WOW...good ole' petstore. You have a very pretty ball python but if it'sw a male it's worth $35-45. If it's a female $55-65 at the most. I will say again it is a very pretty normal but not nearly worth $250. You could have got a very nice pastel from a breeder for less than $250.

Aw... you felt the snake was worth the money. That's all that matters... He is very very pretty.
I'm a newbie to snakes so I tend to assign "value" to a snake by the way it looks and not by the what-kind-of-morph thing. For example, I don't like the look of albinos, so I would pay $800 bucks for a really nice spider (my favorite) head-wobble and all and won't be even tempted to shell out $250 bucks for an albino. Although, yeah, my money is limited, so I would go look for good deals as well which tend to prevent me from getting "suckered"...

I am really sorry man. You really do need to take that thing back to the shop and ask for either a $200 credit back, or a full refund. There is no doubt about it. Unless that thing is het for something (and that is just about impossible because certainly the shop would have told you) then they flat out ripped you off, and knew they were ripping you off.

When you do go back, they will likely try to tell you it is a pastel. It is NOT a pastel. Its not light enough, and it does not have the pastel green eyes.

That said, It is a beautiful normal, and what you do from here is up to you. Good luck!

Just for reference, this is a picture of one of my pastels. Notice the colour of the eyes. If it ain't got the eyes, it ain't a pastel.

Re: Need help to identify what kind of BP I had?
    Couple of points:

    1) It's not a Pastel

    2) You can get a Pastel for $100, and an exceptional one in the $200 range

    3) You do have a beautiful Normal with excetional color and pattern. Not worth $250 on the regular BP market, but if you are happy with your purchase, don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy your new BP. It's a real looker.

im sorry you were taken advantage of, you could have gotten a few normals for that price or even a couple pastels.

i would most def go back to the store and DEMAND to know why it was so much and get a credit or refund. i am actually very angry you were victim of the pet store salesman.:taz:

    Hi everyone,

Not to disencourage you I agree with your post but be very careful as the prices you listed are off WAY off...

I wouldn't pay a cent over 650 for any Albino (most are in the 500-600 range) I've yet to see any Albino going for 250 thats really cheap, and Spiders are currently going for no more than 300-350 (females) at the most.

He was saying he would be willing to pay that much for those snakes.

    He wasn't saying that's what they're worth.

What is the store that you got it from? so that others can be warned not to fall for their sales tricks to sucker new keepers into a cheat.

Re: Need help to identify what kind of BP I had?
I am confused... did the OP say the petstore sold him a morph?

Looks like they were simply over-charged for a normal without it being claimed as anything other than a normal.

The OP thought it was a pastel... that is buyer error, does not sound like the pet store did anything wrong. Pet stores in my area charge 200.00 for a normal corn. Doesn't make them thieves, it makes them a corporation (I know, same thing right?).

Petstores overcharge for BPs all the time. That is what they do. This is not new.

Regardless, it is a gorgeous BP, no doubt about it. If female, it would be my first choice to pair with a pastel. :)

What exactly did they do to you? Maybe clear that up.

I am reading that you thought it was something, but did THEY tell it was something that it was not?

Yep, exactly my point. Thanks Soterios.

The reptile store a few miles down is selling a baby female albino for $750, a male pastel for $250, and a male mojave for $400. I know we could get those bp's cheaper from a breeder because we got a normal male western hognose from the same store for $140 which is priced at $50-$75 from a breeder.

Yea THEY did tell me that she was a Pastel in the first place. Maybe I ask for some compensation for another purchase and keep her. After all she is still a nice little one.. :)

I think sometimes people that have minimal knowledge of any area misuse words all the time.

Perhaps the employee used pastel as an adjective? As in this is a nice pastel (colored) snake.

I guess I just am not sure why you posted a pic asking what kind of snake it was vs introducing your new pastel (if you were sold a pastel and believed that is what you had bought)? I hate to err on the side of any petstore, but just seems that the tone of the thread changed pretty quickly to you being ripped off, vs. you simply overpaying for something on the assumption it was something else.

Hey Bruce, I really appreciated your opinions and is just that the geographic location where I have limited access to live stock for comparison unlike in the State and other part of the world. Joining this forum and understand from reading and asking is the only way help me to understand better on this magnificent creator. I do like the snake in the first place without knowing what breed it is but just BP and I bought it.

As I start reading more from various links and understand better I start questioning if the seller was “ripping or “overpaying” so I posted the pics and asked. Thats right she is female, maybe I should consider her pairing her up? Now I need to be careful in selecting the right breed male to get for the expected offspring result.. Time to do some study and reading what ??? + Normal= ??
    ;)

If you have limited access to BP's where you are (not sure what part of the world you are in), then $250 may not have been an outrageous price to pay - it's supply and demand. Ball pythons are more in Europe and may be even more in other parts of the world.

I'm still unclear if the store sold her to you AS a pastel though? Because Bruce is right, it doesn't make sense you'd buy what you thought was a pastel then ask what yours is.

I did a little study before the purchased and thought it was pastel base on the store info and my limited knowledge. I tried to distinguish looking at pictures and reading from the web but I still have doubt about it. Maybe is my English that is causing the confusion here. :)

that is a very pretty ball, nice bright colors, i'm sure at breeding size many people starting out wouldn't be shy to breed him/her? with some sort of morph into a nice start, perhaps a pastel, spiders, etc to achieve an even more spectacular snake :). what would make this snake a true pastel (which i am assuming is what you had in mind to question) would be more of a fade in the center the darker spots? other explanations for him why this isn't a true pastel ball?
