Thats what I thought they were... I thought they looked familiar

Dubias are my other colony....I think I will feed them all off since they are such slow breeders. I just wish the lobsters didn't climb :weirdface

I'm running out of vaseline :O

Id take slow breeders over lobsters any day, no point in having feeders that just climb up any part of the tank when you put them in there.

Dubia own! How many did you buy? I would own them over lobsters any day! Actually almost all roaches are better than lobsters, they stink and climb!

Yeah I agree! Though lobsters are horrible, I give them some credit. They do breed faster and are alot cheaper meaning more breeders to start off with. They fed my beardies so I cant say other than the climbing they were compleatly horrible.

I have hissers and love them. They are slow to reproduce and get large, but they grow faster than I thought they would. In terms of our various critters that eat them - leopard gecko gets smallish ones (vaseline around the top of her tank, too), box turtle will get some pre-killed in his bowl one day when I have more, blue tongue skink gets small to medium ones (vaseline around the top of her tank, too), pygmy hedgehog gets them handed to her live with tongs.

I saw a white one that had just shed its exoskeleton - very cool looking. Too bad I waited 2 hours to get the camera. By then, it was brown already!

    We have mealworms, too.

Insect feeders are more fun than I ever thought they would be!

How big do Dubias get? Do they fly? Or are the adult wings "false wings"? I'm not even sure I can handle fluttering. Getting hissers was already a stretch since I'm roach-phobic. But I've made a lot of progress.

they get decently sized, but not huge. They do not fly unless you buy from Pat longs stock. The Nymphs look like giant Roley Polly's to me. Not climbing is my biggest reason why I like them because then I can just stick them into a cup for the beardies to eat.

Just the look of wings might freak me out though. Somehow I can convince myself that hissers are pets in a way.:D

I wouldn't worry about the big wings, only the males have them and you dont need many of those! PS everytime I go to this thread you Avatar changes!

Matt I dont know squat about Dubias, So the one different looking one in the pic is the male? Is that wings on him? They cant climb up tubs? How are they nutritionally? What is a set up like? Temps?

It's gonna take alot for my wife to go for the roach thing, I need ammunition;)

Males have wings, females dont, the females are shiny looking. No dubia can not climb smooth surface's. They do best in hot humid climate about 90F with 50+ humidity but they can live in 70F weather just fine just breed slower.

I'm so sad that roaches are banned in Ontario. I would keep a coloney or two as crickets are expensive and loud.

Just because they are banned doesnt mean you cant find someone with them.
