I was wondering if somebody could post a pic of what this substrate looks like? This is defintely the substrate I am using for my breeding colony, just curious to what it looks like.

Re: equine fresh
This stuff works really well. It's all I ever use now.

Re: equine fresh
How much does equine fresh run? Where do you get it?

Re: equine fresh
I get a 40 lb bag for $6 from tractor supply. Get about 15-18 tub changes per bag.

Thanks, that’s great info. I just called my local feed store, and they carry another brand of the same stuff for $5.50 per 40 pound bag. Are you talking about 15 - 18 concrete mixing tubs? I will be using it in cat litter pans and concrete mixing tubs. I usually fill up about 18 or so cat litter pans and around 9 or 10 concrete mixing tubs per week. How many bags do you think I will be using each week? Thanks.

Re: equine fresh
how much do you put in each tub? just enough to cover the bottom?
-
Re: equine fresh
Approx 2 pints, it'll cover about 3/4's of the bottom with no overlapping pellets. It will expand and fill up the tub.

Connie,
What about cat litter pans for females that are about to lay or have very young babies? Do you mix pellets with pine, or whatever wood shavings you use? Or do you just use the pellets?

Re: equine fresh
I use 2 handfuls of shavings in those pans. My hands are very small, so it's not a ton of shavings. I really lay off the pellets in females tubs until the babies are almost 2 weeks old. Just because I can stretch the pellets farther that way, and some females really do love to build big nests.

Great thanks for the info. I think that I am really going to like the pellets. I plan to start using them within the next few weeks.

I know this is an old thread, but during search it is exactly what I'm wondering about. So, Connie does this mean you actually only cover about 3/4 of a concrete tub with the pellets? I bought my first bag last week to try out and it really seems like it holds down smell better, but I have deemed it "too expensive" until I read this post. I put WAY more than that in mine (to the tune of about 1" deep). If I am reading what you wrote correctly this could possibly be the alternative I'm looking for.

Re: equine fresh
I don't use equine fresh but use wood pellets and only put enough to cover the bottom, not like a thick layer or anything and with the moms I throw aspen shavings/shredded paper on 1/4 of the cage for their nest.

You got it, just a single layer. You must have had a LOT of wasted pellets if you were using a one inch thick layer! I just went through and fixed the links on the pictures, so hopefully that will make things a little clearer for you.

Re: equine fresh
Wow, thanks for that, and yes I did have alot of wasted pellets.

Re: equine fresh
We use it and like it better than shavings as it seems to perform better..
We also moisten it to start the breakdown process..Which is quick and easy in the warm months but takes longer in the cool ones..Extruded sawdust into pellets that carry several names depending on your part of the country and feed store..We barely cover the bottom of the mortar pans and mist with water and watch it swell..When we didn't moisten it we found ourselves throwing away whole pellets that never got a chance to pay for themselves..
2 more pennies..
