MOTHER'S PERMISSION to use her credit card to purchase a more expensive unit. THINK about what you want, don't just expect us to be able to tell you. If you're not sure which Herpstat you want, READ the descriptions and see which one suits your setup best. Are you going to put all your snakes into a rack with daisy-chained flexwatt panels? If so, you can use the regular Herpstat. I personally like the Herpstat II, because you can run your full rack on one probe (if all the flexwatt is daisy-chained or a continuous sheet), and use the second probe for a second tub or an incubator. The Herpstat Pro is nice but if you're on a budget you don't need to spend that much. As has been previously mentioned, Reptile Basics offers several thermostats that are cheaper than the Herpstats, since budget is a concern for you.

You will need separate devices to use as timers for your lights if you want them switching on/off for day/night cycles, I do believe. These are very cheap and can be purchased at most stores, like Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart, etc.
