Re: Built my first rack!!
Oh, how amazed I am at how easy life is with rack systems!!! Looks , I'm just a little short though, so I wouldn't be able to reach the top... Ha ha....;)

I think what he is trying to say is that it looks like a bunch of wood nailed together.
That's not to say that you didn't do a good job. It is very nice. :gj: I plan on building one similar to that. Some people are worried more about what it looks like, then how it functions.
My only question is are you using back heat or belly heat? Reason I ask is because it seems like it would be hard to keep at a constant temp being as open as it is. Unless the room that you keep it in is at a constant 75 to 80 degrees.
Re: Built my first rack!!
It is set up with belly heat. Each level has its own 11" flex watt panel, with about 3/16" gap between the tub and heat. It seems to be pretty consistantly 90 on the warm side. It is a bunch of wood screwed together. I am more worried about function. I am not putting it on display or I would have built display cages.
Here is the site I got most of the ideas from. He used the cb-110 tubs.

Re: Built my first rack!!
what kinda wood did you use to build it
Re: Built my first rack!!
I used plain white wood. The snakes are only in contact with 3/16" smooth peg board.
Re: Built my first rack!!
Good job. As long as the conditions for your gang is met, that's all that matters. :gj:

Haha you were just just kidding?
Re: Built my first rack!!
Forgive my lack of knowledge ahead of time.... But whats the diff in using the cb70 tubs and say a sterlite or rubbermaid? The shape of the tub is slightly different, would it be any harder to do built a rack like this with a cheap 40qt sterlite tub you think?
Re: Built my first rack!!
dang, where did you keep ten snakes before building this?
Looks good btw, definitely plenty of craftmanship :gj:
Re: Built my first rack!!
The cb-70 has allot of floor space. I couldnt find any sizes I liked locally. So I ordered the cb-70's from office depot for $12 a pop. My bp's where in various ten and 30 gallon tanks set up that I have aquired over time. For now the old tanks will be used for feeder breeding. The rack is much more space friendly.
Re: Built my first rack!!
o ok i gotcha. i kind of like the shape of those tubs you have vs the shapes of my sterlites too.
Is there any particular benefits to using wood to build them besides cost? as aposed to say PVC pipe to frame? ive been thinking and the racks i want to build will only be 4 tubs high to fit under some counters. and just have multiple under them. I thought pvc could possibly be cheaper and plunty stable since its only 4 high.....Just a thought, what do you think?
Re: Built my first rack!!
What was the total cost building this monster?
:D
Thanks for the help!
Re: Built my first rack!!
prolly alot cheaper than it took to build mine
Re: Built my first rack!!
It cost me about $250 in materials (tubs, wood, heat tape, hardware) not including the t-stat ($140). So about $39 a tub.
Re: Built my first rack!!
oh thanks!
i'm trying to figure out my price range and space etc etc. did you looking into buying an already made shelving unit...like ones made for an office or something?...would it even work?
Re: Built my first rack!!
I thought about it. I figured it would cost so much to rig the shelves to work, so I just started from scratch. now before I expand my collection I need to build another. :D
