Whats your favorite substrate for racking systems? Just want to get some opinions, I'm thinking of changing mine.

Newspaper. I can just go into one of the dorms and get a stack of school papers for free. Hardly anybody reads it and there are always tons of extras so I don't feel too bad about it.

I use paper towels for my BP and RTB and aspen for my East african sand boa and western hognose. They like to burrow so it is more ideal for them. Although I do put papertowels underneath the apsen for my hognose because he won't burrow unless there is paper towels down too. He is a very strange snake indeed. I need to get some pics of what he does to his aspen if there is no paper towels. It's funny.

I'm using paper towels too, but its annoying. mine bunch up the paper towels, or get part of it in the water so that the entire enclosure gets soaked in a matter of minutes

I use mostly newspaper in my racks. I find that if I crumple up and extra piece and throw it in they are less likely to try to burrow.

I use newspaper in my racks, and in my BCI open-front enclosure. It is just easier to clean 100% this way!

I use aspen...but after reading this....I want to go to newspaper. Do you guys flatten it or crumple it??? And how many layers between the ball and the bottom of the bin?

I use brown packing paper. I bought a 30 foot by 30 inch roll for about $4 at Staples. I put down 2 layers and toss in a couple crumbled up scraps into the tubs. Works out pretty good. I like it better than newspaper.

I have thought about switching back to a loose substrate. My balls are pooping like clockwork (which is a good thing), but spot cleaning with bi-weekly full cleaning was easier.
