Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
So, my step sister was handling my 2200g female yesterday, when all of a sudden we saw droplets of bright red blood on her stomach. I immediately took her and gave her a quick examination, and not finding any cuts on her at all, I went to put her back in her tub when 6-7 BIG drops of blood just start flowing from her mouth. So, Instead of panicking, I grabbed a tub lid, called my snake vet and told him that I was on my way with her, and went to get her examined. 3 hours later, we couldn't find anything wrong with her at all. She ate a live medium rat last saturday ( I always supervise my feedings and she was not bitten), temps are 88-90 warm side, 75-77 cool side and is hooked up to a helix thermostat, temps measured with an accurite thermometer. Humidity is almost constantly at 60%. Bedding is bottom layer newspaper, with aspen shavings on top of that, and the only other furniture is a ceramic (sealed) water bowl. She's in a rack system with my other 3 ball pythons.
Has anyone else ever heard of this happening? It's been over 24 hours since the incidence happened, and she's still bright, alert, and active. Perfectly normal if not still a bit pissy from the vet poking and prodding her yesterday.

Gee...no idea, but 75 is too cool. Need to get that closer to 82-83.

i agree, thats a little chilly.
hmm, im stumped, the feeding went well though, no problems swallowing?

Did you take her to Dr. Minson?

Re: Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
nope, no problems swallowing at all. Everything went smoothly. She snatched the rat by the face, I checked the inside of her mouth for any bites (there were none) and I had some chopsticks at the ready incase if things went wrong. I don't think that feeding was the issue, since it had been an entire 7 days since she had eaten *shrug*
Normally my cool side is around 80, but I'm cooling my cages for breeding, which is why it's 75. Everybody's eating, and my vet ok'd the temp, so Im not too worried at the moment about that. When/if they stop eating for me that will be the first thing that I'll tweak:gj:( sorry if that sounded like me being a jerk, I really don't mean for it to come out that way).
I'm bringing my girl back into the vet in a month for a fecal and follow-up exam just to make sure that there arn't any internal parasites that she may have gotten. I don't think that would be the problem though, since the only new animal that's been introduced in the house is a wallaby. Both my vet and I are still stumped though .

Hi,
At any point in the handling did she try and ram her head anywhere or have to be restrained about the head area?
I'm wondering if she managed to bite herself inside the mouth a little?
Or possibly stabbed herself inside the mouth with a little splinter of aspen or somesuch - but I would have expected the vet to spot that when he looked inside her mouth.

I grabbed her about 1/3 and 2/3 down her body to lift her out of her tub. She was literally only out of her tub for 45 seconds before my step sister told me that she was bleeding, and 10 seconds later before I put her back in the tub. I did grab ahold of her head to examine the outside of her mouth and eyes before I put her back in, but I held it with the minimum amount of restraint possible. I thought the exact same thing about the aspen too, but the vet said that there weren't any wounds in her mouth at all:confused:

sorry I've been busy with school. Nope, never found out what was wrong with my female at all. she's been eating normally, passing normal fecals and urates so i'm not sure what really happened. The vet gave her a clean bill of health though.

i have found that in past my bp have bit them selfs somehow. not quite sure how, once one of my large males was grasping my arm a little tight for my liking. went to unwrap him gentally of course, and he had blood dripping from his mouth.

Re: Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
My retic has done this before. My thoughts were that he was pushing a broken tooth out of his mouth when the blood came...this could be your situation as well.

Re: Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
My red tail did something similar once, he bit himself and i couldn't tell he was cut on his 'upper lip' and was bleeding because it was so dark. When i realized it was a simple fix but it took me a while to figure it out. Granted, he wasn't dripping blood just leaving some blood on the ground.

Re: Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
I say it bit itself I have gotten tagged by one of my adult females (2300+ grams) and once i stopped bleeding you would never be able to tell i was bit. Maybe she snagged a tooth inside her mouth and by the time you got to the vet the tiny little pin hole obviously stopped bleeding and would IMO be rather difficult to find without any bruising or major damage.

Re: Straaaaaange thing happened with my 2200g female yesterday
tongue
in humans its the fastest healing organ
I bit thru my tongue one time... not fun, but 3 days later was all good. I'm talking a tooth right thru it.
just MO:P
