    Snakes and cats?
Just got a new little kitten a couple weeks ago, and he's my first non-herp pet that I have in my house. Ever since I've gotten him, my whole snake room has been on edge...going into feeding mode and striking as soon as I slide open a tub. I know lots of members here have cats. Does this behavior diminish with time?

My cats don't get access to the snakes very often but I haven't noticed any such behavior when they do 'get together'.
Just be extra careful that none of your snakes can get out, cats will take advantage of that fact. I have an '08 here that managed to get out of her tub (my fault entirely), I woke up in the morning to her curled up outside my bedroom door with some nasty nasty cat bites all the way down her back. I don't know how she got to the cats but she did. I treated her and kept an eye on her, last week she shed and is mostly healed except for two larger wounds which I think will be good after the next shed. She took a mouse this last feeding day and is doing great. But what if the cats hadn't lost interest? What if she'd been smaller? What if more damage had been done? It's something I'll feel guilty about for a long time but still a danger if you have snakes and cats.

make sure you wash your hands after handling the kitten, and see if you can keep it out of the snake room.

i got both my cats after the snake and she could care less. Never any striking behavior. the cats are actually way more terrified of her.

I started scrubbing my hands really well after a particularly nasty bite from my JCP. :rolleye2:

He's no longer allowed in the snake room after I caught him fiddling with the electrical wires. Hopefully everyone will calm down and return to normal.

I have 2 strictly indoor cats who have access to the whole house along w/ 3 indoor dogs who have access to the whole house. I haven't noticed mine behaving differently at all! I hold my snakes while the animals walk by or are sitting next to me too.

I guess it could be due to the fact that most of the animals were here first and they just adjusted in the beginning during the no handling in the first few weeks time? not sure tho? but either way, i imagine they will settle down.

I don't have cats but I do have ferrets. The ferrets are kept out of the snake room because they try to open the tubs....just something to think about. I would think that if a ferret could open a tub then a cat could.

No cats, but 3 dogs. I have no problem so far. The dogs go into the snake room (my bedroom), but only when supervised. They seem to have no interest in the snakes and vice-versa.

But do wash your hands. All the snakes need is a hair trigger, and you could get bit.

I've been wondering about this.. I think I eventually want to get a cat, and if I'm still living in an apartment like the one I have now I can't exactly have a "snake room". Right now I just keep my snake's cage next to my desk.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
I only have one BP and my "snake room" is my bedroom, but I haven't had any conflicts or tensions caused by the presence of the cat. The cat is around when I have the snake out, but neither really notices the other. The only thing I would say is that the cat has rodent envy, so I make sure to lock him out of the room at feeding time. If he wants a rodent he has to kill it himself (we rent an old house and every once in a while I can hear them running in the walls).

My cat is an outside cat most of the time and when she does come into the room, the snakes show no signs of tension.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
I have 5 cats that live in my room with all of my snakes and I have never had a problem. My cats are not interested in the snakes, and I haven't seen any extra activity out of the snakes if a cat is by the cage.

I have had to give my cats medicine and mix it with wet food, the snakes do get active and kind of look around like its feeding time when that happens.

I also have 3 pet rats and sugar gliders that live in my room and I know a couple people who keep all their feeder rats in the same room as their snakes, I haven't had any problems with that and I haven't heard of my friends having problems with that either.

    Hi all, I'm new here.

I have a cat and have never experienced a behavior like that described in the first post, but I suffered a pretty nasty bite from a very tame BP male after handling the cat (and of course forgetting to properly clean my hands). My fault, and something to consider...

Regarding the cat, he completely ignores the snakes.

    Cheers

My cats lay on top of the snake cages. Especially our deaf cat Sweetpea. She loves to bask under the heat lamp, lol. I had to put towels on all the tanks to keep the hair out.

None of the snakes seem to mind. My King snake Queen is in the tank with Sweetpea and I see it put in its banches all the time.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
I have a hyper dog, and a very old but active and feisty cat. Both of them stay out of my room when I'm handling the snake. Since she's in her hide most of the time, the cat and dog are allowed in my room only when her tank is close. I use a Zilla critter cage which locks itself into place so I don't have to worry about the cat getting in. For the most part, she's never paid any attention to the snake. My dog on the other hand gets her nose into everything but that's just her nature. I keep both live and frozen rodents away from both animals to be on the safe side. It varies from animal to animal I think. If you've got a cat that shows interest in the snakes, keep it away and eventually it will learn that the snake room is off limits.

My dog is afraid of my snakes... Probably because I shoo her away everytime I have a snake out. She just associates the snakes with something that if messed with, will get her into DEEP trouble.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
We've got four cats and they are all welcome in the snake/rat room when I'm in there. They don't bother the snakes or the rats (but that's mostly because I had rats as pets and I taught the kitties that rats are my toys not theirs), and the snakes don't care about the cats. Maybe it's because the it's such a little kitten?

hahah I actually just joined this forum so that I could make THIS THREAD but i see that you've beat me to it. I have a BP whos about 10 months old and about a foot and a half long maybe 2 feet but I recently adopted my uncle's cat after he passed away. This cat is pretty old and pretty chubby and it DOESNT like to leave my side. I havent been able to play with Jake (my bp) as often since Ive gotten this cat but I was wondering what would happen if I was to play with him or have him out and if my cat confronted him. I'm just worried that he might grab the cats face and contrict around his throat. Would taking him off be an impossible task or would it be easy. Is this even likely to happen?

My cat goes into my bedroom (where I have to two reptiles) and neither of them seem bothered. The cat has like no interest in the snake but a bit more when I'm holding the CWD since he has a long tail. I keep both of their cages secure though and the cat doesn't seem to connect that he can even get the reptiles. He's never tried.
But anyway, the snake never has seemed bothered and I got the cat about... three weeks after the snake.

My BP will do everything in its power to try to sneak out of the tank whenever my cat hops on my bed and sits there staring at it. Sometimes my BP will pause for a moment, but then try to squeeze through the top of my tank (the screen) and come out.

A sick part of me wants to see what happens lol, but Im not willing to let either one of them get hurt so I wouldnt ever.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
Generally my cats and the snakes I've had for longer periods of time show no interest in each other. Accidents can still happen though. Once I was filling water dishes and while I was in the bathroom one of the kitties decided to jump in the open 4' x 2' Sumatran short tail cage and got bit in the head. I'd only had that snake for about a year and got him as an adult and he still thought cats smelled like food.

    Re: Snakes and cats?
I have one female BP and two cats in the house. Usually, the snake remains in her tank in the bedroom, and the cats stay out of the bedroom completely, so there's no confrontation. But during this past month, I had to do some cleaning in the bedroom, so for about a week, the BP lived out in the living room in her tank.

My male cat could care less, but my female cat was f r e a k i n g out.

She'd sit right in front of the tank and stare at my BP for hours, and would jump literally a foot in the air and bolt halfway across the house when anyone made the slightest noise or movement near her. My BP carried on with her usual business, though, so I guess my situation seems kind of the opposite as yours. It was really amusing, though.

We have 2 Kittens, one almost 1 yr and another that is only a cpl weeks. when I got my female BP we only had the older kitten. Dunno if that has anything to do with it. Being the cats have full access and the scent has been around longer than I've had my BP. The cats seem more Interested in the snake than the other way around. Altho if my snake should happen to escape, I dont think it would be a happy ending.

Altho I can say, that one day i was holding my BP near one of the cats, and they sniffed eachother, with no worries. But, the cat yawned and the snake struck the air facing away from the cat.

We also have Fish and a Guinea pig, and so far all is well.
