I use both. I use a digital thermometer/hygrometer to spot check what is going on when I walk by. I use my temp gun to accurately measure temps in the tubs and cages.

I have a digi at each end of the cage to let me see the ambient temps at a glance. Use a temp gun to check floor and hide temps.

Using both is the best choice. A non-contact infrared thermometer is great for surface temps, but you can't measure ambient temps with it.

I use both. I find that an acurite isn't as accurate as a temp gun when it comes to temperature but I use them to get a general idea of the humidity.

I have 2 temp guns, 1 digital thermometer with a probe, an analog thermometer in each enclosure and a clock on the wall with a thermometer built into it. If I could only keep one of these it would be the temp gun.

    Re: Digi Therms or Guns?
Only reason I use a thermometer is because I've yet to fork over the cash for a gun. When I can get one I will.

    Re: Digi Therms or Guns?
I wanted to add something i posted on another thread here. The reason i use both. I use an acu-rite unit in each rack so i know my tstats are doing the job, i use the temp guns to take core temps of the animal's, what i mean is when an animal moves from the cool side to the warm side, or vice versa, i take note and take its core temp. I may be a little anal, but i like to know what the animals temp is, as well as the environments temperature.

I'd likely prefer a temp gun, but i have digital thermometers from my fish tanks and I'm using those for now.

    Re: Digi Therms or Guns?
I currently use digital thermometers and I would like to get a temp gun. I have a quick question, what do I look for in a temp gun? I was thinking of a laser version so I could see where the gun is reading from. Any suggestions or recommendations?

    Re: Digi Therms or Guns?
I use both. The digitals get reading in each tub that I can look over at a glance, and the gun is for pew-pew double checking as well as other things. It's also been used to check the temp of about everything else in the house. :D
