Breeding Corns - Males

I was wondering if males have to be a certain size for breeding. I can't remember if I asked this question or not before. I have a hypo male that is about the width (no recent weigh in) of a standard marker and is about the same length (if not a few inches shorter) than my 300+g snow female. Should I bulk him up a bit more, or go ahead and pair them?

Well my first time breeding corns they were 18 months old and i cant remember how long they were.This breeding was not on purpose :oops:.I had no idea at the time they could breed that young :O.So if they are at least 18 months or older and healthy see if they want to get happy with one another :P

The female is 2 years old. ( late '06) The male is definitely over one year old. I've had him since this Fall, so he is around 18 months.

I know with ball pythons once a male is sexually mature then he can go any time (much like with humans and many other animals). Its probably the same in corns but you should definitely wait for a 100% positive answer.

If she looks healthy enough i would place them together and see if they can get some love in the air :cool:

Yeah, but that's aimed more towards females. Male corns are safe to breed earlier. However, in my experience, younger males seem to have more issues with infertility, but not always. But you guy sounds like he's good to go. People have successfully bred males as little as 100g and less than a year old.

I think I'll wait another month or two and weigh him and see how much he's plumped up, just in case. Thanks for the answers! :D With a hypoXsnow I'd get all normals that are het for hypo, amel, and something else that is on the tip of my tongue, right?

Snow = amel + anery

So, the babies from the hypo x snow cross would be het for hypo, amel, and anery. Unless you have an unknown het, you will not get any visual morph babies. However, unknown hets are pretty common in corn snakes (amel has been around since the 60s I think!), so don't be surprised if some amels or even one of the other morphs pop out.

When I purchased the hypo, the man didn't say anything about him being het for anything. Who knows. How many eggs to corns lay? I'm hoping to get my incubator ready in the next month. At what temperature do you incubate them?

Well depending on your girls weight and size it could range from 4 to 12(this is what mine laid) and they could double clutch also.My 1 snow girl triple clutched jusy from one set of breeding sessions so breeding corns can be interesting :P

She is 300+ grams and over 3ft long. She is around 2 years old. The male is about half her size. I'm going to wait a few months before pairing them. What do I need to do to prepare them?

Just feed them properly they will do the rest :P.One thing i will warn you ahead of time.When you place them together and they are both in the "mood" for love they will thrash around like they are killing one another.Relax this is normal :O:P.I freaked my first time breeding my corns as i thought they were killing one another :8:.

That sounds more like a bp range for clutch size. Corns are usually 10-25 eggs! Size has something to do with it, but it's not everything. I've had 500g girls give me 15 eggs, and I used to have this one female that was only ~400g, and she would consistently give me 22+ eggs for the first clutch, and 15+ for the 2nd.

I incubate them at 80º, pippies in ~60 days.

Well the clutches from my girls were while they were young and since i know longer have them thats the clutch sizes they had with me.I am sure they would give these higher counts now.

I was just pointing that I thought 4-12 seemed on the low side. Even 1st timers, if they're up to size and healthy and paired with a fertile male will give a decent sized clutch. I just didn't want the OP to be in shock if they were expecting 4-12, but then got 25!
