    My first corn !!!!
Well while on vacation in Florida my uncle gave me a corn snake as a gift, it's a wildcaught normal that he's had for 8 months, he got it at 18", it's now 3.5', and eats 3-4 hoppers bi-weekly, it is pretty docile, doesn't like being taken out of his/her tub but once it's out it doesn't mind handeling... I really like it alot, has a nice character, when I get back to NY I have a 10 gallon waiting with an UTH, and cypress mulch, I still need a hide, thermometer, climbing branch, screen locks, and water dish... All that plus maybe a 60w heat lamp (already have but if all he needs is the UTH I should be good) all that should do the job, right ???

I have some pics on my iPhone but no means to post, if somebody wouldn't mind posting the pics for me please post or PM your email so I can share this beautiful normal with all of you ! Thanx in advance !

Congrats! Corns are awesome snakes. Just a few suggestions, tho:

No 10g!! The smallest tank for an adult corn would be a 20gal long! They don't require much space, but the home should be as long as at least half the length of the snake!

Make sure you get a VERY secure lid!! Corns are master escape artists.

I wouldn't go with cypress for a corn. They don't need more than 40% humidity and they burrow a lot (cypress can have sharp as well as fine irritating particles). Aspen is best for them.

Corns do only need one UTH for heat, since their temps are about 10deg lower on each side than BPs (ie 80s warm, 70s cool) but make sure you've got a good t-stat. Lamps aren't necessary, but if you want one make sure the bulb is low watt.

Enjoy your new snaky friend and get some pics posted ASAP! :)

    Re: My first corn !!!!
well I would say that the 10 gallon is about half it legnth, maybe a bit smaller, I wouldn't keep him in that for too long, my ball python is going to be getting a new enclosure soon enough, so the corn is getting a hand-me-down, if cypress isn't good than that's ok cuz I also have some repti-bark LOL, if you could help me out and pm me your email I'll send you the pics, if you could post them up for me... Thanks for the help !!!

    Re: My first corn !!!!
I would use aspen like argentra recommended, i never really cared for reptile bark. i keep my yellow anaconda on cypress mulch but thats only because she needs the humidity. i also keep a huge water bowl in her tank if she wants though. i wouldnt mind seeing some pictures, im looking to get me a second snake and im not sure on what i want, but im debating on corn/king/milk. there not my first choice but my first choice may not be available.

Somebody send me ur email so we can get these pix up !!!!!

Btw whats your 1st choice ? A hot ??? It all depends on what your looking for, a show piece, a handeling snake, or an exotic?

Show piece- chondro green tree python
Handeling- ball python or red tail boa, and most colubrids
    Exotic- albino monocle cobra

At least that's what I would pick

    Hi,

Since it is wild caught also remember the long strict quarantine and vet fecal checks etc.

No sense risking your other pets.:)

    Re: My first corn !!!!
Thanks Dr. Del, lucky for me I have a vet in the family in Florida that takes care of my uncles farm animals, and my uncle took care of it 8 months ago when he was caught, was kept alone for the last 8 months, his sheds have all been perfect, and defecates on time every time, he regurged once but it was after he ate the tub fell on it's side, can't blame the snake... But all seemed in order and stool sample checked out according to my 2nd cousin (the vet) so I'm pretty confident about introducing it to my room, should I be ok with that ?

Tonite I got bit for the first time ever by any one of my personal snakes... Interesting experience... Guess the corn was saving the dead mouse I went to pull out of the tank, cuz he killed it and dindnt touch it for a half hour, but once I'm holding it he strikes... Go figure

hm. I'm a corn lover borderline obsessive. I love my ball, but give me a corn over one anytime.

How about a nice pic of that checkered belly?

Aw, man. That's a gorgeous snake. Corn morphs are okay, but the normals are absolutely stunning. This one is no exception.

    Re: My first corn !!!!
yea, my original post, im looking for a rufous beaked snake, came across one but it was wc, and the colors werent what i was looking for. thats my first choice, my 2nd choice would be king/milk/corn. if i were to get any hot it would be a monacole cobra, im not a big albino person as i dont like the looks, but i dont feel like getting my venomous permit either so i wont be getting a hot anytime soon.
