Netbooks - Who Uses One?

And do you like it? What brand and model?

I'm in the market for something portable, that I can get relatively fast internet surfing speeds, and can save photos on, and I'm not looking for a full sized laptop.

So many choices! I want to keep it under $300, but not sure what to choose! :tears:

Just got my wife an Acer from Wal-Mart. $298, she really likes it. 8.9" screen, easy to travel with and has wireless network. We us an aircard from US Cellular. AT&T is probally more wide spread and a little faster.

I have a Dell Mini 9", its a good little book, lightweight and it has about 4 hr's battery life. I actually ordered 2gigs of memory from Crucial for it when I bought it for like 30 bucks, so if you do look into them get the lowest memory and look into buying memory somewhere. My Mini only has a 16 SSD (helps battery life), but i just keep everything on my external harddrive if I need something

Thanks guys! I wouldn't even mind a refurbished if it cost less. I get Dell employee discount through my employer, which knocks 7% off the cost of a Dell.

Dell and Acer are the two I've looked at so far.

I use the paper ones.

I have a Sony Vaio P series. It rocks is super light weight and fits in my jacket pocket. Not to mention being a very well made computer.

Yeah you can get them through the Dell Outlet for $259 they have quite a few listed but then come and go on the list

I did alot of searching and as far as the battery life, the Dell with the SSD come out one of the highest at 4 hours

I have been considering buying one. And now as a result of this thread I just called Dell and ordered one.

Would you be able to save money if you used Quidco or a similar scheme?

I recently had to buy a laptop for a family member and managed to build up £35 or so that should be paid in a couple of months.

That's looks really nice - but out of my price range right now.

I received my Dell Mini 9 at 8:00am this morning from the Fed Ex man. I spent the day swapping the 8GB SSD (flash drive) for a 32 GB one and using the restore disks to format the drive. I tried to clone it using Acronis True Image software which would have taken 10 minutes if done right but I screwed it up somehow. Neither SSD worked after I attempted to clone. I probably mixed the two up and cloned the blank info on the wrong one. So I was forced to do it the hard way. The new 32GB SSD is from Runcore and writes much faster than the original. I also installed 2 GB of RAM which is evidently the maximum that windows (or was it XD) can recognize. I had to reconfigure everything and then make it see my wireless router and wireless printer and etc. Now that I have spent the day setting it up my brain wants a rest. It's not much of a brain.

Sounds like it's doing a fine job to me. :)

What flava of windows is installed on it? I recently had a nightmare with an old version of acronis (9 ) and vista - it installed but wouldn't work and completely killed the laptop when uninstalled.

I had to nuke and pave in the end just to get a laptop that could boot. :tears:

This has Windows XP Home. Some people are loading Vista on them. I am used to Vista. I have been using my wife's laptop with Vista for a while now. My desktop PC has XP but needs some work, including a new power button. I think that I will stick with laptops from now on as I got spoiled by my wife's and may just give my desktop to my son. I think that I can get by with this netbook. I don't do any heavy stuff.

I'm enjoying this net book so much that I just have to bump up this thread one more time to say that if anyone just wants to just go on the internet and email and simple things like that, if your not a gamer or run heavy programs, these net books work just fine and there are many that have 160GB hard drives in them for $299. If you are considering buying a computer and don't need a real good processor because you just do light stuff these are much less expensive than a real laptop. They don't have room for an optical drive in them, but you can use an external drive if you need one for something.:)
