Whale Wars?
Did anyone see the premiere tonight? Pretty sweet show......I wouldn't mind doing something like that.
-
Re: Whale Wars?
I don't have cable so I missed it! :( I saw a video on it though. Looks like a really good show. Wish I could get out there and do something like that.

Re: Whale Wars?
It would be better if they had competant people, vs people with two brain cells with passports.
The friend of the capt. not holding the rope right, as they lowered the zodiac... causing 4 plus people to have to be saved from freezing to death...
An aviation "enthusiast" in charge of the helo..causing near catastrophic damage to a rotar blade...
All this BEFORE they get to save a single whale.
I will of course watch more of it, and hope that things get better.

Re: Whale Wars?
I really like the show.. But I agree about competency.. Those people that went in the water were closer to death than what was portrayed in my opinion!! Ill definately be watching to see what else they'll get themselves into..

I thought the same thing while watching the show. None of these people should be on this ship.

Re: Whale Wars?
Did anyone see the show tonight? Where they wanted crew members on the ship to create a hostage situation?
It must be easy to be the guy that comes up with the plan and then sits in the safety of his ship taunting the people who hold his crews lives in their hands. They knew their crew would be held and be at the mercy of the japanese sailors and they sat there taunting them over the radio. This is incredibly irresponible and careless with peoples lives. It is one thing to feel so strongly about something you are willing to risk your life - it is different to risk your life when you don't need to.

Re: Whale Wars?
It's an interesting show, but the captain is a moron.
-
Re: Whale Wars?
i love the show, but the captain is like a crazy person.
-
Re: Whale Wars?
Those people are stupid.
Let's see, you're in Open Ocean. You throw small explosives(bird bombs from the look of it, harmless, but still a explosive), you throw acid AT the crew, to get it on deck to damage the deck, and cause a horrible stench(btw it's harmful to breathe that), you try to foul the props of a ship at sea...
Then you have 2 members jump on board the vessel... technically you are now a Pirate, in open ocean waters, so technically the japanese crew could have shot them, and tossed the bodies overboard. Other than bad PR, they would not have been outside their rights to do so, since boarding without leave is ILLEGIL and is a act of piracy.
THEN... the idiots have the nerve to be astounded that the japanese take exception to this, and don't release the guys back with no reprecussions.
Using terms like "hostages" and "kidnapping" when the guys willingly boarded without permission is ridiculously stupid.
Understand, I like whales, all cetaceans. I studied them for a number of years. I oppose whaling. I think the japanese are wrong for their "scientific" whaling, since it's obvious it's a farce. But preforming illegil actions against a ship is gonna get consequances you won't like. Being surprised just makes you look stupid.
Putting a show on tv trying to glorify what technically is a boat full of terrorists, I just don't understand. Getting between whales and the whalers = good. Throwing acid at the crew = bad. That's assault, and if I were on board the japanese ship, I'd have done ay more than aim water cannons at them. They are lucky they haven't had any actions other than detaining two stupid pirates.
IMHO.

Re: Whale Wars?
I'm lovin it... Season finale is on right now. They explain what the acid butter is...it's completely harmless and does not explode. It stinks like hell and taints the whale meat

What do you suggest these people do? write them a letter and kindly ask them to stop whaling? :gj:
I think the point of the show is to get attention and get people talking. They've accomplished that by this very thread :gj:

Re: Whale Wars?
I think they are terriorist, different cause same thing.I love whales they are great creatures & should not be killed but thats not the way to do it,STOP BUYING WHALE PRODUCTS DON"T MAKE A MARKET FOR THEIR BODYS!
-
Re: Whale Wars?
I don't know about you, but as an average american while not vegan, I didn't buy whale products. I don't think many people do, so americans not buying whale products isn't going to stop the japanese from buying whale products. The only way those murderers are going to stop whaling, is if someone confronts them and that is what the Sea Shepard is doing. I support them, though I think they shouldn't be putting themselves in so much danger by boarding the other ships.

Re: Whale Wars?
I saw the previews and decided not to watch it. I didn't like the way they handled their cause.
Okay, okay, dialogue is probably not going to get you anywhere, but two wrongs still will not make a right. In my opinion, using the power of the media by education instead of piracy is better. I would approach it as such: Follow these guys with a camera, show to the world how whales are being hunted, then rally the people to boycott whale products.
Jay, most cosmetics - your girlfriend's lipstick, for instance - contains some form of petroleum by-product or whale fats.
That's why I really really really LOVE Steve Irwin. There was one episode where he was walking the streets of Thailand (I think) and he passed by a street vendor selling komodo dragons. The dragons were put on a leash and was in very poor condition. You don't see Steve Irwin throwing mud at the vendor. You don't even see him insulting, cursing out, or doing anything else of the kind to the vendor. He talked to the vendor (with his camera crew following him) asking him how he got the dragons, what he is doing to take of it, and what he plans to do with it... and then he turns to the camera, explains to everybody the proper way to care for a komodo dragon and then rallies the people by saying that the way to stop these vendors is not to buy from them. Then his wife goes to some facility somewhere where they sold boots, purses, fur coats, etc. etc. and does the exact same thing even showing people what to buy instead. Awesome show. I miss him A LOT. My kids watch Bindi the Jungle Girl religiously.

Re: Whale Wars?
It ticcs me off to see so many blatant lies, that even the narration of the show has to qualify what the people say.
The acid they throw is not rancid butter. It's muriatic acid(sp?). They ALSO throw rancid butter and flour. Then after they throw glass bottles of acid on the ship, they are shocked when the japanese attack back.
I do not support whaling, but I also do not support terrorists or pirates.
Frankly I think that the captain made up that whole bogus shooting thing too. No damage to the outer clothing, and no footage showing a weapon, despite sooo many cameras, no footage of the captain getting shot, despite so many cameras. Even the show editors had to point out that type of stuff.
When SeaShepard decides that no one should keep exotic snakes, they'll come wreck our property, and harass us. Then it'll be different.

Re: Whale Wars?
Well, we do not use cosmetics.
While I think their methods could use a bit of tweaking (not throwing acid or boarding the ships) their hearts are in the right place. They are passionate about something and they are trying to make change. The thing is, even with media education, most people just don't care. I mean, as long as someone can get their favorite shade of lipstick from Walmart, who cares about some whales getting killed over near Japan. The Sea Shepard knows this and knows that drastic measures are needed to make immediate change. If there was a house of children who were being abused and you knew they were being abused, you would not knock kindly on the door and ask them to stop abusing the children. You would bust down that door and save the children inside. These people are doing the same thing. They are actively saving whales while educating people by way of television.

No. You shouldn't. You would go through proper legal channels so that the children would be removed safely and the parents would be charged instead of you being charged with kidnapping and the children being returned to that home. You can't uphold the law by breaking it.
The people on the Sea Shepherd show an indifference for the safety of not only the Japanese whalers but their own crew mates as well as well as a blatant disregard for law. And for those that disregard the danger to the Japanese whalers... violence begets violence. It isn't the way.

I believe that Whaling is wrong,I believe that the Sea Shepords antics are a little over the top but They are drawing attention to the cause! In my opinion that is what needs to be done.

I totally agree but... What if the system is broken? How do you go through the proper legal channels if you have an obviously flawed system? You can't.Sometimes Drastic times call for drastic measures:O And I'm pretty sure we can all agree that what they are doing is drastic.

Re: Whale Wars?
They are only making protesters look like violent idiots, IMHO.
And if India outlaws eating cows, should they send folks over to start hurling acid at US ranchers? Remember, they are NOT in Australian, or US waters. It's all at best murky legalaties. Japan is technically within their rights to take a certain number of whales per season. They say for research, and they might do some research(probably on the levels of toxic chemicals in whale meat for consumer information) and then use all the meat and blubber as well to sell for consumption.
Is it wrong to kill whales? To most folks in the United States, yes. To the people of Japan? Mostly not. Again, it's NOT the US customs. It's the International Law that counts.
BTW< I do just LOVE how the SeaShepard people point out that the dolphins, pilot whales and humpbacks are "protected" by them being there. Truth? The whalers do not go after either dolphins or pilot whales, and have already agreed not to take any humpbacks due to low numbers. So those animals were never in danger of being harvested. There's so much lies and misinformation on the show that I think it does more harm than good.

Re: Whale Wars?
Bumping because of this thread, http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=94960
I agree with wolfy 100%. If I was the captain of the whale ship and pirates jumped aboard my ship guess what, its open seas and my ship is in danger (you can figure out the rest I hope). These tactics are the wrong way and having idiots doing the tactics makes it even worse. I agree something needs to be done but this is not the way, two wrongs do not make a right.

Re: Whale Wars?
The only reason I don't support whaling is that I believe it is unsustainable. Does anyone else feel this way?
I don't get what makes whales "special".
Then again, I very much have the hunter/predator instinct. I track, kill, cook, and eat animals.
No two ways about it though, the captain of the Sea Shepherd was a founding member of Greenpeace who was kicked out for being too extreme. Not only that, but I believe endangering the lives of their own crew, and the crew of the whaling ships is very wrong.

I wanted to see it but well I'm getting old and I forgot

I agree completely! I'm a hunter/fisher and do the same. If the animals you're hunting can't sustain the numbers to survive then, that's when they shouldn't be hunted or killed. Ither then that, I have no problems with it as long as it isn't a useless killing for fun. I use all that I can of an animal I have hunted or caught. If I have excess, then I provide to others.

Exactly. It would be better if the people on the ship had any intelligence. I love the idea and the cause. I just think that we need people who have the brains doing this stuff.
