How do you make holes in sweater boxes...
Hi! I am wondering what the best way to make ventilation holes in the plastic sweater boxes is? Do you use a soldering iron, or do you drill the hole? If you drill, then what size/type drill bit do I get. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

A soldering iron would be the easiest, fastest way to do it without risking to crack the plastic like you would with a drill.

All I can tell you is that I screwed up a tub by using a drill.

With the force of my mind alone I focus a narrow beam and melt a perfect circle 1/8 of an inch in diameter. I can do this hundred or thousands of times in a row, so many many times have I done so.
Or I use a soldering iron.

Hmmm. A dremel at 30,000 rpms works like a champ for me. :D

I use a drill all the time and have never cracked a tub. You just need the right kind of bit. The flat wood spade bits work great. The ones with the point in the middle and the spikes on the outside.

I've heard people saying DO NOT USE A DRILL!!
But I have used them and never cracked a tub.
If you know how to use a drill properly then use it. It is by far the quickest and cleanest way. You just pick up the shavings after.

I've used a drill as well but you have to be careful not to leave any sharp curls of plastic on the inside of the tub. I like the soldering iron because it just melts the plastic and creates nothing sharp.
The fumes aren't real good for you so it's best done outdoors.
Re: How do you make holes in sweater boxes...
I've been using the tip of a hot gluegun. I'm sure a soldering iron works better but until I get one the gluegun gets the job done.

Run a razor blade over the holes on the inside of the tub and nothing jagged will be left. And no fumes.

I have a drill, but I don't have a soldering iron. That's why I asked. I was hoping I could just drill, instead of going out and buying a soldering iron. I'll buy one of those drill bits, it's probably cheaper than a soldering iron. I don't like the fumes, either and I can't really do this outside. I could probably file and sand any rough edges, I have fine and small files. Sandpaper too. I've drilled hard plastic lots of times, just never this soft stuff they make the sweater boxes out of. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your replies, they were really helpful.

A ten dollar straight soldering iron from wal-mart does the trick. once it is heated you can fly through the job. as the plastic cools it shrinks a bit smoothing out all holes. I'd have to say by far the easiest way. like a hot knife through butter:gj:
