Bengal Cats
Wow been watching some vids on youtube about these and they are quite interesting.
Anyone own one of them?

Re: Bengal Cats
yep, I have two
they are quite a handful! definitely require an involved owner to keep everyone happy.
say goodbye to anything breakable in your house....these are very athletic cats.
ours are almost 11 years old now...and have not slowed down one bit!
If I could, I'd get more when these pass away....they are the best cats ever. My spouse, on the other hand, is in the 'no more cats..these wore me out' camp.

Re: Bengal Cats
Cool.
Do you mind if I ask the price in which you got them at? I hear their quite expensive however I did find a few on breeder sites going for around 500-600.
That isn't too bad I guess.
Any pics? :)

Re: Bengal Cats
I am interested in them too!

Re: Bengal Cats
we got them over 10 years ago when they were much harder to come by.
We paid $500 each at that time. I guess when you figure in inflation, the current price you quoted seems pretty reasonable in today's dollars.
You should meet some bengals. Once you feel their fur you'll never want any other cat.

PICS woman! :please:
The reason Chris and I got our kitty was because of his spotted pattern, he looked exotic compared to other cats, and he sure thinks he is. :)

Re: Bengal Cats
They are awesome cats! I got one about 4 months back. My boyfriend isn't a cat person but she has converted him. We have 2 dogs and they adore her. They are very high energy cats and they need a lot of attention. I wouldn't get just one unless you already have another animal to keep it company. If mine didn't have the dogs to entertain her, she would drive me insane. When the dogs get tired of playing, she does laps around the house occasionally stopping to try to climb the walls or destroy the toilet paper.
In my area $500 is on the low end. Mine isn't registered and I paid half that...It took me over a year to find a purebred in my price range and I drove 3 hours to pick her up, but she was well worth the wait :)
Here are a couple older pictures, still in the 'fuzzy ugly' stage, her spots have come out a lot more recently:

Re: Bengal Cats
Bengals are a lot of fun......they don't act like a "normal" house cat. Here is a pic of my Bengal and Maine Coon.

Re: Bengal Cats
It's true...I often compare bengals to dogs. They are very social and interactive. Great when you're in the mood, not so cool at 3am. :8:
Ours are extremely affectionate toward people, but HATEHATEHATE each other. Getting two seemed like a good idea but in our case they hit about 2 years of age (they are brother and sister, both fixed) and the battle began and never ended.
I have an older photo gallery here:

My husband I think has a photo gallery here that is newer. I think you have to sign in or something to see it (I don't have a Flikr account so I can't see what's there)

Re: Bengal Cats
My best friend has one..purebred.. he is very very vocal! lol
She got hers for free a friend of hers bought him and for some reason had to give him up, he is so handsome. I always told her I would steal him away.... However I dont know if I could handle the constant meowing like a cat in heat. Would drive me crazy.
He really doesnt get into all that much but then again he's got dogs to play with.
Here he is

Re: Bengal Cats
wow...my male looks exactly like that boyo. Nice!
-
Re: Bengal Cats
I've been looking around at fan sites and everything, so I guess the question is, how do you know that the Bengal is purebred? Are there physical characteristics to look for, or something that's really pronounced in the bengals that is missing in domestic cats?
-
Re: Bengal Cats
I think the only way to know for sure is to know that the parents are registered. As for characteristics, the closer to wild generation-wise, the more like bengals they will act. All domestic bengals are F4 or greater (for F3 or less you need a permit) and over the years they are getting further and further away from their Asian heritage and more toward American shorthair.
So, look for registry info on the animal you want to buy if you care a lot about genetics and behavior being predictably bengal-like.

Re: Bengal Cats
My friend has two Snows! They look very similar to OneBreitGirl's pic above. Now, they are adorable cats, and very high energy. Very. They are both unneutered males and are brothers. I think that she plans on breeding them eventually..
They are.. did I say it already? VERY high-energy cats. They love to knock objects over, and are very playful and mischevious with each other and with people. Very outgoing cats too.. not afraid or intimidated by strange people at all as far as I can see. If you want playful balls of kenetic energy, then they are great.

Re: Bengal Cats
A friend of mine's neighbour died in a house accident, the family asked him to watch the cats while they settled her affairs... surprise, they never came back for them.
He has 1.1, and they are crazy cats! Had them for about a year before he realized they were not regular cats. He knew they were nutters, but did not know they were a special breed.
The female is fine, but the male is very timid, and drives them crazy. When he bolts to hide he pretty much takes out everything in his path (like a dog). If startled he can be very aggressive as well.

Re: Bengal Cats
Had two...Loved them, but they didn't get along with the kids or the dog and had some problems using the litter box (for some reason liked going in the kids beds)...Beautiful, but very high maintenance...At least our 2 were...

Re: Bengal Cats
If I were to get another cat it would definitely be a bengal or two

Re: Bengal Cats
Get a Savannah or OciCat. They're nicer and definitely not as neurotic... Bengals are nuts.
