Double Rex (Patchwork) X Normal ?

So I've been thinking that if I breed my Double Rex boys (i.e. patchwork or mock hairless) to my normal girls. I'd get normals, het for rex.

But since the patchworks is a double gene does that change things? Will I get rex rats?

Anyone know?

I always just assumed that 'normal' is more dominant cause hey it's the norm.

The hammock is just 1/3 of a bath towel folded with paper clips stuck through it. So easy and is washes really well.

Thanks, these pics were actually during their 'naked' faze. They've got full body hair right now that's all curly, except for a bald spot on the top of Indiana's head, he looks like an old man. :D

I know. Once you've had rats as pets it's hard not to love them all.

DoubleRex X Normal = DOUBLEREX!!??!

apparentally my boys have some strong genes, I bred four litters and they all turned out double rex, my feeders look really scraggly. :P

I didn't think so....

Double rex x standard should be 100% rex...double rex x rex would be 50% rex 50% double rex.

Well I thought that too, I mean it makes sense. But no I've got a bunch of double-rexes in my freezer to prove that rat genes are unpredictable.

And my females were very standard, they came from Petco.

I bet you your female was a rex. Females don't hold their curl very well, and some will look straight, the only key being their whiskers are still curled a little.

No, rat gene's work exactly as they are predicted to if you know what genes you are working with.

Got a picture of your double rex and the supposed parents? My only other guess would be that you have some poor fuzzies or other recessive genes at work in both parents.

Here are the pics, but I got them very young, the girls had standard coats as long as I had them and I never noticed curly whiskers.
I didn't mention but I may have had a few reg rex in the litters too, some of them didn't start to lose hair before I froze them... I don't know. But I definitely had double rex babies, a majority of them if not all. I was sure I bred double-rex X normals but then again I got the females from petco and the males were rescues that I adopted so I don't know they're exact lineage, maybe they're triple rex :P.

One more thing, I froze the babes off at 4 weeks, right after weaning, some had started to loose hair as young as 2 weeks and some had barely started.

But you're right, who knows what kind of genes petco stock carries, or my rescues for that matter. I've always just guessed what they were.

The girls look like they could be rex. I agree with Connie in that adult female rexes really don't look rex. For instance...this is an adult female rex.

Notice very slightly curled hair, straight whiskers.

Both girls had the same thick straight hair from when I got them at petco as small 'feeders' (I estimate small petco rat's ages to be 5-6weeks of age) till when I adopted them out a year later. I really don't think my girls were rex. *shrug*
And both of them threw the same kind of babes in their litters, they we're separated so I knew who's were who's. Half black hooded, half berkshire, All with curly hair, 80% if them had started to loose hair in patches when I froze them at 4-5weeks of age.

Anyway, someone here has hidden genes. I don't care, I just thought I'd share my results since they differed from what I expected. :P I just bought a new little breeder girl at the same petco so we'll see what she produces when mated to my boys. She's my new little sweetie named her Wicker... I'll post pics when I have them.

Females look like they have straight whiskers. If your boys are supers, then maybe you just saw a bunch of rex's with different variabilities. Or, there is a hairless gene at work.

It would be cool though if I there's a true hairless gene in them. I know you recommend against having hairless in breeders but I don't have a colony where holdbacks are hard to track.

Do true hairless start out with hair? of are they hairless from birth?
If they start out with hair how do I tell them apart from the double-rex?

They do start out with some short curly hair, then as they molt, it falls out to be left behind with no hair. (that is all depending on which hairless gene your working with, since there are like 4 different recessive genes, each of which can leave more or less hair, it's all variable.)

Yep that would be the answer. I've always just guessed they we're double-rex because of their looks. But they're rescues so I don't know their actual lineage.
