    Before you build/purchase a rack....
Where do you have all your snakes? Do you just have tubs sitting around everywhere? I ask because I currently have one snake in a glass tank enclosure but I am planning on picking up two more snakes this weekend and putting them in tubs. I don't have the resources to build a rack and don't plan to until I'm up to 5 or so snakes, and I'm looking all over my apartment for places to put these dang things :rolleye2:
Anyways, I have some shelves that I might put the tubs on as kind of a poor man's rack for now, but I'm just curious what you guys do

Can't help with rack questions, but make sure you at least have a seperate room to house your new snakes for a quarantine.

I have mine in tubs sitting on a coffee table out of the way of traffic in my room. I would say for the good of the snake some where where they wont be bothered so much. Especially for the newbies! I need to build/buy a rack too....

    Take a look at these

I have a stack of these 14 high. Price is good and I heat them with heat cable. Heat cable can be purchased at most reptile supply place. These are really cheaper than setting up glass tanks. Good ting is you can use just one or they stack right on top of each other when your collection grows.

I never had the problem, I started off with one snake, made a rack, and then filled it up.

ditto. I had one snake in a tank. Then build a rack, and filled it. Then build another rack...and another, and another.

I've seen those at walmart, but I always wondered about how to keep the temps up on them and just how secure they are. Do you put the heat on the back? And I guess if you have 14 of them, they must be secure so that answers that question....

Here is a photo of these drawers when I had them stacked 6 or 7 high. Like I said they are now stacked 14 high and are good and sturdy. They are beside my VPCB70 for compairison.

actually I just took a closer look...are they sold individually? Then just put the heat in between them when you stack it?

Yes they are sold individually or in groups of 4. They stack securly and I use heat cable under yhe drawers for belly heat. Not a bad option for the money, it's a lot cheaper than the rack beside it!!

man, that's a great, cheap, way to keep snakes...why don't more people keep them in those? I'm going to have to invest in a few....

you never answered my question though...is it back heat or does the heat cable fit between them for belly heat?

Yes, belly heat. You will see the groves to run the cable in. Let me know how you like them.

FatBoy, could you maybe take a picture of the underside of one of thoses tubs? Maybe on cleaning day or something. It seems like they are awfully close, and I would be interested in seeing how the heat cable is run under there. It's a great idea!

Re: Before you build/purchase a rack....
Well I wasn't able to get out to the store tonight because I had a lot of work to get done, but I went online to look at heating cable and noticed a wide variety from 15 watt to 150 watt. I've never dealt with heat cable before, and I'm assuming 15 watt would be enough to get the job done, but I can't imagine what 150 watt would be used for so maybe it doesn't get as hot as I am thinking? If anything though, I'd want to get a little extra just in case and just regulate it with the thermostat, but I'd like to know how hot these things get first.

I haven't purchased the stacks yet, but I can't imagine not being able to fit flex watt in there, I'll see what I can do and might be buying some of that instead.

Re: Before you build/purchase a rack....
This was a while ago, but just an update for those interested...

I ended up not buying those stackable drawers just yet, I couldn't really find anything I liked at wal-mart and couldn't wait for the container store to ship them to me (plus they were a little too big for now), so I got two tubs instead that are sitting side by side on a little shelf:

And just because everyone likes a feeding pic:

If anyone else would like to chime in with their makeshift "racks" go ahead, I'm still kinda interested in where everyone keeps their snakes, and every other thread is about a real rack it seems..

Re: Before you build/purchase a rack....
This was what I used while I saved the money to buy a rack back in the day. I insulated the bottom of the tubs to reflect heat up since they were sitting on a metal grate shelf. It served its purpose and now those tubs are storing some old books under my bed :)

Re: Before you build/purchase a rack....
I used to do the same thing, having each individual snake in a tank. After awhile I realized how much easier it would be to build a rack, and house them in there. My first couple I built were alittle blah but they worked after awhile I did away with them. And built some racks for myself that actualy look and work good. I could not imagine keeping snakes without one ever again. As your collection grows you will defintely see what I mean. Hope all is going well for you and your snakes. Happy Holidays!:gj:
