Incubators - Post pics of yours!!!
Let's see what everyone is using for an incubator... Post up pics of yours!

I am on the lookout for an old cococola fridge if I can find one... Any ideas where I should look that might help me actually find one?

I prefer beverage coolers, because I like to see in without having to open the door.

    Chase,

How do you fill in with the grooves? Do you simply just cake the silicone in the grooves? Or do you do something different?

    Thanks!

I didn't put a window in mine either - I figure I might want to use it as a cooler someday... ;)

    It worked perfectly last season...

This is an incubator that I built and it worked very well for last year's season. I have a step by step how to on my website if anyone is interested. Also, you can take the same principals and scale them down to whatever size incubator you need.

Yep--keeps the heat steady from what I understand. Water retains heat better than air or earth, which is why it's always warmer on the coast during winter--same principle.

    Good looking bators here. :)

Mine isn't built yet, since school issues are taking precedence over BP breeding so far (Tho I may get in some late season breeding as well as some corn breeding this spring), but it shall be built from this:

    http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...Cooleropen.jpg

I already have the components (new shelves, Flexwatt, spare t-stat, Acurite), I just have to find the time to get it all together. :)

As for finding one... I got mine from an appliance repair place. Most of them will have broken coolers and such that they'll either give away free to anyone who comes down, or sell for a VERY reduced price. I got that one for $30 (+$20 to have it delivered, sometimes its bleh not having a car).

I keep tubs with rock and water(with a lil bleach). The water and rock help stabilize temps at the bottom, I also put holes in the top of my tubs for humidity too. It is very dry where I live.

You have to buy a 3rd party thermostat for NS incubators.

I would assume heat tape, you cant actually see it, the cord comes out the back and plugs into the thermostat.

Mine's just like this and I just filled in the grooves with silicone. We have a couple feet of 11" flex at the bottom controlled by a Helix. There's a light grate on top of the flex, on little feet things, and then bottles of water for the heat sink and then another light grate and then 5 egg boxes. Works well and keeps a steady 89-90F temp for a small monetary investment (the neighbor's cooler!)

You put the probe for the thermostat in the egg box instead of on top of the heat tape like on racks to get a more accurate reading. Please correct me if i am wrong. I will be building an incubator out of a mini fridge in the next year or so. Thanks for all the help

Where do you put the probe for the thermostat? Do you use a fan and if no how come? Thank you:D

You are correct heat tape is used to heat NS incubators. He will also sell the theromostat with it but of course its additional charge

Re: Incubators - Post pics of yours!!!
I made an incubator out of an igloo. 3 years in a row and is still gives me good temps and successful hatchling BPs.

I use a Zoomed Heat Cable and an Alife thermostat with one 7" computer fan.
I had a humidity and temp gauge inside as well as outside displayed. It can hold up to 6 15 qt sterilite 1754s. But I normally have one filled with water to stabalize the temps.

Once I got the temps to hit 89-90 it stayed no lower than this. It did get higher due to the temps in my room increased too much. Since the heat in the incubator can only turn off most incubators will do this if the room temps get too hot. This is because there is no cooling system in the majority of the incubators even my homemade one. But the insulation from this igloo was great. That is one reason I didn't make a window in the lid. Which may compromise the igloo's insulation unless you use dual pane.

The pics are not what it looks like now. I made it look neater. Tightened loose wires, installed a small inside light, repositioned and changed the fan and also have the probe hanging in the middle of the incubator.
