Decided on Nolvasan...A few questions?

Okay, so I decided to use Nolvasan for my spot cleaning. I went to the tractor supply store and picked up :http://www.drugs.com/vet/nolvasan-s.html this was all they had (FYI: it was like $18 for a Pint). It is Nolvasan S, Chlorhexidine discetate, scented disinfectant, active ingredient: 1,1'-Hexamethylenebis [5-(p-chlorophenyl) biguanide] 2%.....Other inactive ingredients:98%. Can someone tell me if this is the Nolvasan that everyone uses? And if the ratio to cut it is: 1oz. Nolvasan to 1 gal. water? Thanks for the help!!!

You can use Nolvasan-S to disenfect everything but it should never be used on the animal itself. The "S", to the best of my knowledge means "scented". That's the only difference between Nolvasan and Nolvasan-S.

If you don't already know you use it in very small quantities (mixed with water). I have several hundred snakes and I use nolvasan daily and the gallon jug lasts me a very long time (upwards of a year).

That's the stuff! I use it in all of our enclosures and it works great. Thne dillution you have is right (1oz to 1 gal of water) it should be a very pale green by the time it's mixed instead of that deep blue it comes in as.....

1.) The generic brand of Nolvasan is Chlorhexidine
2.) The S in Nolvasan S means it's scented
3.) I spent way too much

Now:
1.) Will the smell bother my BP's?
2.) What is the difference between Chlorhexidine diacetate and chlorhexidine gluconate
3.) Is the stuff I have the same as the stuff pro exotics sells?

#1 - The smell doesn't seem to bother my animals but I always let things dry before putting them back in their enclosure.
#2 - Chlorohexidine gluconate is the active ingredient in many brands of mouthwash. Chlorohexidine diacetate is and antibacterial/antiviral. But to me that's confusing. The research I have done seems to indicate that they are both antibacterial/viral but the gluconates are typically indicated for use when being used internally or orally. Every time I start to get too deep into trying to figure them out I start having flashbacks to my organic chemistry classes from my college days and my wife finds me sitting in a corner rocking back and forth muttering under my breath. ;)
#3 - I can't say for sure if the stuff proexotics is selling is the same stuff I buy. I have researched this topic more than once and I consistently find conflicting information. Chlorhexidine is regularly used for treating wounds and is even used in mouthwash. But I know that the Nolvasan bottle is VERY specific to say that it should not be used around animals. Other products sold under the Nolvasan name are specifically intended for internal use. Just search 'nolvasan' on the vetamerica.com web site and you'll see what I mean.

It's not a complete answer but I would tell you to err on the side of caution and do what the label on the bottle says. The Nolvasan and Nolvasan-S products go out of their way to stress no animal contact. If the guys at proexotics are using a different formula I am guessing it is either a lesser concentration or is mixed with some other chemical that stabilizes it. But, I'm not a chemist, I'm a ball python breeder. Take that with a grain of salt.

The stuff you have right now ...don't use it on your animals. It's what the label says.

All around the Chlorhexidine diacetate just sounds like bad news to me. The label says: Don't get it on your skin, don't breath it and don't get it in your mouth or eyes. With the Gluconate the mouth and skin are fine, so I would imagine to breath it in is fine too. I am going the safe way and ordering chlorhexidine gluconate from petamerica and taking the Nolvasan back to Tractor Supply. I just wanted soemthing other then the vinegar mixture I have been using. I don't want to take the chance on using
Chlorhexidine diacetate and something bad happen to me or my animals. I don't have any disease outbreaks here or anything I just wanted a better spot cleaner. I think the chlorhexidine gluconate is the safe way to go and i will use my bleach mixture for a complete cleaning like I always do. Thanks for all the info!!!
