Sweet PDZ - for an odor-free feeder colony
Sounded like an advertisement for PDZ, huh...
http://www.sweetpdz.com/
I use it for my pet hamsters house. It really works. They sell it at the feed store 3 miles from my house. So, I read up on it a bit to see if they are reptile friendly and it looks like it is. So, I started using it in my feeder rat colony as well. It was $16 for a 25 lb bag that looks like it's going to last me 2 years! I only sprinkle a little amount before I put the substrate during cleaning day (which for my hamsters is weekly but for my ASF rats could go longer).

Awesome! im going to give this stuff a try. thank you
Re: Sweet PDZ - for an odor-free feeder colony
We tried a couple bags of this a while ago. It DOES work, but for the price you pay for it, you might as well just use Equine Fresh. It's $6 for a 40 pound bag, and works just as good for the odors. :gj:

Hardly any. I use it with all my rats and it just absorbs all the urine smell. As long as you change it once it starts to completely break down there's never any smell. I have them in my bedroom and you can't even tell I have rats in there from the smell.

I think Adam was talking about this equine stuff on his site. He said he gets his from a local feed store I think. I am going to give it a shot.
Re: Sweet PDZ - for an odor-free feeder colony
yeh Im going to give it a shot also, but first Im going to build a 20 tub rack for them this week.:D Found a place to buy bulk live for cheap so Im gonna order 150 mice/rats to start out with. Im excited about this.
Re: Sweet PDZ - for an odor-free feeder colony
In my humble opinion (from the measly standpoint of 2 bp's and several pet rodents), I believe the Sweet PDZ is just as cheap as the Equine Fresh.
They sell equine fresh at my local feed store as well. The difference is, equine fresh is used as a bedding whereas sweet pdz is just a sprinkle underneath your choice of beddings. In my 58 qt rubbermaid tub that houses my ASF trio, I only sprinkle about 1/2 cup with emphasis by the water spigot and beneath the wheel where they chose to urinate the most. I only have 3 ASF tubs and 2 hamster houses. So, my 16 bucks for a 25 lb bag will last me at least 2 years the rate I'm going (1.5 cups every 1-2 weeks for the ASF and 1/2 cup a week for both the hamster houses since they are tinier). I got a huge sack of compressed aspen bedding for cheap that I also use for my snakes and my parrot. So, if you have a discount bedding source, you might come out cheaper with the sweet pdz. I guess just see what works for you and what's available closeby. If you don't have a feed store near you, you can get sweet pdz online. I'm not sure if you can get equine fresh online.
