    Finished! Custom ball python cages
Put the finishing touches on tonight, and moved the snakes in. A 6-year-old male on the bottom, a 2-year-old female on the top.

Yes, ball pythons like to climb. Yes, even the females will climb. No one ever believes me when I say that, yet it's the first thing Adalae did when she got in there. She's so predictable... That's why I worried so much about them being stretchy and having some give to them.

And that's all she wrote! I've asked my dad to do a quick write-up of how to make them. I don't know if he'll ever get to it, though. He always has a list of 120 things that need to be done first. And no, that list never seems to get any smaller. -lol-

Probably a dumb question, but where do you get all the greenery, plants, etc. that you have in your cage?

And seriously, where can a person get a decent branch for their cage that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

    Thanks,

Beautiful cages, Mindibun...............I have a male and fele I keep in the same cage (albeit a Vision cage, which I detest greatly), but own it because they DOI like to climb, and do abundantly after hours, when the red heat lights shine and all are asleep. I often awake to my large (4+ lb) female falling off the climbing twig, usually about 11 pm........they are wonderful climbers and I'm glad to see you mentioned that to other breeders/raisers of this species. It's important they have something to climb on if you're raising them as a) they'll live quite awhile >20 yrs with proper managements, b) it IS natural (they don't all live in a hole in the middle of the African desert, and c) it's their exercise, to move their bowels, remove skin during a shed, and d) it just makes sense. So forget those who say all they need is a shoebox and they're fine: these are the fools who are in it only to breed and make what little money they can from selling them..................they really dig the trees, male and female, given the chance. Cheers!

I'm sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, I just wanted to answer the questions I never got to. (I've been away for quite a while)

The dimensions are (roughly) 4' x 2' x 2' - each cage. So double that for the entire unit.

You can get branches from the wild. Just bake them in the oven to kill any parasites/bacteria/what have you, cut the bark off if you want, and put it in the cage. I have just posted the updated enclosures here:
    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...hreadid=111585
if you'd like to see, and plan to add climbing branches again if they enjoy the new set up.

This time, however, I will be bolting the branches into the side of the cage. Will make a tutorial once I start working on it. :)

The plants come from various pet stores in the area, though I've found the cheapest to be Pet Supermarket. I actually like them the least of all the chain stores but they have plants for $2 - and you can't beat that with a stick. I also go to Michaels when they are having sales on fake plants, and Walmart from time to time. Thrift stores will sometimes have fake plants though it's not very common and you'll want to santize them first. You never know where they were last...
