Saved this pic from a few years back...this boa was swallowing a rabbit and the teeth got caught on the rabbit as it was swallowing...swallowed his own head! First and only time I'd ever seen it happen.

Since Lampropeltis are cannibalistic, they have been recorded to start eating themselves, starting at their tail.

I imagine he just got hungry! I had a corn that smelled mouse on himself and started to bite himself...he quickly found out that it hurt!:D

That boa pic was wild, bet that was pretty crazy to watch. Not sure what my reaction would've been at the time.

now i gotta wonder, did that boa's mouth go back to regular size ? or did he look like bubba from forest gump forever ?

It went back to normal...it was just "off the hinges" since that pic was taken right after he got turned back right side out...

Wow... At least he wasn't really hurt, but I wonder what it's like to see your own throat

I'm pretty sure that black and white snake is dead at that point.

I had this happen with one of my Ball Pythons a week or so ago, and it happens sometimes when feeding live prey. Once the snake catches the rat/mouse, especially it the snake takes the rat head on, while he is constricting the prey the rat/mouse can puncture the inside of the mouth or esophagus and then the snake can swallow air and it fills up the throat area of the snake. Sometimes this goes down and heals itself, as mine did. Other times it will need to be treated with antibiotics, and in worst case scenarios, if everything else doesn't work, the snake might need to be put down, but this isn't normally the case.

P.S. This isn't my info, I am not that smart, I learned this from Tim Lane at Ballroom Pythons. It doesn't happen very often, but he had it happen to him once, so he was familiar with the condition.

Not unheard of for large boids to swallow their own jaws when the feeding response goes a bit overboard. Not pretty, but it happens. We've seen 2 in the last 3 years at the vet clinic I help out at. Not a pleasant experience, but the snake can be sedated and it's jaw realigned with no permanent damage.

In 18 years, never seen it. I've only delt with BPs but then again this IS Ball Pythons .net so let's make this exclusive ti BPs. Never seen it, never straved my animals but don't plan to prove this out. It just looks photoshopped if you want the truth.

I'm seriously having trouble wrapping my head around that one. How is it physically possible to get the top of your head into your own mouth? I dont see how, even with the ability to unhinge a jaw, this is possible considering you cant just turn your skull inside out. I'm not calling anyone a liar or anything; I just need someone to explain it to me please.

Which one?
I don't see anything that looks photoshopped in either of the pictures.. The first picture shows clear bloating in the lower part of the body and you can see where the tail of the snake is inside it's own body.

Not sure if the OP pic is real or not, but I do remember Kathy Love talking about cannibalism in corns and IIRC she posted a picture of an amel cornsnake she hatched out that did the exact thing and ate its tail. The snake died, but she took a picture of it in an "O" shape just like the OP.

I've read Chris Mattinson's Snakes and in that it said that a Milk Snake was recorded to start swallowing its own body and it died 2/3 of the way down.

So this doesn't have to be photoshopped.

so do they make it all the way down to a lower case "o" from the upper case "O" l"o"l !
