    Ice storm casualties
So last week we had a big ice storm come through our area. When I found out I decided to move our tw snakes to my sisters house since she lives in town and is less likely to lose power than me in the country. Well they ended up losing power too and thanks to all the ice i couldnt get my car out to go check them till friday. So when I got there I was about 4 days to late and now have no snakes. I really hate the weather.

:O man I be pissed and upset.

I know if we lose power here I got a sleeping bag that all the snakes are gonigo into and( ormy snake caughting bag for callls 0ansd the truck will be i nthe driveway running tro keep them warm. I hell i might even park it clsoe to the house and run a pip( heater core setup to the room ) with and cord/inversterto provid limited heat to the trailer.

OR worst case I take them all to the fire house and sit in one office with them .. ( and watch as everyone lese freaks out at the sight of slim ..

My heart goes out to you. I have quite a few of those warm-hands things for the snakes when it gets cold. I couldn't imagine losing my snakes. -Hugs.-

Sorry for your loss but this was IMO preventable. I also was hit with that same storm as I'm located in Southern Indiana. Are local news was talking about this storm 3-4 days before it came which gives plenty of time to plan for this situation. Obviously you tried to do something by taking them where you thought all would be well but that didn't work out. When I herd about the possibility of heavy ice I went to wal-mart and got a box of heat packs as this was the only way I could think to keep my snakes warm with out a generator. I only have seven snakes so I figured the pack would work in a worst case scenario. Fortunately, I didn't lose power but I was fully prepared in case I did. Now if I had a room full of snakes I would just buy an emergency generator just in case something were to ever happen because a generator is far cheaper than the loss of a collection. I'm not trying to pick on you I'm just trying to state that it might have been preventable. --Josh

Where I live we rarely get snow or ice but when we do its always bad. And the first thing to my mind is a power outage so I made emergancy kits for my snakes. I bought some of those cheap styrofoam coolers, extra bags, and plenty of heat packs.

That so sucks!!! I am sorry for your loss... I am going to go out and get some heat packs just in case. I live in TX so an ice storm like that just aint gonna happen but we can loose power just the same in cold weather.

Yeah I probaly should have had something better than just taking them to someone elses house but thats what i did. Maybe next winter if this happens again i will try the hand warmer thing. That honestly never crossed my mind.

It's easy to think of what you could have done after the fact. You DID try to keep them safe. I hope you won't beat yourself up over it.

We are all human and even when we think we have everything covered to the max things can still happen.

Hand warmers are a great way to keep your snakes warm when the power goes out :) I always keep some around just in case. I had to use them once when the power went out at my apartment for 12 hours (also because of an ice storm) and they worked wonderfully. Just make sure you put them inside of a sock or something because they can get a little hot...I did that just to be safe :P

I guess if you have the money then a generator would be the best...but for us poor folks hand warmers and socks are an excellent alternative in my humble opinion.

Sorry for your loss though :( I would be so upset if that happened to me

we are lucky up here but we still have outtages and we got a generator, but i still keep those heatpacks around because that generator just might not start or if you can get gas.

Well hopefully we will get another one soon. This time i think i will make a backup kit as i have just found that the area i live in experinces power outages like this frequently in the country.

That's horrible that it happened, and of course it's always easy to look back and say "Well, should've, could've".
I'm glad you posted, so that maybe some good could come, with maybe a emergency sticky, to help others avoid the same thing.
People can order the real heatpacks, like the 60 hour ones, and use those with coolers to contain the warm and snakes too. Just be sure any cooler(styro or other) is not airtight.

I too live in the boonies and electricity is often out for no reason at all. I recently purchased a propane indoor heater called "Mr Heater". I would recommend it incase of future power outage.

Sorry to hear of your loss... :(

Here's something else that can be done in emergency situations that doesn't require going to the store and buying anything. It sucks that it doesn't help get your pets back, but it may help someone in the future...

If the power goes out and you need to keep the snakes warm, fill some 20oz bottles with hot water and some with warm to room temp water. Line the bottom of a cooler with the hot bottles on one side, the cooler bottles on the other. Put a towel over the bottles, and put your snake in there. You may have to pull out the hot water bottles every few hours and refill with fresh hot water, but it's something cheap and easy that anyone can do without having to leave the house...
