    Looks like I am here!
Ok ... I just acquired a Boa he/she is shedding ... but I think it just maybe a red tailed it's hard to tell with the loose skin. In my intro post in the general python forums I mentioned he had been living under my cabinets in my kitchen ... he had no where to soak and no good place to rub up against. Now he had a nice water dish and a bark tunnel the combo should help him out :)

I do have a question ... we fed him chicken livers yesterday while we were trying to lure him out last night... How long should I wait before I offer him a mouse?! he is about 5ish feet...

    check out this caresheet:

    http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules/...warticle&id=13

and offer an appropriately sized rodent(at 5 foot probably a rat), ideally as thick as the thickest part of the snake, a little smaller is fine. I usually wait a week after re-homing a snake to let them acclimate before feeding, but if the snake is a wild rescue it might be underfed and appreciate some food before then.. Since you already fed it recently I'd wait a week.

a rat really!?!?! WOW!! AWESOME!!! ... Ok a few silly questions ... should I buy more than one frozen rat at a time?!? How long do they keep in the freezer?!? the thawing out and warming up part I am all studied up on :)

I am sorry for the strange questions I am just so excited to have been lucky enough to have him pick my house to hide out in LoL

buy more than one if you plan to keep him. frozen critters can last as long as 6 months if vacuum sealed.

LaFilleClochette, he was lucky enough that the snake found him, he didn't buy it.

I started off only getting one mouse at a time for feeding my BP when I first got her, mostly an excuse to visit the reptile shop more often just for fun :D

    Now I get 4 at a time.

    "a rat really!?!?! WOW!! AWESOME!!!"

Probably! Red tails are pretty girthy compared to some snakes like.. corn snakes for example. It's pretty standard practice for many snakes to feed once a week, and as I previously said to feed a prey item that is as thick as the thickest part of the snake. I just said rat because I'm assuming that a 5 foot boa is quite thicker than my 2008 ball python that is up to eating small adult mice.

I'm no expert on red tailed boas, but I hope that I'm helping you find some of the more basic info on them :D

Firefox is wonderful too. Most of the strange reptile-type people use it.

Tomorrow I will be adding the privacy wrap around the back and sides ... the pipe has no sharp edges and has been cleaned. there is a "log" (the half log tunnel type) on the side where the basking lamp is. I made a trip to a 2nd pet shop this evening after the pics and got a proper water bowl ... the first shop didn't have any large enough ... my well meaning hubby was just a little to excited to let me go out and get it before he added the snake to the tank.

We have a UTH (I hope that's the right abbr.) and 2 temp gauges. I will be getting a 3rd tomorrow for up high over the climbing branch.

I do have a few question ... I haven't found the dimmer things ... could anyone point me in the right direction for either the dimmers OR thermostats ... Or at least link me to a thread where I might find out more info?

Also, I am working on regulating the humidity. Any neat little tips??

If I had a bit more notice I would have some of these bugs worked out ... *sigh* :snake: Avy should have warned me he was coming. :snake:

    Beautiful and gorgeous Bci!!!!
Here's a link to Reptile Basics. Rich owns the business and he is a really great guy with very reliable and sturdy products and awesome customer service. He sells thermostats, cages, RHP's, flex, cages, racks, etc.
Here's the link to his thermostat page: http://www.reptilebasics.com/Thermostats-p-1-c-250.html.

I would not mess around with a dimmer at all-- go directly to a thermostat. :)

Re: Looks like I am here!
    As for humidity.

Add a deep bowl that can sit directly on top of the UTH. It will evaporate faster and create more humidity. Keep in mind this is separate from the drinking bowl that you should keep on the cool side. I use a cool whip container :D it's deep enough I can mostly bury it with bedding and have it sit directly on the UTH.

Also you can cover most of the top with foil to keep the humidity in.

    How big is your setup?

I keep my baby boa in a 40gal breeder (a little big but this way she has room to grow) and I need 3/4 foil lid, 3 waterbowls, a UTH and a CHE (ceramic heat emmitter) to keep the humidity and heat right.

    Keep us posted and welcome!

I did get a deeper bowl this evening ... tomorrow I will move it closer to the UTH ... the set up for now is a 50 gallon tank ... it's what I had and had space for ... in the next few weeks we will be rearranging the house a bit ... and probably will get the bigger tank out of storage. he/she is already about 5 feet long... I don't know how old he is.

There is so much to know, I am really trying to learn on the fly here...

she really is! I am glad she did to :) if she went to the house to the left or right ... she would have probably been killed :( I told some of the neighbors they all had the same comment ... "I know what kinda snake it woulda been in my house a dead one" It just makes me so sad to hear that! She didn't do anything wrong ... she just wanted a warm place with a little something to eat and drink! She would pop her head out to watch me cook dinner or do dishes ... I kinda miss seeing her in there LoL
