http://www.naturesafariindia.com/liger.html

Lets see what everyone thinks, that is one huge kitty. :O:O
Just so everyone understands its saying this animal is a Tiger and a lion offspring. So im not sure if its true what do you think?

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
I’d hate to find that in a dark alleyway!
-
Re: Liger? Real or fake???
I have actually seen ONE of those in person, but I don't think it was that big. I'm not a big fan of hybrids though.
-
Re: Liger? Real or fake???
They're real. They have been around for a number of years now. You're just catching on to these animals?
They do suffer from genetic defects if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
Yes, they are real.
A liger is actually a male lion and a female tiger - while they call a male tiger and a female lion a tigon.
Only the female ligers and tigons are fertile though.

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
I believe a liger is a cross between a male lion and female tiger. And there is also a Tigon which is a cross between a male tiger and female lion.

Kids watched it every day for about a week. It grows on you after awhile.

Yes and no. One of the crosses (can not recall which but I think it is the liger cross) results in an animal that can not regulate its growth. This is a result of inheritance of certain maternal factors. I am sure there is data on it somewhere

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
yup its true, I've seen liger cubs. my friend worked at a small zoo. she even got peed on by the clouded leopards lol
-
Re: Liger? Real or fake???
The local Zoo I used to work at here had one...
It was a big mean bastard lol...
Alot more agressive than the reg. tigers they had, but very impressive animal and always a crowd pleaser.

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
the first ones i ever heard of was a large cat keeper out west. and how they came to be there was poor husbandry(putting it politely). the people actually abandoned these large cats in the desert somewhere. the cats were actually left there to fend for themselves and in the mean time, trying to pass time...seems like they got a little bored, and made some ligers. they broke into and out of each others cages. this was like six years back or more. i saw it on one of those, most shocking or animal precinct, or something like that. it was sad. obviously people have made more. i own a hybrid of a smaller caliber, but i dont feel lions and tigers should mix. but since people are doing it already.... i would like to see an all white male lion, wth a huge white mane and tiger stripes. that would rock.

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
Yeah the Renaissance Fair in this area had a few like 10 years ago (maybe more than that) and you could take a picture with them... they're freakin adorable! I want one.... I'll just keep him in my backyard and make a rack system for him hahaha...

Yup. Ligers grow to extreme sizes because the growth inhibitor is passed to offspring by female lions and male tigers, so pure tigers get it and pure lions get it, but ligers(female tiger + male lion) apparently don't get it.
Tigons(female lion + male tiger) grow to "normal" adult large cat size(~500 lbs max?)
I don't really understand 100% how this works genetically, just what I've read.
"Hercules" is a Liger I think kept at a place in florida, and at just a few years old(3?) He broke 900 lbs, which is something like 150% the weight of an adult male lion. He was on Animal Planet a few weeks ago.
-
Re: Liger? Real or fake???
yeah, holy cow, they are so fat!
i don't understand why someone would breed an animal that has a defect that can potentially shorten it's life.
-
Re: Liger? Real or fake???
most of the time it's unintentional.. let the animals get to each other for an instant and bam.. baby liger.
Hybrid cats were originally produced in captivity long ago, certainly nothing recent.

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
There was an episode of "My super sweet 16" I saw a long time ago where the kid flew to a place in FL I believe and picked out a baby liger to borrow for his grand entrance...found out it was illegal in his state to have big cats not in cages and threw a hissy fit...kinda glad that spoiled brat finally didn't get something he wanted

Actually that's really rare for Ligers to be very aggressive. Like any of the "Giant" animals, they generally have a more gentle disposition. I'd much rather work with the bigger cats than the smaller any day. Small cats= vicious , because they have to be to survive in the wild.

I went to undergrad with a girl who went on to vet school.
She interned with a guy who worked with large cats.
He began working with large cats because after a number of years working with orangutans, he got fed up with just how dangerous the big males are :D
When an orang decides he wants to hurt/kill you, he knocks you down and rips off your kneecaps with his bare hands.. so he can take his time to go to work on you.

Haha maybe I should rephrase what I said. ANY exotic animal (or animal in general) can harm/kill you... small cat's just seem to want to harm/kill you more often:8:.
But I totally can understand why he'd want to move away from orangutans... that sounds painful...

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
If a liger was mean to you, you must not have any good skills. You know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Ligers only like people who have great skills. :rolleye2:

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
They had one at a small private zoo close by my hometown. I went to see it once. Then it mauled some people and they had to off it. :(

Re: Liger? Real or fake???
I saw a liger at a Renaissance fair a few years back. It actually was as big as the one in the picture; they made it do the same trick where it stands up towards a person on a platform. They are really impressive in person.
