Help! Too high humidity!

As some of you may have read in my last post, I just moved my girl to a 41 quart bin, mostly because her old cage was at a constant 40% humidity, and she's in shed, so I was really panicking. But I really like the bin. Holds heat well, too.

Now there is a problem. When I first put her in, I sprayed the bin so it was up to 70%. BIG mistake!! It kept going up and up into the 80%s, and then my digital thermometer/hygrometer said "HI", meaning it is above 89%. I will clean it out soon to make sure there was no mold growth or anything, but is this in any way harmful to her? I air it out every few hours or so until its down to 75%, but it shoots back up when I close it. I have two breathing holes on each side. As soon as she finishes this shed, I'm going to drill two more holes on the long sides.

Can too much humidity be harmful while a snake is in shed? Seriously, its bad in there. The sides of the bin are all foggy.

And I will NOT get a dehumidifyer! It is 35% in my house right now, which is bad enough.

too much humidity can increase the risk of RI, but I think that's over a long period of time rather than just a day or two of high humidity. Good luck on airing out the tub a bit more!

High humidity runs the risk of bacteria and mold of growing, i dont think you have to worry about RI. However mold/bacteria + stressed out snake, lower temps can usually help catch an RI. But if its just a day or two of high humidity you dont have anything to worry about. Maybe put a smaller water dish in there, or solder more holes in that tub. Good luck.

I would put a few more holes in your tub. You are lacking holes for sure.

actually now that i look at those pics again, i think its just the huge water dish, put in a smaller one , just big enough for the snake to take a drink and you should see the humidity where you want it. The holes you have are big enough to make me think that ventalation is not the problem.

If you make sure its clean, there is nuthin to worry about...They can tolerate high humidity pretty well....

I would want more holes in it. I use 5 millimeter drillbits on my tubs and I got alot of holes. A single line on the long sides and two lines on the short sides, this gets me to around 60% at all times.

As soon as she finishes getting her shed off (tonight, I'd guess, she started last night and quit, lazy girl), I'll go back to handling her daily and I'll leave it open while I handle her. I'll also drill more holes.

Actually, she is fairly large, 3'10", and her normal water bowl that she can fit in was too wide for this cage. I happened to have this smaller one on hand, and I will use it until I find a larger one. I like giving her room to soak because if I'm gone for a few days or something, I don't have to worry about her having a bad shed.

If your humidity is up to par there is really no need for her to soak! They only soak if humidity is inadequate or maybe mites etc.... It isnt something they would do under normal condition's when husbandry is spot on! Personally i think you have enough holes and big ones at that, so i doubt ventilation is your problem. Good luck.

I agree with everyone else about adding more holes. I have them about every inch in my rack on all four sides, and the humidity is perfect. Buy a soldering iron at walmart, they're like eight bucks, and make perfect holes in the tubs.

Also, small water bowls. Your snake doesn't need a soak unless something is wrong.

I suggest using a 5" water bowl, and adding holes to the tub. This should lower your humidity down to the correct range. Ball pythons do not need to soak in their water bowls.

I agree with everyone saying more holes. What I tend to do is put more holes than are needed and worst case scenario....you plug a few with duct tape. I basically raise and lower my humidity based on how many holes I plug and unplug.
