    Bought a new goat!
I bought a new goat today~ a little "genemaster" doe (3/4 boar, 1/4 kiko)~ I'm very excited about her! It's raining like crazy now so pics weren't really a priority but I'll get pics of her and show them off soon! Already named her~ "Betty" She is to keep our current Boar Doe "Butt Head" (if your looking for her~ look behind you......thats why she's named "Butt Head"~ thats where her head ALWAYS is!) Anyway~ Betty is to keep Butt Head company when I butcher the two evil mini's that live with Butt Head currently. I also bought Betty's sister~ but she won't come home for another couple week!

Very exciting time on the Homestead right now. I butchered our first goat this week and we had part of him for dinner last night~ he was delicious! I'm planning on butchering the two mini does soon~ maybe Friday if I can borrow a revolver from the neighbor on Friday. Butt Head has come into her first real season and is ready to be bred so I'll be taking her to the neighbors buck for some "service" ~ maybe on Friday when I try to borrow his revolver~ I just bought Betty ($65 for a goat thats going to eat weeds and provide me DINNER several times when I breed her!) AND there is an Auction this Friday and Saturday........Scott wants to go......so you KNOW I'll be coming home with something new!

    I'm LOVING be a homesteader!

I demand pictures of said new goat, Betty.

I will probably have goats one day but they will be strictly pets. :) Maybe a nubian or a pygmy. :)

do you have any lambs yet?? .... I know this sounds horrible but YUMMMMMM!!

    Re: Bought a new goat!
Nope~ no lambs. I'm not too keen on the whole wool thing~ especially as the pastures for the goats are mostly wooded and overgrown with brambles. Will be getting pigs soon though~ built the pig pen~ waiting on the breeder to wean the piglets!

    Oh~ and YUMMMMM???
Why would that sound horrible to me? This is a working homestead and I intend for the animals to begin paying for themselves within the year. I just lectured the Turkeys and ducks this morning that LAZY BIRDS that don't lay me eggs can always be added to the menu next week! (The turkeys and ducks are not laying right now because of the season~ but I keep hoping a threat will get back to work faster!........or~ maybe I just spend too much time by myself with my animals!)

Are you milking your goats? Or are you mainly keeping them as meat producers?

    Re: Bought a new goat!
Right now just as meat~ but there is a farm about an hour from me that holds a class where they teach you how to milk a goat, then how to make goat cheese, ice cream and stuff out of it. Next class is Feb 7 and I'm planning to sign up for it!

What made you decide to take up homesteading? The economy?

    That is so exciting!!!

When we live full time at the ranch (16 months) we'll have Nubian does and a Nubian buck and a Boer buck. Boer's are great brush clearers and awesome meat goats. Nubian's are great milkers. They are both similar in build and musculature and so do well when bred together.

It is exciting to move toward greater self-sufficiency and less reliance on powers-that-be which are so out of our control.

I am very excited for you!!!!

    Re: Bought a new goat!
Always wanted to. Never thought it was really a possibility though~ Property is so expensive and jobs that pay well enough to buy property are rarely located within driving distance of any property worth trying to homestead on. Scott works IT and I gave up on having my own homestead/farm/ranch whatever you want to call it a long time ago. And then~ last year~ it just kind of all came together and here I am~ Having the most fun I've ever had.

Wish I could have starter when I was younger~ but I'll get there. Do you have any idea how satisfying it is to serve dinner and know it all came from your hard work?

    Re: Bought a new goat!
Homesteading is great. My goats are miniature milkers and we love it. We're expecting kids in February.

Serving breakfast or dinner that you just collected/harvested/butchered yourself from animals/crops you grew yourself . . . there is no better feeling of self-sufficient hard work.

    Good on ya!

I'd love to see a picture!

I've got 3 pygmy does (Valentine, Gidget & Lady Bug) and a pair of nubian twins that I couldn't bear to seperate. A doe and a wether (Lady & The Tramp). They're all just pets and I can't wait to get more.

What an awesome little farm you have! I always love seeing other people's critters.

We witnessed our Toulouse geese breeding today, here is hoping for some eggs soon. Got kids coming very soon as well. We are planning on getting turkeys and maybe a piglet soon.

    Yay for farms! :D

MY shoes have poop on them! LOL! It's amazing how much a little duck can poop~ I had to clip the muscovys wings to keep them in their pen cuz it looked like about 20 dogs relieved themselves against my garage door every morning!

New kids soon Epona? Congrats! My biggest boar girl at the nieghbors "visiting" their buck. Hopefully we'll be getting new kids from her in May~ maybe June!

my mom-in-law has goats. She only has 2 right now (Milda and Onyx). She had 5 til my fiancee's donkey killed them. He almost caught a case of high speed lead poinsoning.

Also, fainting goats started just south of me in Lewisburg, TN. They actually have a festival once a year.

NO BEES!!! I was thinking about it~ but this last Saturday~ we went to a class to learn to milk goats (the pic of my youngest boy milking a goat was there). THEY had Bee Hives. Cool. Didn't think much of it.........

    UNTIL...............

Driving home~ something was buzzing around me......didn't think much of it......a fly or something~ I was DRIVING so I didn't pay much attention.......

    Suddenly.........
My abdomen CAUGHT FIRE!!!! I SWEAR~ HAND TO GOD it felt like my abdomen had caught FIRE!!!!!!!

    I was DRIVING!!!!!!!!!

Amazing to me still~ I CALMLY told my son "Something is biting me" and pulled the van off the freeway before SCREAMING IN PAIN AND YANKING OFF MY SHIRT screaming "OH MY GOD WHAT IS IT!!!???!! GET IT OFF MEEEEE!!!!!!!!!" While my teenage son held one hand over his eyes (his mother was now mostly NAKED in the driver seat and screaming hysterically!) and tried to pear through his fingers to identify and find whatever was biting me!!

Turned out a bee had flown into the van~ then crawled into my shirt~ then chose to STING ME in the abdomen WHILE I WAS DRIVING!!!!!!!

I understand we NEED bees~ I understand they are a GOOD thing.......but we are going to have to wait for the swelling to go down...........and for my teenage son to stop staring at the floor every time he sees me~ before I'm willing to add them to my farm!!!!

    OUCH!!!!
I STILL can't believe I was able to calmly explain I was in pain and pull the van over before the OH MY GOD IT'S A BUG AND IT'S BITING MRE!!!!!!!! Dance started!
