Caught in the Act!! - Balls Escaping!
    Hi All

First up let me wish you all a great New Year, and all the best for 2009!

Right then. The missus and I were out for New Years last night and we had a blast:D:D

Gothome at about 2.15am this morning and as usual I just popped a quick look to make sure all was well with my Balls.

I noticed immediately that Delilah's glass window on her cage was open ever so slightly, I straight away had a closer look at her hides, and yup, as sure as water is wet, she was not here!!:taz: So after a bit of cursing and what have you and started to scout the room for her.

Luckily my partner just spotted this little tail disappear behind a desk and when I pulled the desk out this is what I saw

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...d929_x_620.jpg

What a girl! Getting all tied up on new years eve, guess she wanted to have a party of her own.:D

Now I remember closing her glass door before going out, but I guess it must have just been open enough for her to get her snoopy snout in there and force the glass open more. She definately knows there is a weak spot there cause after I put her back in her cage she immediately went bacl to the same spot where she escaped, no doubt looking to escape again...

Anyone out there got pics or stories of their balls getting out, share them with us here:gj:

And, I only see like three, maybe four cords. It just looks busy because the excess is wound up and tied right there :P

Could be, she's smart little one there:D

No risk of fire hazard there so no worries, just an extension lead wound up with 3 of points coming from it. Lateralus hit it on the head.... and my blood was actually running cold the second I saw her window open..... but then it went to hot cause she was not too happy of my finding her, and I did not fancy getting a nip.....

    He He, yeah:P

I actually got a bit :taz: when I saw her curled round the cord, if I tried to pick her up she just tightened her grip, I did not persist with this as I did not want to hurt her.

Here in South Africa we have a saying, " 'n boer maak a plan", which basically means that "we make a plan". So I tried just gently tickling her tail and getting her move forward bit by bit. Actually worked quite well as she just cruised out of that tangle within a few minutes.....

She then gave me the look...:tears:... as I put her back to bed.....

they do get a bit miffed when you put them back, don't they.
ours got out about a month ago.
She is in a tank with a screen lid and a few lid clips, also had some books sitting on the screen to keep her from lifting it. one day i woke up and as normal went to see her first thing. i called my husband and asked him if he had her out (i knew he didn't, just making sure) he said no, she's in her cage. I said no she's not and he came running in the room. after 30+min of looking for her all around the room we finaly found her in the undertank shelf coiled around some junk in there. we had to empty out most of the shelf to get her out. and when i went to put her back in her tank she kept sticking out her tail to grab the side of it. once we got her back in she started looking for another way out. but i put some bigger books on her lid.
i still catch her now and then looking for a way out
    silly little balls.

Haha, BPs have such funny personalities... my girl has gotten into more than her share of tight squeezes, and usually comes out covered in bruises and in a very bad mood. Once they decide to do something, it is nearly impossible to change their minds!

I would share, but I am lucky enough to have no escape stories. (With my BP, at least... we've had a feeder rat that was loose in the house for a week, then got loose again 2 days later and was found in my laundary basket. Poor thing.)

Ah, leave it to the snakes! Just when you are ALWAYS going to lift them up or get them out of a situation they ALWAYS tighten their grip - usually on what is the most inconvenient item around.

Well I haven't had any BP escapees yet but I did have one of my little snow corns get out on me. I must have just forgotten to push the tub all the way in when I was feeding them one night and when I checked on them the next morning the little bugger was long gone lol. I set up a couple pinky traps and a couple tape traps for him but no luck. Then like a week later I'm checking on the ball rack and I see this little white stripe along the side, so I pull the whole thing out and sure enough there he is! I don't know how he managed it but he got like 5 levels up in the rack and was just chilling there enjoying the warmth obviously lol.

