deer hunting thread!
So.. who here hunts? I don't hunt myself (well, I go out, but I don't shoot; haven't gotten my darned license yet.) My husband hunts, as well as a bunch of family who is out now (shotgun opening day was yesterday.)
So! Share your hunting stories, pics, whatever. Also, who cuts up/butchers their own deer? We do, and are always eager to read tips, suggestions, etc.
I also tan hides; started last year and did "ok." I want to do it better this year.
"Hopefully..." I will post pics of kills here, as they happen. Nothing yet; hubby's scope was off this morning and he missed three does at point-blank range! He disconnected it; hopefully he has better luck this afternoon.

Re: deer hunting thread!
My whole family hunts but the only deer I ever killed was with my Ford ranger. Does that count, we did eat her?

That is the same exact thing I did - dragged my feet on taking my hunter safety course and then they were all full.
I've only recently got into hunting - my family doesn't hunt buy my boyfriend does and I've been going with him. He got a nice size doe yesterday - hit her with a 30/30 and she didn't go 20 yards before she went down. Its the first time he's taken a doe. I'm looking forward to jerky!

Re: deer hunting thread!
I used to bowhunt growing up and did so untill i joined the Marines. Its been 10 years since ive been hunting but im just now starting to get back into it.
I bought a new bow and some really crazy accessories to go with it. Archery is more complicated now and costs more then i remember. I dont think im ready this year but but the next i will give it a try. Here in Nebraska we have some really good sized whitetails. And all the corn they eat makes them taste good hehe.
I pretty much have to start hunting or my wife will kill me. I have about 1k invested in my new Bow. Here is my new bow.

Hands down smoothest bow ive ever shot.
I used to shoot an Oneida strike eagle which i still have. Its an older bow but its still accurate and fun to shoot.

All they seem to eat here is corn and apples... better than the deer my boyfriend used to get at camp that don't get either of those.

Re: deer hunting thread!
Sweet; glad to see hunters amongst us :) Hitting them with a vehicle and then eating the meat.. that is awesome :D Better than it going to waste.
I definately respect bowhunters out there.. I have never shot one of the new style bows (the one I tried was from maybe 1970, lol.)
The only find here so far, was a large- dead buck that my husband found in the creek out in the woods. It was there for awhile and very waterlogged and nasty! But he sawed off the one antler it had (a nice 4-point) regardless. lol.

Re: deer hunting thread!
I have deer hunted for many years and have shot many. In Michigan Nov 15th is opening day for gun season also. In the lower 25% of the State shotguns are allowed and in the rest of the State rifle use is allowed I went up to my family cabin in Northern Mi this weekend but did not hunt this year because the State had issued unlimited doe permits for years in that area to wipe out the herd to prevent the spread of tuberculosis from deer to beef cattle and the deer herd is temporarily decimated there.

Re: deer hunting thread!
Just got back today from camp. Will be going back out there on Wednesday night until Saturday or Sunday.
I mostly go to spend time with my stepdad and the other guys at camp. Not a big fan of venison. I've only taken 2 deer in my life. I like to sit in the blind and watch the deer, hang out at camp, and those guys are getting old and I'm one of the few that can actually drag a deer out of the woods!
We saw a couple does and little spikes and button bucks. Nothing worth taking in the opening days. My stepdad bought a digital trailcam this year so it's cool to look at the pictures of who's showing up at the bait pile. Biggest we've seen on the pics was an 8 point, but they seem to be moving at night, not much activity during shooting hours. Also, we saw a little black bear when we were getting wood for the sauna.
I was actually thinking about making this thread, but wondered if I would get flamed or judged by the anti-hunters. Glad to see some other hunters on BP.net. Good job OP!

Re: deer hunting thread!
I hunted this whole weekend. On opening day if I am not hunting there is a major problem with the force. I shot this buck this weekend. He is not my best but one of them so he is getting mounted. My office is filling up with deer heads and my wife doesn't like it! I still can't believe that I tagged him with a .300 Win Mag and he ran 60 yards and then died. People don't realize how tough they really are. This picture is for you BOA.

Re: deer hunting thread!
I used to hunt when I was younger but haven't in the past few years. Last week my dad asked why I dont go anymore. I thought to myself for a minute and realized I dont have the heart to kill anymore. The thought never bothered me before but it kinda does now. I have no problem at all with hunters its a great sport, but for me personally just cant do it. With age I have realized how lucky we are to be alive and healthy. I think it would long bother me to kill anymore. Sorry had to let that out.

Re: deer hunting thread!
Both my aunt and uncle hunt. After all their tags have been used, the neighbors who have extra or have yet to land a deer get my uncle to to so for them. They rarely ever have to buy beef. I watched my uncle choke down a filet minion once LOL. Never hunted myself, but everyone arround does, love fresh food from the land/water be it meet, seafood or veggies! Good luck hunting.

Re: deer hunting thread!
Thanks guys. I have been shooting deer since I was 12 so it has been 20 years now. I only shoot the dominant buck on my farm each year. The rest live to grow old and make more great bucks. It is weird how hunting gets into your blood. I watched this buck for over 40 minutes and he kicked 7 other bucks butt while I was watching. It was great. I told my dad I have to a recorder next time on our hunt.

I shot one with a .308 and it went from standing to laying down, all depends on where the shot lands. I have to work opening weekend but i get to hunt monday and tuesday. I hope there are enough hunters left to make the deer move around a little more.

Sounds like awesome deer-herd management :) It always upsets me when people come out here and just shoot at anything that moves. There were many bucks taken that were small guys; I wonder what potential they would have had. Granted, I hold nothing against people who get smaller bucks, but it is nice to know that someone out there shares my personal views of deer-herd management :)
Nice buck by the way!

Re: deer hunting thread!
Went out with my stepdad and sat a few more times the past couple of days. Still nothing big enough to take. So since I couldn't give you guys any pictures of big bucks I just took some of the camp. I love living in the U.P.!

You realize just how much you take modern luxuries for granted when you have to take care of business in one of these when it's 5 degrees outside!

A few of the bigger racks taken at the camp over the years.

This little baby heats the whole camp. Can't beat cast iron, stays hot all night long!

My stepdad took this black bear a few years back. Weighed in at about 450 pounds.

Coyote was taken by my stepdad. Beaver was trapped by a friend after it kept flooding the camp road by damming a little creak nearby.

I might be able to get out hunting a few more times so there's still hope of bringing home some nice buck pics. Wish us luck!

Re: deer hunting thread!
I think some of my family members have hunted before, but they don't normaly do it every year. I haven't really asked most of my family if they hunt or have hunted before but I know for sure some have.

Re: deer hunting thread!
growing up in the Upper Peninsula of michigan, Hunting was something that everyone does. Heck the high school i went to gave us all the first day of rifle season off, because going to Deer Camp was something that most of the student population did. I myself always preferred Bow hunting and Bird hunting. Never gotten a Deer myself, but didn't exactly put much effort into it. I mainly go out hunting as an excuse to get out in the woods and walk around.

Re: deer hunting thread!
I guess pesthunting with an airgun does not count...:P
Took down some nice rats over the years, also some doves (air-rats) and even a bunch of mice point blank, but the regulations over here for real hunting are really hard.
A) expensive as hell (courses cost around 3-4k € and take around 6 month, every weekend (I work every weekend))
B) I guess it would be easier to become a doctor, than a hunter (same with fishing nowadays, I am glad i got my permit back in the days). I checked out the papers and you really have to know a whole lot of stuff to get the permit.
C) Gun laws, I live in a country where the state is afraid of armed citiziens, sometimes good, mostly bad...

Re: deer hunting thread!
i think hunting in my favorite sport to be honest, its all quiet in the woods and it gives you time to think and you will never see real nature in a zoo!

Re: deer hunting thread!
I can't wait for the season to start, Freezer has no venison!! I usually have to bag a minimum of 3 to keep the freezer stocked for the year.

I've never actually killed one, but my uncle hit one with his squad car and brought it in jerky form to Thanksgiving!

Re: deer hunting thread!
My family have all been hunters since I can remember. This will be my 9 year old son's second hunting camp. He is just going to sit with me this year (as he did last year), but going to camp with the bunch of us is still exciting to him. I will have three doe tags and my buck tag this year, so I hope to fill the freezer and then some!
