Soooo RI, I screwed up.
I received a 3100 Gra female that appeared healthy, and I only kept here in quarantine a week, I then house her with my Lesser to see if he'd mate....510Grams.
Well I found 1 mite in the cage (never had mites before so it caught me off guard, I cleaned the cage with Permethrin, and housed them
in my vision cage for a few days, 6 actually(was empty and clean). Well I work graveyard 6pm till 7am, and was working 6 days straight. I placed both snakes back in their original cages.
Well Friday mid Day I noticed the lesser has a little click when breathing and the female had a few bubbles. I upped the temps to 95 on High Side. Hoping thing will be ok, today Both of them are bubbling and have a repiratory infection.
The really bad part was Friday I called both Local Vets here to get Baytril or a visit, neither are herp vets, and they havent a clue about reptiles. I was gunna pay for office Visit, but Im thinkin I gotta go outta town to Lancaster, Los Angeles, Bakersfield or sumthin But I work monday, through thursday 13 hour days, dayshift.
How on Earth do I get Baytril...I know thats what they need, turns out the visiob cage temps were mid to low 70's at night(drafty cold window behind it.....my fault I know), temps were low 80's during daytime. ...... yeah i have 30 ball pythons and this was my first real screw up......wish Baytril was easy to get. I will be makin calls, maybe even takin Monday off......
I love my Ball Pythons.....Sigh.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
Update...
Seeing that this was a Hot Topic I figure I'll update.
My femle still appears sick, but no bubbles and improving. I removed the water Bowl to drop Humidity, maybe its helping.
My Lesser is showing No signs of RI, Nevertheless i called in to work tonight to take my snakes to a VET. I will keep you all updated.
Other than this ive had many locks this week, so Some things are going good.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
I picked up a boa once and the mites didn't show up for a while. Used prevent a mite on the substrate and never had a reinfestation.
I took the snakes out and sprayed the heck out of the cage. Waited about 30 minutes then reinstalled the snakes. The mites on the snakes died quickly. After about a week i resprayed just in case but never saw mites again.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
Up the humidity temporarily.
Make sure theres not a piece of stuck shed on her nostril, that's what caused my boa to make a popping noise that I was sure was an RI.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
So the deal is I just got a quote from the vet (not a herp vet....sigh)to see both snakes is 145$ and that doesnt count meds or anything extra. Good thing I have money saved up....I actually skipped the Pomona show wich I really wanted to go to just to get these snakes taken care of.......Off I go for 9:15 Appointment

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
Good luck and let us know how they are doing and what the vet says.
Remember to practice really strict QT by keeping them in a different room from your other snakes, no sharing of any tools, hand washing, do the healthy snakes first and then the sick ones, etc etc etc.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
Crank your heat up to high 90's even 100 on the hot side and bump up the humidity. DO NOT lower the humidity, that just masks the symptoms and will kill your snake.
Essentially you should be attempting to "cook" the RI out of your snake. Much like mammals gain a fever to fight infection.
Lowering humidity putting the snake in improper conditions... which is what caused your problem.

I'd also like to note that one week does not = QT. A GOOD QT is at least 60 days, 90 would be better.
Good luck with these guys.

I would not ever keep my ball pythons at 100F; that's too hot in my opinion :)

100! thats way too hot
95 tops is all i would ever go and up the humidity it will loosen the mucus.
what caused to original problem was more than just one mistake.
baytril isnt hard to find almost every vet has it and most vets should be able to figure out RI even if they are not herp vets.
as for the mites you better get some proventamite asap and i would use it on all your caging. i have never had mites yet i always have PAM on hand and use it monthly just in case.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
The vet just needs to do a mucous swab to determine which antibiotic is appropriate to use :)
And yes, 100F is too high, I agree :gj:

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
Well I got Panacure, Baytril and 10 1cc syringes for 260$....price to pay for not being near a Herp vet. But I would pay Double if thats what it took.
Turns out they have Pneumonia, one of them has practically no signs of it anymore. Ive got all my newer snakes in my living room, and my Originals in My bedroom. I did however screw up by putting my lesser with these Newer girls....wich was not a good idea. And I really couldnt quarantine any beter because Ive bought a new snake every other week for 3 months....lol so ALL of my newer ones are in living room. However My lesser I should have left him away from the newer Balls. Anyways .......... Time to treat em with Baytril. Time will tell........thanks for the advice on the Humidiy......I have the temps up mid 90's , I'll bump the humidity up a tad....:snake:

while we understand that its hard to QT everything away from everything (new and old). i QT in another room and ive had a rack at a time full of animals in QT the point to remember is if you had one animal in QT for lets say 2 months and you bring another home into QT. i personally keep both of them in there for the hole time i QT for even though one has been in there 2 months already. some ppl just put tubs here and there all throughout the house some ppl cant.

Re: Soooo RI, I screwed up.
I forgot to update this thread....
I built a rack with 18 32 quart tubs strictly for quarantine and 6 6 qt tubs.
I have it controlled with a Thermostat and 17" flexwatt, all is good. And that rack is full, building another.