Glad you found her BTW :gj:

Anyone out there got pics or stories of their balls getting out, share them with us here:

I have a great story on how I got my ball python on accident!! I have wanted a ball python or corn snake for years but my mom said no snakes and so I gave up hope and stopped researching! So I was selling some pet supplies I didn't need, at the local petstore then the owner called me to ask me to pick up my stuff as she was moving her store and so I did and a week later I walk in my room and there was a ball python slithering across the floor and apparently he excaped from the petstore and came home with me, so I called the petstore and she didn't answer so me and my mom drove down to the petstore to tell her and she was thrilled that it was me that found him and not someone else that hated snakes so I asked for a mouse to feed him with and she gave me a free mouse and man was he hungrey and I was so excited she was only going to sell him to me for $20 and so I bought him and that was amazing that my mom let me keep him as she is terrified of snakes but likes Monty as long as he doesn't excape!! But it's going to be eaten eventually anyway!
My escape story: years ago my Butler's Garter snake (no, we don't have a butler, that's the species name) escaped (it was a cruddy aquarium tank) through the top by the access flap. I saw a brownish tail behind something on a bookshelf and found it there (on the 3rd shelf:weirdface). Later on we got a better terrarium that actually was meant for keeping reptiles (and now it's being used to house Nephthys the KSB). So there's my story.

Re: Caught in the Act!! - Balls Escaping!
I have on allowed mine to roam the room befoer ( mainly when cleanign their cages) I had my bp and black rat decide that the laying insode the computer ( whiel it was running was a warm place to hide) one was between the hadrives and the other had flatten herslef between the cdrom and ( at the tiem ) cd burner) taking about flipped out . i had the side off cause a case fan had died. so I didn't think about but I spent 4 hours lookingin the room for them and I was taking a break had the pc playing music and was like what the heck it the only place I had not checked and there the 2 were all warm and happy in the case just a go happy. I turn the pc off and waited an hour before they realized it cooled down and leave before i put them back in the cages.lol

I also had another corn ( hachling ) that when I first got him got out the cage by shimming up the probe wire and under the tank lid. and with 3 adults, 2 kids and about 8 ( of moms) cats the snake went from end of the trailer to the other end only to go across mom feet as she got ready for bed to be found..

    lol nice

I got a good story, I had a female that got out of a glass tank once, searched my apartment and nothing, she was no where to be found so I figured she got outside somehow. 2 months later I was sitting watching TV and my dog(mini aussie) drops something at my feet to play fetch. I leaned down to get it, and it was the missing BP! She was balled up, hungry but otherwise fine. A month later my pastel got out, my dog did the same thing 2 days later, found him for me XD

Yeah I have 3 stories. First one was my male normal. I happened to come home from work one day and was sitting at my computer when Stuff starts falling off the tv. I turn the light on and wouldnt you know there was my boy just sitting there. He just stared at me and didnt move until he realized I saw him then he made a break for it. lol.

This story is the miracle one. I screwed up and while clening I left the door latch open on one of my females tanks. Well after cleaning I fed her so I didnt check on her for about 2 or 3 days. When I went to check on her she wasnt there of course. Well I was positive that she had gotten outside cus I sleep with my door open(just a screen door) and we all know thats not much of an obstacle for a snake. Well after searching for about a week I gave up. One night I was asleep and was awoke by a bottle breaking outside. At firs tI thought Stupid cat. But then I couldnt go back to sleep so I went outside for a smoke. Once outside I cleaned up the glass and noticed this fat Ball just sitting there staring at me. Of course I had to do a double take thinking to myself this surly couldn't be Amber. But it was and after almost two weeks outside I luckily found her safe and sound.

Last one was actually after our last get together at RAuls (west coast jungle) I came home and took out my little cinny. After slithering all over the place for a while she just stopped moving and sat on my chest while i watched tv. Well I was tired and forgot all about the little one and fell asleep. The next morning I knew i forgot about her and strted searching. After a few hours with no luck I gave up figuring she could not have gotten outta my room and would show up eventually. Well later that night she did. Some how she managed to get on top of my curtain rod and got stuck to one of those fly paper roll things. It was just a little bit on her face but she was ok and has since shed. Well those are my three and hopefully my last "escape stories" Hope you enjoy.

