to much humidity in a tub?
so i had to put togther a new tub for my rescue last night. i put 24 holes down each side, and 8 in front and i am still having a high humdity problem. All my accurite says is High. I am afraid if i put more holes i will lose my temps, is this my only option? in my full enclosure humdity is about 55% - 60% and my other tub with my small snake is about 60%. any ideas?

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
is your substrate dry? sometimes i have that same problem after my bp has either tipped the water bowl over or has gone pee. if the substrates wet, you can just completely change it out and take a towel to wipe up the condensation. Also, is your water bowl on the hot side of the tub? I found out that if you move it to the cold side that it can help lower the humidity in the tub.

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
the bedding is dry, and the water bowl is at the far cool side, i guess i just need more vents around the water bowl?

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
I had the same problem, and ended up having to put a bunch of holes in the lid. And when I say a bunch, I'm talking the entire top full of holes about half inch apart. Maybe you can start by doing just half of the lid, on the cool side over the water bottle. :gj:

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
You could also use a smaller bowl :)

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Just try moving the water bowl around...I can manipulate the humidity based on where I put the water bowl for when they are shedding or for regular humidity.
Punching more holes is a good idea too, and you can always cover them with foil if you find you've punched too many

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Wow! I have like 12 holes in my tubs and have to spray a lot to keep the humidity up. I can't imagine even getting a reading at all with that many holes. You must live in a shower or something. :D

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Do you have another humidity gauge you can use to see what kind of a reading you get with a different one? If all else fails, you might want to try that... maybe yours isn't working anymore... :(

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
I did that, same reading. but i have gotten the humidity down to 71% how bad is that?

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Dang, too bad we cant put our problems together and get it right. I havent used any tubs before, and i set two up to make sure i can get it right first. i cant get mine high enough, im at 43% and 44%. and the 44 is in a tub with no holes or water dish just news paper. the other is set with 14 holes a dish much larger than yours and a hide. This stuff is a mess.

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
That's not bad, though it is still slightly on the high side. If you can try to get it down even further, like maybe 60% for ambient, it would be better. You'll also have less bacteria build up. The higher humidity with the required BP temps just create a breeding ground for it. :(

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Are you using a rack? If so, it looks like you are measuring the humidity on the cold side of the tub... condensation will build up there because that is where the cooler temps from the house meet the tub. The average humidity in the rest of the tub won't be that high.
IMHO, for ball pythons you don't need to worry about humidity in a rack. Keep it clean daily, use a properly sized water bowl, keep the water bowl fresh, and allow some ventilation and your humidity will be fine. If it gets too humid and you see condensation on the walls, clean it! this normally only will happen if water is spilled, the snake pees, or you don't have any ventilation holes.
In a rack, nothing is easier then plain old newspaper for the substrate. It does not increase the humidity. And, unless you dump out your aspen daily, newspaper IMHO is the healthiest, cleanest option for your ball pythons.

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
I didn't want to start a new thread because I'm having almost the same problem and my tub set-up looks exactly like what the OP has.
The humidity in my room is ~35% and when I put the lid on the tub it seems to go right up to ~80%. I'm using a layer of newspaper with some aspen as my substrate and it's dry. FWIW, I've had my snake for less than 48 hours. And it seems like I've read somewhere that humidity can spike early on and can settle down later. Don't know if that's true or not.
The first thing to try would be a smaller bowl and more holes in the lid?

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
Had the same problem, make a crap load of holes. You wont loose your temps, and if you start having problems, or need more humidity. Just cover a a few holes with duct tape. whala

Re: to much humidity in a tub?
I just got home with a smaller bowl and put some more holes in the lid, so we'll see how that goes.
