corns and bps in the same rack?
I have read that corns are much more forgving with temps. Would they thrive in a rack set to ball python temps? Hot side 92 cool side 80. If I do get a corn I would like to keep it on the same thermostat as my ball pythons.
Thanks!
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
That would probably be too hot for them. Most people shoot for 70-75F on the cool side and 80-85F on the hot side.
Some people say you should have an 88F basking spot but having an entire hotside of 90F might not be good. And a cool side of 80F definitely won't allow for proper thermoregulating.
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
Alright thanks for the info! I have an extra thermostat so I should be able to accommodate :D It would just be easier to have everything at the same temp.
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
Ive been keeping mine in the same rack for years now,no ill affects they do seem to stay on the cooler side than the bps
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
I use the bottom shelfs in my racks for the colubrids. They generally stay much cooler, probably 7-8 degrees cooler. Which is too cool to use for Ball Pythons; however, it does allow for proper thermoregulation for certain species of colubrids . :)

Do you just put them on the bottom shelf because it is cooler? Or do you set the temp lower?

The closer to the ground, the cooler the temperatures. Especially on old, hardwood floors. :) Remember, heat rises.
So, there is no need to set the thermostat lower.

Thats what I thought :D Thanks for the info!

I would not place them in the same rack setup as ball pythons period. They both have seperate humidity levels that they need also. They can forgive higher heat for only so long ;)
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
I would only put them in the same rack, if you can control their shelves separately. Bps and corns have different temperature requirements, and keeping corns at 80-90 wouldn't be good. If you have the extra t-stat, then hook it up and give each species the proper temps.

I think that seems to be the general consensus. Thanks for the input!

I can change the humidity of individual tubs in a rack setup. Why would it matter it they were in the same ran as bps? I will put them on a seperate thermostat

Well if they are in "ball python" heat ranges then it will in turn make the humidity levels higher.

Well yes but if they were on a different thermostat then it wouldn't matter. :P
I think I have my answer though. Not the answer I was hoping for, but I can manage that. I won't be getting a corn until summer though.

I was going off the original heat levels :P.I found out if you try to save a penny your snakes might suffer.I am not saying to buy high dollar stuff though, just sharing my experiances :P
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
You could drill more holes in the corn's tub to lower the humidity. With all the tools you have keeping them on the same rack seems perfectly doable. Just make sure their needs are met. :gj:
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
I keep my corns in the same rack as my BPs. Right now they are on the lower two shelves and have no heating, the room is set for low 80s.
But previously, I had the corns hot spot on the same thermostat as the BPs cool end. That gave them a range of 78 - 82.... worked out well. I will probably do that again (soon).
If you have a thermostat that controls your cool end, you can use it as the corn's hot end and just leave the other side as unheated. Just check your temps and see what you come up with in the end.

An excellent option!! I just think the biggest concern most of us have is keeping a corn at 82-92...
Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
I agree. Keeping a corn at 92 is just not such a good idea. It would be like habitually keeping a BP at 100... or higher.

Re: corns and bps in the same rack?
I think I finally figured this out. Please let me know if I cannot do this.
So I was thinking I could just get a piggyback light dimmer for each shelf of the rack that a corn would be on. Then just dial it down until I get into the cornsnake hot spot range. That way I can still plug it into the same thermostat and not have to worry about extra wires all over the place.
Sound like a good plan? I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. It is such a simple solution!