Awesome. We've trained our dogs to treat our BP's like our cats, just a gentle sniff and that is it. Seems though that your pooch like balls too, lukcy that you've got an extra pair of eyes and a super snout to help track down escapees!:gj:

Reminds me of the time my BP stuffed himself inside my little brother's toy pirate ship that doesn't come apart... haha I am so lucky I even got him out of there. He could've stayed in there for awhile, but I suppose I could've just put the ship into his cage until he got out of it or coaxed him out with a mouse. Now that I think of it, that's probably what I should've done..

Just two weeks ago I lost my corn snake. I wake my sister up at 9 am to tell her her snake is gone... we had Dutch family over for two weeks and we didn't want them or our parents to find out.
So when our parents leave the house to go for a walk around the neighborhood with the family, my sister and I tear up our house looking for the little beastie. After double checking my sister's room, I give up and just then my sister finds her, wrapped up under a binder, behind a box under a couch!

my George got out when I went on vacation, 3 days of not seeing me, he had to come out & look!! I was gone 2 weeks. My neighbor/friend who was watching my house & pets... called me frantically saying your snake is gone.

My cats were scared, stayed in the master bathroom the whole time. My friend had a search party while I was gone, all the other neighbors came over looking for George. When I got home, the next day I looked for him. FOUND him in my son's toy box all curled up, about to shed. he hissed at me at first, then was all happy I was home!

    Aaaaaaaaaaargh!!! She did it again!!:taz::taz::taz:

Yup that is right! Delilah did another sneaky and managed to escape once again. She has definitely got her escape route sussed out now and is hell bent on tasting freedom any opportunity she gets.

Turns out she figured that if she can get her nose wedged in the glass window she can nudge the glass door open. I've photographic proof which I post later. Up til now I've not been using the locking mechanism ( for past 6 months) to keep her cage secure ( my bad:rolleyes:) but that will change.

This time we discovered her just as she got out and found her behind her cage, again just by the tip of her tail. So her cage was pulled forward and she was retrieved..... again we got the look :tears::tears::tears:

I had Blackback get out of the original bin, and he was up on the shower curtain rod, pretending to be a amazon tree boa. The other escape was two hatchlings, out of another rubbermaid bin. I was awakened by the dogs barking and huffing for me to come to the living room. There I found a baby unconcerned about the dogs, crawling happily across the floor. She was returned to the bin. The next night, my old english sheepdog suddenly lept up in the air. The other missing baby had crawled onto her head while she was sleeping. That one was also placed back in a bin. Now that I have the rack systems, there's no more escapes.

Trust me, she is not mentally damaged :rolleye2:, though she may be if she found the snake missing from it's enclosure. The St. Regis is a high end resort down the way in Dana Point.

One of the only things is my wife is afraid of reptiles & insects. She was a sweetheart as always in letting our son adopt a BP that needed a home. She won't touch the snake, but cares enough about teaching our boy about animals and to let us have reptiles is a big deal for her. In fact she is the one who suggested giving this BP a home.

She laughs that if it ever escapes she will be enjoying a massage, spa and dinner while we look for the escapee. This is her way of telling us... don't let it get out without us around, and perhaps make us look really hard cause I don't want to outlay that kinda cash!

Aaah ok, gotcha.... The way you posted about St Regis I kinda took it that your wife would have a nervous breakdown or something if the ball got out. :gj:

Be careful though, that is a nice make-good present that she'd get, make sure she don't do a sneaky and bump the cage so that the door opens.... ooops.... escaped ball python... St Regis here I come:banana:

Man's best friend to the rescue again, those sheepdogs are super, nice intelligent animals... some dogs will try and gobble up a ball on sight... they are like animated rope toys:rofl:
